Not my experience
You often have to choose your focal length and 'typical distance' in order to tune MFA optimally. The only exception I have found is the 16-50/2.8 which seems to have the same MFA value at 16mm as at 50mm on my copy (lucky!)
A shame Sony doesn't let us set MFA values at...
So in a nutshell you are selling it because of the APS-C lens situation
A perfectly reasonable reason and sad that Sony just 'dropped' APS-C for so long (still?) particularly considering the size benefit that it offers for bodies, and particularly lenses in this mount
None of the above... they are all too short and the super-zooms and 55-210 will not give you satisfactory IQ
The Sony 70-400G - though it needs an adapter. I have some shots from a safari taken with this lens and a NEX-5R in my samples gallery
I would suggest using this lens with the...
Think about it for a minute... with the exception of separate PDAF sensors, what does an A-mount SLT body have that an E-mount body doesn't when using A-mount SSM lenses?
We aren't talking about implementing E-mount lens features, like DMF, with A-mount lenses. We are talking about...
Hi Justin
Oh, I wouldn't say I'm doing things the 'right way' at all... I'm actually not very happy with the AF I get with my 70-400GII and A77II. I suspect there may be some kind of compatibility issues between my specific copy of the lens and my particular camera body but it has proved...
For me yes, I was almost never able to successfully take BIF prior to owning the A77II (and even with it I don't get the AF I want)
I had a few lucky shots and that was it - one in 20 or maybe one in 30 at best. I had to limit myself to birds in trees, or on water or wandering around on the...
For optimal optical performance:
- Sigma 18-35/1.8 via sigma Emount adapter
- Sony A-mount 16-50/2.8 via LA-EA3 adapter
I have the second lens myself and can vouch for it. I don't have the first but all reports concerning it are very positive
Both are annoyingly large however
For some...
Thanks for the feedback
Almost no point in me buying it then as it will be useless for BIF with my 70-400GII without lock-on AF (Not having Danny's skills I can't do MF with movement). What a shame and a stupid marketing decision by Sony (obviously it would be technically possible as the SLT...
A-mount 16-50/2.8?
;-)
Fits all the above criteria except size (though is similar in size to the A-mount Zeiss 16-80/3.5-4-5 with suggests an E-mount version could maybe match the 16-70/4?) and no OSS. Cheaper too... (a lot cheaper!). Very nice lens, actually
I wish Sony would make...
Will Fuji, or any mirrorless system give you the AF performance you need for birds?
I bought an A77II to go with my 70-400G specifically for this purpose and still don't get what I want. I suppose there's an outside chance the A6300 with LA-EA1/3 will be OK for this, but I would be surprised...
Make stuff up, why not?
That's not a function menu. There is no function menu on this camera, which makes changing its various parameters a chore that most won't bother to do... which is why Sony themselves put it in the 'Families & Casual Users' category of their 'camera pyramid' a while...
Where is the function menu? Kindly point to it...
No, you can't because it's not there
The end result is that using this camera in anything other than auto mode is a total PITA
You may not be able to, but I can
I use an Eizo calibrated 'professional' monitor and an Firepro GL graphics card...
There is no Fn button and no 'function menu' which means any changes you want to make to configuration requires diving into those horrible menus
The A5100 is basically an Auto-only camera...
Regarding the jump frop 16 to 24MP, no, I personally don't think it's worthwhile. I personally prefer...
