Hi all,

I'm just about to buy a USB memory stick for work purposes, but before I just buy a standard normal one I have a question.

Have any of you seen such a memory stick but with a slot for a xD card (or other) to allow you to put your camera card in the memory stick and it automatically copies the whole contents across?

I know there are standalone external hard drive units that can do this, but has anyone ever seen it being used with a memory stick?

It would be handy to have the stick for both work stuff and whilst out with my cam to copy the contents of my xD card without needing to take the laptop with me.

Unfortunatley I think you may have gotten confused with all the funky gadget talk. There is currently no device that is an itty bitty USB device that will download photos to the device. The fuji USB xd card adapter will allow a computer to directly read the card but the only memory is from the card.

Like you mentioned hard drive based devices are the most widley available storage options out there. portable CD burners that read cards are an option but alas none directly read our xd card (that I know of - and yes yes there are CF adapters so us xd lovers can use them)

the only other option I know of is the iriver HP300 (i think that is what it is) that will connect via the USB cord and directly download the cards contents like your computer would but this is still a HD based device.

We have recently gotten the latest x-drive for our africa trip that does take xd cards directly (despite what the website says) and is fairly cheap ($300 australian which would be way cheaper anywhere else in the big wide world)

so either take less pictures (never going to happen with the beautiful final five mode) or get a portable storage device

Hi Dave

I have been using the Fuji DPC-UD1 xD USB Reader device for over a year now with great results.

I just insert the xD card from the camera into the device and it downloads the contents to the computer without any problem.

In addition, I can keep a spare xD in the DPC-UD1 and use it to download documents or images from the computer.
Great device and so compact.

Interesting.

I take it you mean the Vosonic X's Drive Pro VP-300?

Do you need an xD to CF adapter to get that to read the xD cards?

Hi John,

Thanks for your help, it's almost what I'm looking for, but I still need the help of a PC!

I'd hope to be able to connect the card to the USB drive, the drive copies the lot over to itself, then I can clear the xD card memory and take more shots.

Looks like my cunning plan of only buying one extra type of memory has been foiled! I'll have to buy an extra xD card sometime and a USB drive.

Thanks everyone.
