Anyway, I've had this before albeit not Chinese sites, and ended up reporting to the offending ISP/pipe supplier. I'm sure Phil has looked/tried this, but anyway here's some info I found:-

I believe there was a news report not too long ago about how China is one of the largest countries to break copyright laws and produce a lot of knock offs. I guess when your a country of millions of people and cannot think for yourself then you must rely on stealing from other countries.

This wouldn't help with them stealing the text, but would make life a bit harder for them wrt. product shots and samples. Just put a "Copyright - Phil Askey, DPReview.com - if this photo appears on a non-dpreview.com website it is in violation of copyright laws".

That's probably the most effective way to hit them.
If pconline can "live" with a bad reputations, their announcers can't.

Clausiam,

We don't want to have to 'uglify' our images as they appear on the page, however all larger images carry our copyright. The thieves at pconline simply erase these copyright messages (or crop them out) before resizing the images and using them on their own pages.

I think you can forget that approach as the operators of Guangdong Province are completely non-responsive to any abuse reports, which might explain the vast numbers of servers hosted for spammers in their IP allocations. I used to work for an ISP and we never had any feedback at all, positive or negative, from abuse reports concerning Guangdong Province's IP space. We tried escalating to the Chinese central NIC, and even to APNIC on a couple of more serious occasions, again to no effect.

Although, it's not going to be of much help in your situation, we eventually gave in with abuse reports and completely blacklisted their IP space from our mailservers due to the spam problem. By the time I left we were simply discarding any traffic coming to or from their IP space at our border routers. We never got a single complaint from one of our customers that they couldn't reach a server in that block either, which probably says a lot about the number of legitimate servers hosted there.

I guess that just leaves putting a really obvious (C) DPReview watermark across the middle of applicable images. It's less than ideal, especially for sample images, but under the circumstances something I could certainly live with.

It is clearly extremely unfortunate for a legitimate business that these people behave as the do and apparently are beyond the reach of any normal channel. But that fact is absolutely no excuse for racist comments on these forums.

Phil, I hope there is something you can do to stop these pirates but please don't let this sorry affair be a springboard for some people to launch anti any country or culture comments using your resources...

for one thing, copyrights are not widely enforced in China. Most of the people do not speak english so emailing them in english is of no help. I just came back from visiting some relatives in Hong Kong and China. In both countries you can buy knockoffs and counterfeit CDs, DVDs and brand name products like Gucci, Polo etc. Hong Kong is ahead of China in dealing with this, but still has a long way to go. Corruption in China is very rampant, so it'll take many years and a major change to the government for things to get better.

Indeed. And it's unfortunate that sites such as these are considered heroes by other net users cause they translate foreign articles so everyone can understand them. They're also very common in Thailand since a lot of Internet users in Thailand have only local Internet access, and there are sites that mirror entire foreign sites locally.

Chinese people actually know all about copyright laws and they do follow them, but only for Chinese products! Stealing from foreigners are considered normal and are encouraged...

A large portion of the Chinese industry is based on copying western technology and products without paying for it. I believe there isn't even a Chinese law that forbids violating foreign copyrights.

BTW, a while ago I read the story of several large chinese ships and even buildings which design & technical wise are exact clones of western world originals. No doubt they didnt payed the architects for the blue prints. Must be a funny sight, visiting Bejing suddenly you see the office building where you work every day..

And there's this rumour about several Chinese industrial cities being renamed after western countries. So they can label the products made in these places "Made In Germany, proc" or something like that.

I was looking for this thread. I had the same idea when I read Phil's article on this. I'll be contacting some of their advertisers thru this coming week. Sites like that are all about money. It's the only way you'll ever get their attention.

My entire site design, layout, coding, code comments, icons, style sheets - and even the text intro - was completely ripped off by a drug 'charity' related to the Scientologists, five times over!!

Check it out: http://www.urban75.com/rip_off.html

There's also an excellent site listing stolen sites - perhaps Phil should get pconline listed! http://www.urban75.com/rip_off.html

If it is the "culture" of the Chinese Communist government to ignore copyright, as decades of evidence proves, then what are you objecting about? The facts are the facts and THOUSANDS of other legimate companies have products that have been copied and sold with the blessing of the Chinese Communist government. Your comment about "beyond the reach of any normal channel" simply means that the government endorses such conduct...PERIOD.

So you are suggesting to boyscott Canon?
