flawless g1

I have had my G1 since December, it has been perfect so far, and I use the camera alot. I also have a 1gig microdrive that has been trouble free so far too. I love my G1.
Other then that G1 is perfect. I use IBM micro drive and took over
2000 pictures with it - never had a problem, and I used 340 MB
(older version) and 512 MB (newer version)

Also, chromatic abbreviation and blue cast is obvious, but that is
the problem of all digital cameras in this price range.

I am anxious to know how many of us own a perfect g1. I am always
reading about problems with the g1, hot pixels, failed firmware
updates, etc. Since I have bought my g1 it has been perfect. I
just charge the battery and no problems. I bet I am not alone.

I have shot over 6,000 images without any problems with the G1. However, I've given up using the zoombrowser for now. The library became currupted 3+ times too many and I'm currently searching for a stable replacement.

Back to the G1... I have a EX420 and lensmate with a UV. The MD works just fine. I noticed that if I change the file names while the MD is loaded into a PCMCIA adaptor... the images are no longer viewable in the G1. I changed file names to reflect the nature of each image. This helps me manage the images without havng to open the files. So now I've resorted to saving all the files as they are out of the G1. Then I go back and rename them to be resaved with a new informative file name.

Oh well, the G1 has been great. It has gone with me to Paris, Hong Knog, Montreal, Boston and numerous business parties. We just had out 1st child born on March 18th and this has become my primary subject since.

Adios y'all!

TG

In my case I've had several trips where I KNOW how many images were shot. Beyond that, the G1 organizes the shots into folders of about 100 images. I say "about" because and videos shot will reduce the total of each folder just a fraction. In my case I've shot the following:

Paris....................800+
Hong Kong.......... 600+
Montreal/Boston... 600+
CES.................... 500+
New Daughter.....1000+
Business .............3000++

Needless to say... but I have a reputation for being just plain "trigger happy" with my G1. It's kind of funny to estimate how many shots I average per hour on vacation. By the same token it's kind of nice to also estimate how much it would have cost me to produce a comparable number of film based pictures. At $10 (film and processing) per 10 good shots (I used to get 10 good shots out of 24)... that's like SAVING $6000+!!! Kind of wacky but... also very satisfying in justifying the equipment cost!

Regards,

TG

I I have a
-G1, 512Mb Microdrove

-420EX, Off Camera Shoe Cord 2, Sto-Fen Diffuser, Lumiquest Pro-max System, a Vivitar 5000 auto (non-TTL) ring Flash with Safe Sync, a couple of flash brackets
-Lensmate, Canon Wide Angle converter, Oly B-300 teleconverter

-A bunch of 49mm filters including the Hoya R72 IR filter, and a close-up filter set.
-tripods, monopod, and micro-pod.
and a moderately well stocked computer darkroom using an Epson 1270 for prints.

With this kit, I have shot over 4500 pictures since the end of January, including serving me when as I was Best Man and Official Photographer at my best friend's wedding recently (G1 for times up to the ceremoony and after the posed pictures. Ceremony and Posed photos on 35mm).

Sometimes the autofocus robs me of a shot; sometimes the shutter doesn't take the picture timely enough for that "decisive moment"; but, generally, the G1 has allowed me to shoot whenever I want- in almost any situation. As such, it has been one of the single most enjoyable purchases I have ever made.

That smile I am sporting took a fun, and able, camera like the G1 to appear. But my smile is the real benefit of digtal photography.

Mine is perfect as far as I can tell. Thousands of shots. I take it to 11,000 feet snowboarding, the ocean, hikes, etc. Awesome camera.

I bought mine at B&H in New York in early December 2001. It has worked perfectly since I opened the box.

The firm ware update was added when Canon announced it, and I had no problem with its installation or operation. Similarly, the two software updates were added without any problem. I use a couple of 64MB CF's, and they work fine.

It took a bit of time to dispel my old habits of caring about how much film I was using, but that too has passed.

The manuals are only moderately helpful, and I believe that a forum like this one is essential to getting very much utility from the G1 beyond the point-and-shoot stage. I have a couple of Canon EOS bodies and flashes, but the controls on the G1 are not as similar to the EOS system as the appear. SImilarly, the EOS flash system may well be "compatible" but there are significant differences. My best flash pictures are taken in Manual mode with ASA 50 settings and an elderly Metz auto-flash (I believe that its added power gives a better tonal range to indoor shots as a matter of balance -- the 220EX seems fairly weak). The other EOS flashes work better, but the best shots seem to need the extension cord for off camera operation (the shadows are more natural).

I also got the lensmate and have a UV on it to protect the lens. The lensmate's lens cap (side squeeze) is superior to the standard issue Canon cap (friction model) that comes with the G1.

A friend has a Nikon 990, and we have compared experiences. The swivel LCD and hot shoe on the G1 make me pleased that I did not get the 990, and I have no regrets about my decision to get the G1.

Sorry to put a downer on things after reading so many positive responses, but: (grab your hankies ;)

I bought my first G1 on Easter Saturday from my local branch of Jessops (chain of photographic stores here in the UK). Dead as a dodo. Battery wouldn't charge (probably a bust connection inside) so there was no power to even get the lens out or the LCD monitor on. Not good, and this should have sounded warning bells.

The store was closed on Sunday, so I had to wait until Monday to swap it for a new one. This one actually switched on and I took some pretty good pics (for a complete novice) over the next week.

Yesterday, I downloaded a couple of black and white pics I'd taken in a dark room and noticed... a stuck pixel - bright white on a black background, same location in every shot. I tried a few more test shots, confirmed it, rang the store and took my second G1 back this afternoon. I tried this one out before I bought it and couldn't see any hot/stuck pixels using the LCD screen, even when zoomed in. So I exchanged it for mine. Credit should go to Jessops for at least sweetening it a bit with £20 of vouchers.

About an hour ago I got home and immediately took a few shots of a dark room. Yep, another hot pixel - this time in the lower right of the picture, quite near the edge. It appears purple on colour shots, white on black and white. So I'll be ringing the store again on Monday and arranging to take my third G1 back. Not good.

Are Canon not putting these things through even a basic CCD QA process? Surely all that's required is to take a pic in an entirely black room, then either manually check the pic or run it through an alogrithm to check for any pixel that isn't coming out the right colour? On a £700 camera, I'd expect at least this much checking. Are they expecting that the average punter won't notice the odd hot pixel or are they just oblivious to the problem?

For what it's worth - apart from the teething troubles, it's a great camera. I'm stunned by the quality of the pics in RAW mode and the continuous mode is a lot of fun, especially in black and white (I can get about 18 pics in one go before the internal memory fills up). I bought a 340MB Microdrive with the first G1 and that's performed absolutely flawlessly. Oh, and this one (not sure about the first two) has the red stamp designating the firmware upgrade, so it looks like G1s in the UK are now shipping with it.

It is good. I could demand my money back and go for a different camera, but to be honest there's nothing on the market for the same price that seems comparable. I hope you have better luck with yours!

I have a few dead pixels in my LCD screen, but everything else seems flawless.

I have had my G1 since november 2000, and I have taken 3000+ photos with it. Not a single problem, except that I have way too little CF storage!!!!

A friend of mine has the G1, too. We bought them together at the same store, so we got a nice discount and a camera bag as well. He also has no problems whatsoever.

I can highly recommend the G1!! (Unless you have the mony to buy a D30. Or a D1.)
