I've been looking at this camera for a long time, and will be getting one soon. Just would like your suggestions on the right places to look for it as far as online merchants.. Seems like there are lots of iffy places around... For a suggestion: usaphotonation.com has the drebel +lens and most of the cords minus a battery and charger for 519.00.... I called to confirm this and they say it is brand new and is the usa model... sounds iffy to me.. On the other hand, i can get the full drebel kit + another battery, usb card reader, 512mb flash card, a bag, lens cleaning kit for like right at $1000 from butterfly photo... seems like that setup would get me up and running with this nice camera for awhile... Any thoughts or suggestions on who to go with and the best possible price??

Confused canon customer..

I bought camera &kit lens from Butterfly no problems. Do not buy accessories from butterfly as they are way over priced - just decline accessories when ordering they did not harrass me what so ever. I ordered over the phone so no feed back on their web based ordering system.

I bought my accessories from B&H Photo, I had great service from them also.

First of all, if it doesn't have a battery or charger, what you are getting is a box that has been opened, if anything at all since that is the practice of a bad company. I believe the best price on a rebel + kit lens is $850 at buydig.com. Also, I'm very much against those packages that come with a bunch of stuff, because they are usually just a good way to spend money on sub-standard equipment. Here is what I would do if I were you

Get the digital Rebel from buydig with the kit lens for $850 (btw, on fredmiranda, you could get a used one for about $650, but keep in mind that unless they have an extended warranty you pay to have transfered over to you, the warranties are non-transferable). Perhaps if you want, get just the body and order the ef-s 18-55 USM that's now available for pre-order in the states if you want.

Get some lens tissue (I think the disposable is better than the microfiber cloth), lens cleaning liquid, and a lens blower brush

Get some extra batteries off of Ebay. There are aftermarket batteries out there that are about $5/each. Also, get as much memory as you can afford off of ebay. Microdrives are the best bang for the buck, but not as good a product CF type I. If you get an OEM microdrive (white label) make sure the last 3 digits in the serial number are 41C, 42B, OR 43b. You should be able to get a 4gb microdrive for about $260 or a 1gb sandisk ultra II for about $165.

Get an external card reader that says it's USB2 Hi-speed (I use the Sandisk Imagemate 8 in 1).

Outside of a case and some more lenses in the future, I think this is everything you need.

Yeah, ive been watching butterfly's prices and they seem like they are real competitive compared to most other stores... They seem to have as good a rep, maybe better than buydig.com...

Thanks for the info, there is so much trash you have to sort through on the internet today and this will be my first venture into the digital realm, so I just dont know what is good and not good about certain accesories such as cf cards and such...

Just remember, before buying from a store you haven't bought from before, check resellerratings.com. As far as acessories, sticking to name brand stuff is the safe way to go. Just remember, in the future you are going to want to shoot in RAW even if you don't now, so it's better to have too much space than too little.
