Hi all,

Stepped out on the front porch with my cup of coffee this afternoon, and this little guy caught my eye. I immediately went back inside, mounted the TCON300 and hoped he was still there. I have absolutely no idea what kind of bird he is. :o/

Cropped only.

Hi Vance,

Nice shot! I had a quick look around and the closest I could find was a Baltimore Cardinal, though the illustration I had was different and very old,
regards,
Colin

Thanks Colin,

I guess he and a buddy (there were two but one flew off) are lost. Or they will be summering in the south this year. :o)

I think I saw another, very light green one with him, but it matched the leaves of the tree so well that I lost sight of it. Working graveyard shift, my mind isn't as sharp as usual. Okay, it's never really sharp, but working nights dulls it even more. ;o)

Vance,

I'm not an avid birder, but what you took a picture of is a Scarlet Tanager. You took a picture of the male, the other bird you saw was probably the female which is not brightly colored. The Scarlet Tanager is not a common bird to see, but as you've shown, quite a striking site. Great picture, can't wait to get my TCONN300, got word that Amazon shipped it today, the promo discount worked and I got it for $452.

Enjoy,

Mike

Mike, Good thing you straightened that out. Everyone knows the birds in Baltimore are the Orioles.

Vance, Much safer sitting on the porch. Great capture.

Hi Vance,
great work, I don't think that little guy is very common around these parts..

was out at Brazos Bend St Park a week ago

took the E-10 and 14B. Within two minutes at Elm Lake I was kicking myself for not taking the tcon300

took lots of shots of gators and birds but most were too far away for the 14B.

have you been out to Brazos Bend? It is just west of Rosharon, about an hour from my place, less if I don't see any bears....

btw. what do you think about PhotoPoint? need to find a place to start posting my stuff

really love the the E-10

Hi Bob,

No I haven't been out there yet. My parents used to love to go camping out there when my dad was alive.

Ron Sprouse was out that way not too long ago. He was able to get some nice shots of the local wildlife.

I get lucky I guess because I live close to the bay. I suppose a lot of the migratory birds use it as a landmark.

There are some parrots that fly around here a lot and now that I know the TCON300 can do it, I'll be trying to shoot them when they come around. Their actually very hilarious to watch as they come in to land in a tree. Some land on less that sturdy limbs and end up hanging upside down. Very noisey as well.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the information. Last time I tried to call the Audoban(sp) Society all the lady would tell me was I needed the bird book. And that was for some sandhill cranes.

I suppose if this keeps up though, I'll need to make a stop at the book store and pick something up.

Search this forum using Amazon and I'm sure you'll come up with the link and information, but I believe the promo has ended. Let me know if you can't find it.

Vance,

If you keep taking pictures as good as this of uncommon birds such as the Scarlet Tanager you can get a job selling your pictures to the Audobon society!

Thanks Mike,

I owe it mostly to a good cup of coffee and a beatiful afternoon. :o)

The red plummage just reached out and grabbed my attention.

Hey Brian,

Yeah, I got both of them! Did you not get my response?

Anyway, I sure appreciate the links she sent me. Sounds like maybe she's a birder?

Hey Vance,

I saw your bird photo and pulled out my 1960 copy of "Petersons field Guide to the Birds of Texas" and found a color drawing of the Scarlet Tanager and the yellow green female. I'm sure there are newer and better books on the market but Petersons is a good book. With all the shots you got of the bird that shows how good a quite camera is with wildlife photos.

The forcast for tomorrow is rain but I hope to get out one way or the other. You need to come up to SA next weekend for Fiesta and the Hill Country is covered with Wildflowers. Did you get your stepup ring for the TCON?

Hey Ron,

Ordered the step up ring the other day. :o)

As for the quiet camera. Believe it or not, I had the focus beep on and everytime it beeped, the bird looked my way. Made some of those shots possible, as most times he had his back towards me.

Hi Vance (Idea Guy)

Looks like you might have another use for your E-10 when the E-20 comes out. Just put the camera on timer for every 5 minutes and you'll have every bird in the city chirpin' at your doorstep. Better stock-up on some bird seed.
