Scott;
I have owned a nikon 990 for a year now. I bought it just because i wanted a really good camera. Now I have the "bug", and am really into the whole digital photography thing. The camera is only half of the story. Photoshop or Paintshop are programs you NEED to have to make the camera complete. The "Digital Darkroom" (i.e. software) is what makes digital photography so exciting.
The olympus and nikons are good bets. The 880 is basically the same as the 990. there are some incredibly good deals on the old 950's too. Go for a good deal.
Most importantly, if you think you will get highly interested in digital photography, remember that accessories will add up quickly to the price of the camera - $600 to $800 or more. Remember, you need computer software for your "darkroom', a photo printer, rechargeable batteries and a charger, filters, and a larger flashcard for storage. These add $$$ quickly!
Also, know you are in the best place on the net for information. Read this forum extensively before buying. I read this forum for 6 months before buying the nikon 990 in may of 2000.
Do your research! Buy from reputable dealers (ask here on this forum first).
Most importantly, Have Fun!

I'm in the market for my first digital camera. I am seriously
considering the Coolpix 880. I am only a beginner and I am
wondering if this is overkill. Are there any other models out
there that I should consider? Thanks in advance for any help.
