I had the kids with me during a shoot a couple weeks ago. I came across this photo as I was editing the pics, and it struck me to try some things I've never tried before. I did a bunch of stuff that I can't remember, but I liked the way it turned out. Maybe a tad on the contrasty side, but kind of neat?

Hey Jim,

I like the shot it captures some of the enthusiasm of the kids as they explore their world. Contrasty, yes but it works to evoke a mood.

I think the feeling of this image is sooo cool, and how this turned out... man! I'd be printing it huge!!! I think this is a very rare photo, something you should really hold on to, I really dig this Jim, thanks for sharing your photo!

I like it alot. Great pix and post processing. The only thing I would wish for is that the left kid was more in the picture...

Thanks Harry. I debated about the contrast, but then it just seemed too regular.

Thanks!

Thanks Michiel,

I think you have just inspired me to do so. At least to 8x10. I have some space to fill. It's one of those photos that I like, but also seems over the top at the same time.

You seem interested, so I did something like this in Paint Shop Pro (i don't remember exactly)....

1. Did my regular color photo with some good contrast

2. duplicate layer and converted to b&w, then changed the opacity of that b&w layer to around 80%
3. Merged the layers
4. did another duplicate layer and messed with the overlay blend mode
5. merged the layer
6. duped the layer, then did a soft light blend mode to desire
7. merged the layers
8. cooled down the image using the color balance correction
I think the feeling of this image is sooo cool, and how this turned
out... man! I'd be printing it huge!!! I think this is a very rare
photo, something you should really hold on to, I really dig this

Thanks Mats,

Yeah, I'm with you on my son at the left. I had 4 shots of them running, so I looked at the others first, but this was the only one that was sharp. Just another centimeter over would be huge. Oh well, it's not the kind of photo that I could stage, so I need to take what I can get! :-)

Thanks again!

Hi.. the effect kind of reminds me of the difference between watching the lighting on a soap opera and that of a movie in the theatre. I really like this effect :) And the photo is great as always, too!

Hi Jim...I really like what you did here. When I first clapped these old eyes on it, I would have sworn it was 3D. It has a real 3 dimensional quality to it for me even though I can't really say why. Perhaps it's because of the sharpness of the children vis a vis the background, plus the high contrast. ??? Congrats anyway Jim. It's a keeper for sure!

Kodachrome. That is what it makes me think of. Old Kodachrome photos would start to look like this if left in a hot envirnment like an attic. I LOVE this picture.

Oh, just wanted to say the DOF also give it the old feel for me. Darn it, I need to get some kids and try my hand at some of these shots!

This is an excellent photo Jim; it exudes a very distinctly warm memory of childhood for me... playing in the summer without a care.

Anyways, I really love the high contrast look to it... you were able to bump up the contrast without blowing the details.

BTW, I have always been a big fan of your posts and photos to STF even if this is the first time I am replying to your post. There are a number of photos of yours that are burned into my memory.

Thanks for sharing.

Regards,

I really like it, but I have no idea why :). It just looks like it all fits together. It has the feel of a black and white photo, but different somehow.

Hope that helps!

I really like the treatment you gave this image.... contrast and all. I like the image a great deal as well. If I had to do it all over again, I'd focused on the TWO kids running along the path. However, you know me...
everything has to be simplified for simple sake :-)

I guess I just really like a VERY obvious focal point in my images. That's one thing you can never dispute in my images... where the main subject / focus is.

It is no doubt, an amazing photo Jim.

The high contrast and slightly washed-out colors, contribute in a great way to the atmosphere here.

I also interesting to see how the slightly out of focus foreground, which many photographers would have cropped it out, gives a further dimension to the mood of the photo.
