Geez, I'm loving this place. In fact, yesterday I purchased an annual pass, and I figure with only a $3 bridge toll (each way), and about $5 in gas (round trip), for my Geo Metro, a full day of play for $11 total, is pretty darn reasonable..... even for a poor man like myself.

Red Tail Hawk

An Osprey ? ....or is it a Perigrine Falcon ? Help me out here....

This little Meerkat is king of the hill :-)

The Prairie Dogs are just too darn cool :-)

No matter how many we see, these things are just too beautiful to get tired of, huh ?

Here's my favorite creature, the Mandrill..... a fairly heavy crop, but you get the idea ! How would you like to run into this guy in a dark alley ?

Pano of the SF Bay bridge on the left, and San Fran on the right, taken from Treasure Island, on the way home from the zoo

Hope you guys like them,
Peace,
Fish

PS, I have really been working hard to eliminate blowouts, but I think I might have to start doing a few bracketing shots, and follow with a bit of PPP.......

Very little PPP. Just some minor noise removal on the Red Tailed Hawk, and the Mandrill, and a little more agressive on the pano.

Oh, and hey patesler, I didn't stitch this pano..... I just took the shot at my S7000's widest angle, and cropped the top and bottom.

Thank you guys,
Peace,
Fish

Yeah, I can see why.

Excellent shots.
Again, I have to envy the clarity.

Nice shots, Fish. I like the wide angle shot, and I really like this one a lot!

Once in a while, please check back several pages in the forum, for posts that may have been overlooked. Thanks!

Fish,

There is no question that you are on earth!

Now those are fine captures. A few have slightly blown highlights but the photos are still enjoyable.

Fish, that's a nice collection of shots. Zoos are a great place to be with a camera. Zoos are also notorious places for having to deal with blown highlights. As most zoo enclosures, have walls around them, but an open top, you usually have to deal with sunlight streaming down from above, right on top of the animals heads. Couple this with the fact that you can't be there during very early morning or in the evening, blown highlights is almost a fact of life at zoos. About the only way to cambat this, in most circumstances, is to visit on an overcast day.

I just have to say it again, these shots have a lot more to do with "the place" than they do with the guy taking the shots. I can only imagine what some of the photo pros on this forum would be able to do here. Plus, the fact that San Fran is so often shrouded in low clouds and fog..... no hard shadows and less blowouts....

Give a guy with limited experience (like myself) a decent camera, (like an S7000) send him to this place, and suddenly, it almost looks like he knows what he's doing :-)

Peace,
Fish

Great pics Fish! Im from Union City, what part of Bay are you from? I also bought a pass its well worth the price.

Don't ever admit that anything other than your talent had anything to do with a good shot. It is so seldom in life that you are given credit for doing something well, that you should take credit whenever possible. Bask in the glow, while you have a chance.

I always think of the time that Sam Sneed was asked if a hole-in-one was more skill or luck. His response was that its skill when you do it yourself, and luck when the other guy does it. It seems like that would be a good way to look at photos.

Looks like a Prairie Falcon. The Peregrine has a tawny belly.

Loved the Red-Tail, too.

I liked your shot of the tiger, too. Here's one I took at the Denver Zoo a few weeks back:

Good thing there was a pit and a fence between he and me. He looked hungry! ;-)

Dave

Well thank you. I suppose that in a year or two (or three ?) I might be to a point where I feel like my skill is having more to do with my good shots than the "luck factor".

BTW, I was talking to a retired professional photographer about a month ago (he was shooting with a Canon EOS 1D's.... that dog :-) and he touched on the luck factor (which reminds me so much of fishing) and he said, "You can be the best photographer on the planet, with the very best equipment, but if the 'perfect shot' does not present itself, your not going to snap the perfect shot"...... which explains why some of the most incredible shots are occasionally taken by novices...... and why that kid on his first fishing trip of his life, using the snoopy rod, catches the lake record !

Skill is a great thing, but I will take all the luck I can get ! :-)

Peace,
Fish

I'm from the Fairfield-Suisun area..... about 1 1/2 hours from the SF Zoo, but well worth the drive..... So much so, that I think I am going to have to go back tomorrow :-)

Peace,

I think I could just look at Tiger photos all day :-)

Fish, the Red Tail Hawk is gorgeous! I downloaded to my HD just to keep looking at it and to send to a friend who is into birds.

Can you blip out the tiny spot in the center of the eye? somehow it attracts my attention when it shouldn't.

Pano is cool too. I tried to take a shot last month, but didn't have my S7000 with me ;> (
