I am anxious to know how many of us own a perfect g1. I am always
reading about problems with the g1, hot pixels, failed firmware
updates, etc. Since I have bought my g1 it has been perfect. I
just charge the battery and no problems. I bet I am not alone.

Sorry to put a downer on things after reading so many positive responses, but: (grab your hankies
I bought my first G1 on Easter Saturday from my local branch of Jessops (chain of photographic stores here in the UK). Dead as a dodo. Battery wouldn't charge (probably a bust connection inside) so there was no power to even get the lens out or the LCD monitor on. Not good, and this should have sounded warning bells.
The store was closed on Sunday, so I had to wait until Monday to swap it for a new one. This one actually switched on and I took some pretty good pics (for a complete novice) over the next week.
Yesterday, I downloaded a couple of black and white pics I'd taken in a dark room and noticed... a stuck pixel - bright white on a black background, same location in every shot. I tried a few more test shots, confirmed it, rang the store and took my second G1 back this afternoon. I tried this one out before I bought it and couldn't see any hot/stuck pixels using the LCD screen, even when zoomed in. So I exchanged it for mine. Credit should go to Jessops for at least sweetening it a bit with £20 of vouchers.
About an hour ago I got home and immediately took a few shots of a dark room. Yep, another hot pixel - this time in the lower right of the picture, quite near the edge. It appears purple on colour shots, white on black and white. So I'll be ringing the store again on Monday and arranging to take my third G1 back. Not good.
Are Canon not putting these things through even a basic CCD QA process? Surely all that's required is to take a pic in an entirely black room, then either manually check the pic or run it through an alogrithm to check for any pixel that isn't coming out the right colour? On a £700 camera, I'd expect at least this much checking. Are they expecting that the average punter won't notice the odd hot pixel or are they just oblivious to the problem?
For what it's worth - apart from the teething troubles, it's a great camera. I'm stunned by the quality of the pics in RAW mode and the continuous mode is a lot of fun, especially in black and white (I can get about 18 pics in one go before the internal memory fills up). I bought a 340MB Microdrive with the first G1 and that's performed absolutely flawlessly. Oh, and this one (not sure about the first two) has the red stamp designating the firmware upgrade, so it looks like G1s in the UK are now shipping with it.
It
is good. I could demand my money back and go for a different camera, but to be honest there's nothing on the market for the same price that seems comparable. I hope you have better luck with yours!
