Those are great pictures Ron, and that looks like a nice lens combination, good working distance, zoom and lightweight. I use that lens with the Nikon 6t which is similar but 62mm threads.
Took these at the California State Fair today. Boy that 500D close
up lens is tricky. I have only used it a few times, but it
certainly has outstanding potential. Any thoughts or tips?

... just further complicate my decision-making process :-)), that is, do I buy a deciated macro lens vs your setup here, etc. I really want the next purchase to blow the socks off my Coolpix 4500's macro capabilities.

David,:

I have to tell you. I have the 60mm Micro and the 70-300ED with 6T close up filter and I get some stunning shots with my 70-300 + filter. It is SHARP!! It's harder to hand hold at times but there have been times when I thought I could have saved myself some money. I know this doesn't help much with your decision making but it's been my observation.

... elaborate on your use of the 2 different lens setup?

Let's say you're shooting a bee on a flower - which would you use?

If you're doing extreme flower closeups, which would you use?

If you could only keep one based on your preferred photography style, which would it be - why?

Sorry for so many questions :-))

... elaborate on your use of the 2 different lens setup?
I will try ;-) I try and shoot macros every time I go out. So it depends on what I'm primarily doing. If I'm shooting birds, I bring the 70-300 with the 6T. If I'm doing strictly macros, I take the 60mm. I do flowers, and all kinds of bugs and the 60mm has not held me back although there are those few times when I wish I had the added reach, but those times are few and far between.
Let's say you're shooting a bee on a flower - which would you use?
I have only had the 6T for 3 weeks now, Kramp uses it for his macros so I thought I'd give it a shot. I don't use a tripod for anything so in this situation, I would use the 60mm. For the more skittish insects such as butterflies, I would use the 6T. It gives me about 17 inches. But, I have used the 6T for bees as well because I can sit in the middle of the clover patch and prop up on my elbows and get the bees also. Not the preferred method, but it does work.
If you're doing extreme flower closeups, which would you use?
The 60mm. However, I had the opportunity to use the 6T set up on a hike in MN as I needed the zoom and the convenience of being able to take off the filter at will. I got some very nice flower close-ups but it is difficult to hand hold after awhile. The sharpness amazed me.

Samples of flowers/plants and a little bee with the 6T here: http://www.pbase.com/sunny713/mn&page=2 with EXIF data underneath
If you could only keep one based on your preferred photography
style, which would it be - why?
The 60mm because I can hand hold and it is more versatile in that I can get the flower close-ups and the bees and occasionally I can get the more skittish insects. I have a better chance of getting a little of everything I want. I believe that my experiences come from the fact that I don't use a tripod. If you use a tripod, you may see things differently.
Sorry for so many questions :-))
No problem! You have helped me more times than I care to count. I hope I haven't confused you more. I am very much a novice at all of this and am speaking as someone working from the ground up. ;-))

... about that, and I have to admit I did not know anything about the solution you've suggested. I do intend to purchase lenses and accessories with very careful thought about how I inetend to use them, and whether they would be appropriate for use in paid shooting.

Thanks!
with your 50 mm 1.8. I have read many threads about this and they
are really very satisfied with the results. I do not know the macro
ratio of this combination but may be more than 1:1.

Bugra.

I can't speak about the 6T, but the 500D definitely has some drawbacks on the 70-300D. It is quite heavy for a filter so the lens doesn't just creep, it downright slides all over if you are not careful. DOF is minimal and focus is difficult, but when you get it right, it is very nice. I bought it with a future purchase of the Nikkor 70-200VR in mind as the thread sizes match and it won't full the focal length of the lens out. That said, it is easy to carry as opposed to yet another lens.

I still need lots more practice with it and I am sure that a monopod or tripod would have helped alot too (not to mention not having the kids tugging on my shirt "Daddy, can we go now?")

... the 70-300D - thanks for this info, Ron! It sure took lots of skill from you to tame that setup.
