Carl,

Thanks for your help, I just recieved a great 13x19 print in BW of one of the best Rodeo images I took about 3 weeks ago! Thanks again and to everyone who helped me get this wonderful program to work for me and thatks to Roy for his hard work on the Quadtonerip, and the Quadtonerip graphical interface crew, I'll be sending my $50 to pay for his hard work!!

Just printed one of my black and white photos using Quadtone and the QuadtoneGUI through a Epson 2200 printer onto Ilford Smooth Gloss and Pearl and the results were fantastic ... compared to all the other methods I had tried ... Grey Balancer etc ...

At last I am now happy to do B/W through the 2200....

I'm very HAPPY to report that I have, at last, found a solution to
printing BW images on Epson printers, which produces perfectly
neutral, metamerism free prints. The answer is QuadTone RIP, which
is now available even for Windows (formerly only Mac/Linux) !

I know that for some of you this is not anything new - QTR has been
here quite a while but the Windows version has been announced only
recently. So all those people who were so frustrated when printing
BW with no good results (just as I was) and who were considering
spending some $500 on ImagePrint RIP can now try this amazing piece
of software that is almost for free ($50 shareware fee). What's
more, this RIP supports even such printers as Epson 4000 (so far
not the Windows version - but this should be solved soon) and here
the savings compared to ImagePrint can be very high !

Nothing against ImagePrint, it is certainly a wonderful
professional software with many features but I personally wasn't so
excited about it when I was trying the demo version - it very
difficult to setupit, it was buggy (the program crashed many
times), and most importantly the BW prints very FAR from neutral
(they were metamerism free but very very cold - maybe I did
something wrong but I doubt).

I sugesst this: if you print color then have a custom profile made
and stay with the Epson driver, and if you print BW, QTR is more
then enough (BTW. it also works with other inksets - like MIS
Ultratone etc).

The Windows verison is still a beta - you cannot print directly
from Photoshop but someone made a very nice GUI program:

Hi

can I ask a question ? Which of the profiles did you use for the Ilford papers and in what proportion, also which type of black ink (matte or photo) ? I've only printed on the Epson Enhanced Matte paper so far (with great results) but haven't tried any other papers. Thanks

I'm using the ilford profiles for the 2100/2200 found on the UK Website ... don't have the URL handy but a google search should find them if no one else here knows ... and using the Photo Black ink cartridge with excelent results on both Smooth Gloss and Pearl ...

The Ultrachrome inks produce quite a bit of bronzing and gloss differential on RC papers that is particulalry noticeable in B&W prints. You can eliminate some of this by spraying with PremierArt PrintShield after the prints are dry, but not all of it.. You should use the Photo black ink with any of the RC papers, including Ilford Smooth Pearl. I think that the only RC paper profiles that Roy included were for Oriental Graphica Fiber Base (OFB), but they should work OK with Ilford Smooth Pearl also. Try warm:cool profile ratios of 50:50 to 30:70 for neutral tones. There probably will be more RC paper profiles included in the next QTR release.

I should probably have also stated in my last email I was using Roy's OFB profile with the Ilford Smooth papaer ... As Carl pointed out nothing specific for Ilford papaer yet ... I found little bronzing using quadtone as opposed to "normal" printing through the Epson driver ... more than happy with the result after months of trying to find acceptable b/w results from the 2100/2200

Thanks to Carl, I now know which paper the OFB profiles are for, and EEM, for Epson Ehanced Matte, wasn't too hard to figure out. But what paper are the PFA profiles for?

And...as I do quite a bit of my printing on Epson Velvet Fine Art...can anyone suggest a profile and mix combination they've found that they like?

Thanks,

-Taz

First prints with this program were fantastic with no green in the grays.

However, the install .bat files did not properly install correctly in my computer. I had to read the bats and decipher what was to be transferred where. Once I did that it worked perfectly.
I can go back to printing some B&W files I had given up on.

Best regards,

Ed

Hi
I don't think it will ever work under Win98. On the QTR pages the author says:

"It has been tested primarily on XP Pro but it should be usable on XP Home
and Windows 2000 as well"

so my suggestion is: upgrade to Windows XP and enjoy making true BW prints:-)
I have tried it on win 98 and did not get it to work.
Any suggestions

I couldn't agree more, finally great BW prints on the 2100/2200 with Archival Matte paper. Only problem, I haven't found a way to print borderless. Did anyone manage?

Only problem, I haven't found a way to print borderless.

I don't believe that borderless is possible, for the 2200 the default margin is 1/8", however for 13x19 I had to size the image to 12.5x18.5 in order to get it to print properly. Seems a cheap price to pay for the excellent results you get.

Has anyone tried this in PaintShop Pro (either 8 or 9--yeah, I know, but that's what I have)? I couldn't figure out how to deal with the scripts. The instructions deal with Photoshop, and I couldn't translate into PSP9 (I'm new to it all, so please be gentle). Thanks for your help.
