Pants pockets. I turned in my cameras years ago specifically because phones were making progress so fast. Then they started adding 3, 4, or 5 cameras instead of making the primary camera better. I understand where you are coming from, but I already gave up on owning a DSLR because of size. I transitioned to the Samsung NX with a pancake and it was almost pocketable (as small or smaller than X-E4), but gave up on that 4 years later, again due to size. So now I know myself. Actually I hadn't considered buying a used camera from a major retailer. Sounds like a decent compromise to ensure some minimum quality level versus gambling on ebay. Thank you.- psperl

You aren't wrong. If there wasn't a pandemic severely cutting back on my ability to travel, I would likely buy one used right now as you suggested. I've got a big "thank god the virus is over" trip planned for August, so I will almost certainly pick up something before then.- psperl

I did consider a body+pancake. My shortlist was the Canon Eos M6 Mark II, Fuji X-E4, and Sony a6400. The bodies were smallish, but once you add the pancake I feel it really hinders pocketability because the lens sticks out. If I was still comparing against the X100V I think it would be a fair...- psperl

In case anyone is curious, I'm pretty convinced that the right camera for me is the Ricoh GR III. It's the best truly pocketable fixed prime APS-C camera there is. It has OIS and USB-C, two things I would like to have. The missing flash is annoying but workable. I am holding off making a...- psperl

I am considering an RX100 variant more and more every day. I like the lens on the VA and also the price. I'm trying to convince myself that there's nothing on the VII I really need, and also holding out that the VIII rumors about returning to faster shorter lens are true.- psperl

I don't think the RX1R can be pocketed. While amazingly compact for a full-frame, the lens sticks out too far. The Ricoh is the biggest sensor I think you can squeeze in a pocket though, so I'm considering it.- psperl

I'm with you 100% on preferring the V and VA over the VI and VII because of the lens. If I went with a Sony it would be the VA for sure. Thank you for stating that you think the RX100 series doesn't compete with the X100 for overall image quality. That is the #1 reason to get a dedicated camera...- psperl

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I agree that IBIS/OIS is primarily a video thing and that the X100V is likely the be the perfect camera for the way I prefer to take pictures.
