I'm in the market for my first digital camera. I am seriously considering the Coolpix 880. I am only a beginner and I am wondering if this is overkill. Are there any other models out there that I should consider? Thanks in advance for any help.--Scott

Scott,

I'm pretty much a beginner also, and I chose the 880. I got it back in November, and I love it. It's really gotten me interested in photography. Digital photography is a lot of fun -- you can take as many pictures as you want, with storage space (CF cards, hard disk, CD's, etc.) being your only real constraint.

The 880 has some nice features for a beginner. I mostly use auto mode right now, and I get some great shots. The scene modes are also nice for beginners. However, it also has enough manual controls as you advance along with the camera. The price has also dropped considerably on this camera since I bought it, and I thought it was a pretty good deal when I got it based on the features. It also will accept any of the teleconverter lenses that can be used on the 990.

Good luck with whatever you decide on. There's a lot of great cameras available right now (or soon to be available), and I think you'd be pretty happy with just about any of them.

Regards,

Robert

Get the 990. The swivel is great and the camera will grow with you. Put it in auto mode and it's a point and shoot. The learning curve in digital is much quicker! I've taken 16000 pictures since I got my cp990 1 year ago.
I too was a novice.

Scott GOOD CAMERA

Scott;

I have owned a nikon 990 for a year now. I bought it just because i wanted a really good camera. Now I have the "bug", and am really into the whole digital photography thing. The camera is only half of the story. Photoshop or Paintshop are programs you NEED to have to make the camera complete. The "Digital Darkroom" (i.e. software) is what makes digital photography so exciting.

The olympus and nikons are good bets. The 880 is basically the same as the 990. there are some incredibly good deals on the old 950's too. Go for a good deal.

Most importantly, if you think you will get highly interested in digital photography, remember that accessories will add up quickly to the price of the camera - $600 to $800 or more. Remember, you need computer software for your "darkroom', a photo printer, rechargeable batteries and a charger, filters, and a larger flashcard for storage. These add $$$ quickly!

Also, know you are in the best place on the net for information. Read this forum extensively before buying. I read this forum for 6 months before buying the nikon 990 in may of 2000.

Do your research! Buy from reputable dealers (ask here on this forum first).

Most importantly, Have Fun!
