Z3 defects, Report from Tokyo

Anonymous user's post in 2ch BBS (Japanese) says KM is calling
back Z3 from shops.

Information is unconfirmed, of course.
Maybe for FW reinstall and better product quality control.
I had firmware 1.00e and now i have 1.01e and it works much better. But a new uppgrade frome KM sounds very nice.

In last several days, two Japanese reviews on Z3 were out. As some of you may know Nikkei is one of Japanese major business newspapesr, and Nikkei-Net and Nikkei-BP are its internet branches.

Nikkei-Net's review mentioned Z3 defects such as banding, freeze, clock delay. KM commented that...

"These phenomena are happening on not all of Z3, but part of them."

"We are investigating and analyzing on causes of these phenomena, and we will have press release asap if measures are necessary."

To my knowledge, this is the first offcial comments from KM on defects.

Also, the review pointed out another kind of bandings. Photos below shows "tilted" bandings.

KM commented that they are not sure about causes, but maybe affected by strong electromagnetic wave emitted from near-by radio equipments or broadcasting tower.

Z3's small body is maybe too small to hold each circuit, and weak against internal/external radiation and interference.

Those are serious stripes and NOTHING like the horisontal lines described here earlier.

Good thing my Z3 is flawless. :)

Several users reported that they were told a new firmware will be
out in this weekend. Current fw version is 1.01j/e/u. New version
will be available for download from KM site on 9/21.

Information source is a Japanese forum in http://www.kakaku.com .
If the date holds (9/21) it would make a nice gift for my birthday!

Can't take photos because i'm keeping my fingers crossed!
:-))

A consumer reported that his newly replaced Z3 today have firmware 1.02.

Looks like newly shipped Z3 has firmware 1.02 in Japan.
Should be available for download from KM site later.
I am not sure whether they have hardware enchancements/modifications also.

Seriously... Check out the picture of the motorcycle in your gallery. If the original picture have the same problem with diagonal lines your Z3 is definitively not flawless...

I'm planning to purchase one in the next month or so. How do I check the firmware rev. level of what the stores have in stock?

I don't know what you are talking about. Please assist me.
I have six motorcycles I think... still looking.

Most were shot before the the 1.01e update if that helps.

and the complaints about horisontal lines is still as nonexistant.

Check out the picture of the motorcycle in your gallery. It has
diagonal lines all over the place. Isn't that a serious fault? I
would have returned the camera immediately...
Ah... the original picture in the sample gallery. :)
Those pictures were from before I installed the 1.01e update.

I thought you were looking at the webbified versions.

As you can see, the diagonal lines on the finished webbified version is not a problem.

My guess is that KM will replace all Z3 in stores with new fw version within this month. But if you want to be sure when purchase, just ask the shop clerk. Sometimes, they are informed of product informations from manufactures, especially if they belong to major chain stores, ex. Yodobashi Camera, Kitamura Camera etc. in Japan. If you are using internet shops, it depends on your luck...

Personally I would wait before buying this camera. There are too many people reporting far too many defects to indicate any kind of peace of mind vis product reliability.

I bought mine a few days after it first came out in Japan, the first one went back because it had some awful defects - having used the second one for a while I would take that back too but its too late now.

Im waiting in this new firmware and a reply to my concerns from KM Support before I send it back to the factory for servicing.

This kind of cruddy quality control doesnt give me a perception of a manufacturer whose products I want anything more to do with even if I get my individual camera working properly.

I wont be buying KM again and I wouldnt recommend anyone else to.
