Just made a really neat discovery:

I followed up the previous thread here about the ATP 1GB SD cards on offer at MyDigitaldiscount for $109.99 and bought 10 of them:

http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/s.nl/c.ACCT139057/category.356/it.A/id.538/.f

They arrived within 2 days of phoning my order from here in the UK, on the same day that the SD to CF adaptor I ordered here in the UK:

http://www.acecameras.co.uk/asp/web/product/9558/ph/related/product.asp

Or if you're in the usa, then:

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=113845&_LOC=US

I put them together this evening and can report that despite it saying in the instructions that the adaptor will only work with SD up to 512MB, it ALSO works with ATP's 1GB SD!!

Regardless of where the SD is: in the SD slot or the CF slot in the adaptor, at my RAW setting the LCD says 92 shots are available and I filled the SD with images in the adaptor to prove it works.

So now we can all have TWO 1GB SDs in our 1DMKiis at the same time!

All we need now is for Canon to add the little extra feature that automatically swaps to fill the second card when the first one fills up.

This adaptor is actually made by Panasonic and re-badged by Minolta.

I found this old link from Minolta:

http://www.minoltausa.com/eprise/main/MinoltaUSA/MUSAContent/CPG/CPG_Attachments/Installation_Dim7_firmware

Here Minolta says they dodn't make adaptors and instead run tests using the SD-CF Adaptor part number BN-CSDABP3 made by Panasonic that looks uncannily like the one that Minolta now sells...

After great difficulty I also eventually found a stockist of the original Panasonic labelled adaptor but the Minolta one was cheaper!

It's been out a while and at its launch Minolta claimed a 30% increase over the then relatively slow speed of CF:

http://www.imaging-resource.com/NEWS/1052753685.html

I have no idea if the speed advantage of ATP's 60x SD will be preserved but you've got to admit it's a really neat way of utilising both 1DMKii slots with SD.

I also found this alternative advertised in Australia...

http://www.mittoni.com.au/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/1183

...but I have no idea who makes it. It says it supports speeds up to 8MB/S so this may also apply to the Panasonic / Minolta adaptor.

I received this adapter last week. The casing is separating from the adapter and my computer cannot read the card. I have just emailed them for a refund and return shipping. Also, the DC card sticks out too far from the adapter prohibiting the mem card door from closing, no good for use in the camera.

Linda,

I just got one of the SD-> CF card Adapters from PNY. I ordered it from thier website, and it was the best price I could find for these.

The PNY adapter allows the SD to slide all the way in and can be used in camrea. I also tesed it with my Gmini 220 portable hard drive and it seems to work just fine.

I would think the Minolta would work the same, but I don't own one so I can't say for sure.

I went to PNY.com and couldn't find the adapter. Can you locate the URL for me? I'm going to need this adapter for an upcoming trip.

Thanks,
Linda

So unless they go bust and start selling off their patent portfolio (a very real possibility IMHO), you won't be seeing it in and Canon DSLRs anytime soon. In fact even if Canon picked up the patent, they have a (crappy) policy of not adding new features via firmware updates, so it's unlikely they'd add it.

Eh?

You are telling me that Kodak has effectively patented disk-spanning?

So Winzip pays Kodak a fat royalty? I find this hard to believe.

How is disk-spanning on SDs or CFs floppies any different to disk-spanning on CDs and DVDs etc?

It's just a file operation, not image manipulation.

Can you give me a link to a description of this patent?

Would be the speed of the SD card in the CF slot, the same as the
SDcard in the SD slot?
Sorry, been away for a couple of days - I didn't see any responses to my original thread in the first day so assumed it was of little interest.

I have no idea about speed, I was hoping my post would prompt someone (like Phil, whose CF / SD database seems to have been forgotten) into running some comparative tests.

I am guessing SD in the CF slot using the adaptor wiill be a little faster than CF, but probably a bit slower than SD in the SD slot but I do not know the limitations or specifications of the CF / SD controller electronics and therefore can only say it seems to work ok in my camera.

And yes, I goofed with the Oz adaptor - only after I posted the URL did I realise it was too long to fit in a camera.

The Minolta / Panasonic one I have DOES fit completely inside my 1DMKii.

Interesting...I followed the link to Darrell's alternative PNY P-CFSD-SD016-RF that I had not seen before and compared it to the Minolta one I'm holding in my hand - they are PHYSICALLY IDENTICAL - every notch and every angle is the same.

I would bet that Panasonic also makes this one.

Mine says 'Made in Japan' on the back.

Thanks for this, this is very cool - I'll have to grab one - but I find it interesting that they say they don't make it - when you can buy them on Amazon, and its also in the A2's system map:

Maybe the Dimage 7 stuff is older and they haven't updated?? Dunno -

Anyway cheers for the heads up - now it's off to buy some Ridata SD cards... ho hum :)

Cheers,
Nathan

Don't get me started on the ridiculous patents that get approved. "Amazon one-click": enough said.

If you want to find out more, do a search on RobG's forum. If my memory serves me correctly, that's where the guy from Canon USA posted that they cannot implement that feature as much as they'd like to, because of Kodak's patent. Alternatively, check out the reviews: Kodak has this feature, and no-one else does.

Yup it works fine. I threw my 1GB SD card in my reader and it worked fine. Doesn't work in the camera though because it's too long. But works great with my Portable Storage Device.
