The first two are new shots of the Golden Eagle, which I took today, and the last one, is the best from last week.....

I think the first two show better contrast, one because of the back ground darkness, and the other because of the background color..... but I can't decide if the bird looks as good..... and I have sure been going through a lot of photo paper already, as it is !

Opinions please,
Thanks much,
Fish

  1. 2 and #3 are both good.
Hard to pick between those two.
  1. 1 is not as good as the other two.

Hey Fish. I feel the most important ingredient in any good closeup bird shot, is they eyes. For that reason, plus it's a very good, sharp shot, I give my vote to number 3.

Fish:

This can be kind of a tough choice. These shots gave a difficult exposure situation, with the extremes of dark and light, on the bird, and the harsh, overhead lighting.

No. 3 has the best sharpness and detail, along with the best eye color; however, that shadow over part of the eye is quite unappealing. The highlights, on the top and back of the head, as well as beak, are blown out.

No. 2 No harsh shadow; but, again some blown out highlights.

No. 1, the best exposure, with the least blown out areas; but the eye is dark and lifeless.

I would try to burn the dark areas, on the face, especially the eye, on No. 1. If necessary, I might then try a bit of increase in color sarturation on the eye. If, after doing this, the eye still had decent detail, I would go with No. 1.

If you go with one of the others, try to tone down the blown highlights. If you are using PS CS, the highlight/shadow toll can sometimes prodce a dramatic improvement to such areas. If there is any information in these areas, burning will help. If not, though it would be more work, a little cloning can improve those areas.

Either 1 or 2, I slightly prefer 1. I think with 3 the contrast is too high, especially that dark shadow in the eye area. Both need a bit of PP to fine tune, what editing software are you using?

Personally, I'm all about the contrast in the foreground, with the contrast in the background a secondary. As such, the third shot, with harsher shadow-contrast, looks excellent to me. I think the color of the feathers in the second shot are the best, but the third shot definately stands out.

Nice job!

geez, I thought (or was hoping anyway) that this might make it easier :-) Now I can tell from the totally mixed replies that it isn't just me. I think I got 3 1/2 votes for #1, and 5 votes for both #2 and #3..... So I still can't decide. DOH ! :-)

I think I might just have to try again, and take a shot of this Eagle that blows all three of these away :-) ....but my luck, I'll take another one which is just about "as good" then will be trying to decide between 4 shots :-l Oh well.

Thanks again guys,
Fish

I like 3 the best, the light looks just right and the bird looks more menacing, it also seems sharpest. #1 is a little dark on the lower portion of the birds face, #2 is quite good but 3 has more dramatic light. My opinion of course.

No harm in having another go but the shots you have are already good they just need a bit of PP. Most shots do, cameras have limitations, the lighting isn't always as you would want etc.
