I posted this in the "Retouching" forum, but only received a "I should be overjoyed with Nikon software" reply.

Here's the issue: I used to use PSCS RAW dialog box to make a number of corrections to my images before actually editing them in CS. I found myself longing for a viewer of NEF files, so I dowloaded the NIKON VIEW (Free) viewer from Nikon. Apparently, this went into PSCS and changed the RAW editor from the nice full featured one, to a simple 2 option one (Brightness and exposure compensation).

Well, long story short, I finally found the fix on Adobe's site, but it didn't work. It told me to rename the Nikon file in CSONLY to something different. I did this, but all my NEF files still open with the "cheesy" 2 option dialog box. I found a work around to this - If I open the NEF file using the "Open As" option - then pick the Camera Raw option, it'll use the original CS RAW editor.

I can't seem to make it default to this - does anyone know how to fix this?? Thought the D70 forum would know more about this, as it might have happened to others here.

Thanks,
Naz

Have you tried to re-install Adobe raw plug-in. If NV installation has overwritten something in your plug-in directory, that should fix it. You can download adobe Raw 2.2 from their website.

CS> Plugins> File Filters

You can rename them or move them. Can't remember the exact name, but these will allow ACR to work. Get ACR 2.2 from Adobe - free download.

Thanks, mate.

I had the same problem, but hadn't identified the source of it.

If this doesn't work you also need to look in the folder C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins\Adobe Photoshop Only\File Formats and rename the files starting withNEF in there also.

Hello,

I solved that problem by renaming the file "Nikon NEF Plugin.8BI" to "Nikon NEF Plugin.8BI.OLD"

I found that file in \Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins\Adobe Photoshop Only\File FormatsHope it works for you.
Kind regards,

Tom.

Hmm...you may want to uninstall PSCS and reinstall. Then reinstall the Adobe RAW Plug-in.

OR...maybe just remove the Adobe RAW Plug-in. Start PS, then shut it down. Reinstall the Plug-in and start PS. Perhaps now by it seeing a new Plug-in, it will make it the new default.

the renaming is considerably quicker and it does work (on PCs anyway...)

Try this:

The following should be done after installing Nikon software.

Move or Remove or Rename Camera Raw.8bi in \Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins\File Formats.

Copy Adobe Camera Raw 2.2 plugin (it is called Camera Raw.8bi) to the above folder.

Plugin available from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=2460

Rename "Nikon NEF Plugin.8bi" in \Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins\Adobe Photoshop Only\File Formats to "Nikon NEF Plugin.old"
Problem Solved

Cheers
