Just ordered E-10 w/out LiPo today. yay! however, i couldn't afford to get LiPo at once.

I have sorted through some posts on different forums and websites, and came up with following options. i would love to hear others experience w followings.

1. Dave Weikel's 6.5v, 8000 mAh ( http://www.davidweikel.com/E10_samples/power/power.shtml )

2. Bart Balwin's 7.2v, 3000 mAh ( http://www.davidweikel.com/E10_samples/power2/power2.shtml )

3. Maha PowerBank NiMH 6v, 1800 mAh

4. Maha PowerBank Li-ion 7.2 v, 1400 mAh

5. Mizco DPS-8000 PowerPack 6v, 2700 mAh

6. Unity Digital Pro PowerPack 6v, 2700 mAh

thanks in advance.

I can tell you that my Battery Pack set-up has changed my Digital Photography experiance. I no longer worry AT ALL about power. I know that with my set-up and 1 extra $35.00 7.2v battery.... I don't have to worry about how much charge I have left... and I never think about making sure that "THE" battery is charged the night before anything important might happen... If my battery goes on me, I just plug in the second one and keep on keepin' on..!!!
There.. you got it streight from the horses mouth, so to speak.... (neigh...!)

Hi FL,

I have the MAHA Lithium battery pack and still use it. It works great--always has. I just received the B-30LPS Set today, so I am using the MAHA pack as a back-up. I'll be reviewing the LiPo grip shortly and posting comments on the MAHA Lithium battery pack (as soon as my website goes back online!).

I have the unitiy digital pack. The first one I received was a dud, but was promply replaced. The second one seems to work fine. I'm up to about 300 exposures with it (I use the LCD display) and it's still going strong. It takes 15 hrs to charge and the camera will not go into sleep mode with it plugged in. Anyone know if this is normal? Other than that, it's working great. I paid $69.00 on e-bay.

Troy

Hi Troy,

15hrs to charge?
Holy Muchacho.

As to the no-sleep mode when it's plugged in, this is normal. Of course, I don't have that particular battery pack, but this happens when you have an external power source that has a high capacity / long-length battery attached to the DC source. I think the sleep mode is only applicable to internal circuitry, meaning, anything attached to the DC 6.5V input jack, will not have the sleep function enabled. I'm not sure why Olympus only made an internal sleep-mode function, and not for external devices as well. One of those things, I guess.

I have the MAHA Lithium pack. I used it for E-10 day, then over the rest of the weekend, then till Wednesday of this week, when I forgot to turn the camera off for 3 1/2 hours. (As someone else pointed out, if you have an external pack on, sleep mode doesn't work). It gave me one picture and quit. For ca. $60.00, it's a good deal. It charges up in and hour and a half or less from dead flat.

If you're thinking about a microdrive, a good battery pack is essential.

I use the battery pack that David Weikel showed us how to make. It is #2 on your list. It works very well. I also have an older Thomas battery pack that also works but has shorter life. These coupled with a few MiMH double A sets, a couple of CR-V3s and I do not worry about any photo outing.

No 4 gets my vote.

Nearly as much power on my system as from the Li-Poly (but I suspect that I have a faulty battery in it).

The Maha Li-Ion - so far very reliable and long shelf life, short charge and in the car charger included in the price = highly recommended.

Yes I have two of these, the worst money I ever spent. They go flat in the pocket, significantly so that after a few days even you plug in the excepted fully charged pack and it is flat. And at best delivered about 2 hours to my CP990.

The Li-Ions are the only job for backup ad they keep charge for months.

Hi guys,

I had toyed around with adpating a Li-ion pack from one of my camcorders that would with a little bit of juggling fit inside the existing battery compartment. I've now gone of the idea and decided to try the highly rated industrial grade Sanyo AA's.

I would buy a battery pack but I really can't stand wires looping around all over the place just asking to get pulled out, hence the original idea of the internal pack.

I'm hoping the Sanyos are as good as they are portrayed; In the last 2 weeks I have bought four sets of NiMh AA's and only the GP brand delivered reasonable performance.

Colin

We have certainly come a long way from the original Edison cells. I agree with Colin that the extra wires and weight are a negative factor. On the other hand you want to use the LCD screen and a bunch of flash, you need to boost the power input.

Maybe if they could get that cold fusion stuff ironed out.......

To a certain degree I agree with you about the wires getting pulled out... It took me all of about 5 minutes of use with my external pack plugged into the DC port to realize that I wanted something different. That is wen I descided to wire direstly into the battery holder... like this....

Since I use a coiled cord it relly isn't that long and when using a cell phone case to hold it on my belt, the cord is really not an issue.

Bart, What are the items your are using to connect the wires to? Are you using AA size batteries in addition to the externals or did you come up with something that matches their size to match up with the battery contacts inside the camera.

Another thought, when you route the power in this manner, does the camera go into sleep mode?

Jim,

I used 1/2" wooden dowels... cut to the same length as an AA cell. You can find the description of how I constructed this at....

This is a page on David Weikel's website about the Homemade Batterypack.

I built a modification of the 7.2 volt NiMH 2200mAh battery pack. I have used it in the external jack and leave the internal batteries out of the camera. I put the pack in a pocket and it reduces the weight of the camera you're holding in your hand when you are shooting for a long period of time. Yes you do have to deal with a dangling cord. It's harder to just set the camea down and walk away. However the battery pack set up cost me around $40. Took 30 minutes to put together and will last for 500 or 600 pictures using the LCD for a big part of the time. Radio shack was selling these batteries for $19 because they are replacing them with a larger battery.
Enjoy you camera

There is also the Quantum compact battery pack.

I got it for $140 at B&H Photo in NY plus $30 or so for a connecting cord. I've figured that by the time I'd get the DIY material & and invest time constructing it (which I'd rather spend taking pics) it was cheaper to get a prefab item. But then again, I'm not so good at DIY...

The quantum charges in 4 hours and also can be attached to the E10 via a tripod screw.

Adds 12 oz to the total weight. :(

Thanks Jason, I figured the no sleep mode was a result of the cord, but it's nice to have it confirmed. I wish I would have read this whole thread before I bought the unity pack--I had no ideal so much was available. The charge time really hasn't been a problem for me as I don't shoot more than 300 pics in a day or a week for that matter!
