I have not been shooting with the 5700 for some time, took it out for a walk in the park.

Here's one of the shots which I thought of using for next Easter. What do you guys think?

Nice work. I can see this as the center of a book cover (real or PSed) framed in leather with a series of photos following, revealing the wonders that lie further down the path.

It does not do to leave a live dragon out of your calculations, if you live near him.

Gallery under construction, advice welcome:

Hey Mike,

Thanks, great suggestion. Think I'll try to PS it on a leather background and use it for a portfolio which I'm intending to start.

No need to apologize - sometimes I regret pushing the post button (was a rather bad joke)!

--I like it very much. How did you get the oval shape?

I also think it's interesting that you take your 5700 out for a walk... as if it were a pet, or something. But I do understand.

Hi Gaber,

Glad you like the photo. The oval shape was done with the elliptical tool of PhotoShop. The bulge was done with Filter > Spherize, then cut out outside of the oval.

Sure sounds like taking a pet out for a walk, doesn't it. Fact is, although I shoot mostly with the D70 now. I still like the 5700 very much, light and handy with a very good range and sharp zoom lens.

In addition to that, I still keep a Minolta S304 P&S. I use this as a night walk around camera when I travel, don't want to carry around the D70 in a foreign country at night. 'Cos I don't wish to attract too much attention walking around at night in a strange land.

Thanks for the tip on ovalizing. I'm going to give that a try myself.

I don't blame you for being cautious with these little babies. You never know what will happen.

Give it a shot Gaber, it's quite amazing what PS can do to a photo. Post your results for all to see.

Okay T Rex, I tried it with the Greens Ledge Lighthouse. I didn't use the spherical tool because I liked it like this.

Now you have to tell me how to change the backround color.

Hey Gaber,

Nice picture of the Lighthouse, like it.

You did use the elliptical tool to mark out the oval shape for the lighthouse, didn't you? If you did, you would have seen the area selected (marked by marching dotted lines).

To change the background color, go to menu bar "Select" click on "Inverse" and you will see 2 sets of marching dotted lines. One around the oval picture, the other the outer frame of the whole picture.

From the color menu on the right of PS, choose the background color you want. Then go to menu bar "Edit" click on "Cut". The outer border of the oval shape will be changed to the background color you selected. Then go to "Layer" and "Flatten Image", you would now be able to save it as .jpg else without flattening it would save as a .psd.

I hope the above is clear, I'm bad at giving directions/instructions. Try it and let me know. There're lots of PS gurus here, mayber you would like to check out the Retouching Forum, I've learnt a lot from the very friendly people here.

Gaber,

Checked out your gallery at pbase, some very nice photos there. Liked the panos of Bear Mountain, Sunrise at Ogunquit is good too.

You have a photo Phil Bob in your Family and Friends gallery. How did you achieve that effect, quite similar to what you're trying to do with the elliptical tool.

Well T Rex, you are an excellent teacher. You taught me well. Here is a quick backround in blue. I don't like it but will play around with it later. At least I understand it now. PS is powerful and a lot to learn. Just need time and people like you in the forum. Thanks for helping.

--As for PhilBob...It was a few years ago, but probably with a TC-E2 (2X) adapter at wide angle. It's not really supposed to be used like that, but so what. So no PS.

Thanks again.

Gaber,

So the effect you got for PhilBob is actually vignetting. Ya so what, such effects are acceptable and give a different view of a picture. It's what you see in it that matters.

Glad that you're enjoying yourself with post processing and creating effects. Using gradient can create a different effect for your Lighthouse picture. Experiment. There's so much you can do with PS, enjoy.

Don't hesitate to post your queries, there are lots of helpful people ever willing to help.
