Well I have been suffering from a pretty nasty head cold the past couple of days and the last thing I wanted to do was go out and search for bugs to shoot and having to bend my head down (sinus pressure arg....) to get the shot. So I did the next best things. I brought the bugs to me. Well in this case one bug to me.

What I did was coat a couple of twigs in the backyard with a bit of honey and waited to see who would come by for a snack. After a few minutes a yellow-jacket stopped by for a bit of lunch. Here are a few of the shots I got off.

Settings: 300D, Sigma 105mm f2.8ex macro lens, canon speedlight 420ex flash with lumiquest softbox. Shot in manual mode, hand-held in Raw. Converted to jpeg using C1LE.

Thanks,
Questions:

-The flash is on the camera shoe.

-I really like the LQ softbox. I find it helps reduce the impact flash shadows can have on photos.

Most of the shots were at 1:1 macro setting so I was about 5 to 7 inches from the subject. In post-processing the shots were cropped to about 70 to 80% of original composition in order to improve what I felt was a better picture.
The one thing I wanted to know...is missing. What was the focusing
distance? How far were you away, and did you crop in post
processing?

Great shots....

Firstly - Awesome shots!

I noticed on the EXIF data the white balance is set to Flourescent(4). Did you manually set this for some tricky reason (or was it chosen by the camera)?

Thanks,
Craig.

These are incredibly sharp shots! What aperture did you use?

I love the second picture. How did you get the background black if you're outside?

Not sure why it says flourescent as I believe I had the WB set to flash and then for the last few shots I had it set to auto.

Using manual mode I used the flash as the main light. With a fast enough shutter speed, the shutter is not open long enough in order to use ambient light. Therefore the background becomes black.

Hope this explains it.

Gawd or would that be Macro God ;-), you only have 5 more mm than I do but I can't get that close. Are those full frame?
Truly fantastic!!!

but rather, to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting ...
