Perhaps I am overracting, but this email blew my mind. Here is someone I dont know from Adam, asking me to send him my full rez files, and flat out saying it would be out of the goodness of my heart, not for cash.

I know a lot of my africa photos are nothing spectacular and wont end up in N. Geo., but man..... Yeah, I'm thinking no.....

Eric,

Was browsing your photos of S. Africa and like several of them very much. I am
an avid photographer myself, but unfortuneately am confined to the Midwest USA.
My wife and I are remodeling our bedroom in an African theme, and I have been to
my local zoo in an attempt to get some photos to frame for the walls.
Unfortuneately the fences and background do not lend themselves to anything
realistic. I would like to ask your permission to use several of your photos
for this purpose, and would like to get the original files if possible, as I am
wanting to do some photoshop work and print them at a fairly large size.

The photoshop work I am looking to do is using a technique that Stephen LeQuier
put together that gives a very realistic watercolor appearance.

I am sure ideally you would like to get paid for this, however budget
constraints right now don't really permit me to make much of an offer.

Please let me know if this might be possible.

Thanks

I shoot at a lot of events with new artists and designers so I get the "I'm poor" sob story pretty often. I sent an email to Canon USA asking for a free 1D Mark II telling them my budget did not allow me to buy one. So far, no response from them but I'm crossing my fingers.

Just tell them it's $50 a print, take it or leave it.

send anyone your originals. Tell him you'd be glad to get them printed and sell them to him at cost, if you feel generous. How can he argue with that?

I had a similar request for some original (raw) images of Richmond. I could not find a way to justify the risk of losing control of those images, though the pics requested were not going to make anyone rich (especially me!). In the end, he dropped it.

Some things just "ain't" wise.

Treat this as an opener. He's not saying he won't pay, only that he can't pay much. Figure out what you want for use of your image and give him a price. Typically magazines pay about $50 for a 1/4 page photo that will be seen by millions. What do you think permission to use one of your shots for a bedroom decoration is worth?

I hope you're not implying that if he finds it on the web, he can get it for free. The web is probably where he saw the photo to begin with. I would suggest he pay for it or do without it. That's what most people do when faced with something we want but can't afford.

Sounds like he has paid you the ultimate compliment as he is not only will to hang your photo in his house, but also in the most private of areas, the bedroom.

This is a major accomplishment to be proud of.

Weather you charge him or give him the photos is not my business.

However, on that note, I will mention that just yesterday, I printed up multiple 13*19's of a couple of my Thunderbird pics from the airshow here this past weekend.

I put them on a table with a note that said 'Take Me' and sure enough, buy the end of the day, they where gone.

Little things/efforts go a long way in the Karma Dept.

You have some great pictures. I went to S. Africa a few years ago and I, also, have some great pictures. I assume you are not professional and don't intend to take that very painful step. So why not let someone else enjoy your photos? You might want to ask him which ones he wants and put a copyright notice in the corner.

Your payment: "Gee, somewhere someone sees and enjoys my pictures every day."

Seems like good karma to me.

sure it's for real, some guy want's your original files, doesn't want to pay you for anything if they have the money to remodel the bedroom, they have the money to buy the photo's - pre processed and printed, by you.

My thoughts: If you're an amateur and/or never really had the desire to extract realize financial value from these photos, what do you have to lose? He didn't say he wouldn't pay, just "not much", so if you do seek compensation, ask what he CAN afford -- it might be what they are actually worth to you; how would you know unless you ask? If it were me, I'd be thrilled to help out someone who liked my work. And I'd be really interested in trading him the high rez originals for full rez results of his added PS work -- maybe I'd want that on my walls also.

-Just my 2 cents from the perspective of a pure hobbyist, for I would fully expect a pro or pro-in-the-making to have a different perspective.

I wonder if ofoto or whoever makes the prints will do it for free too? Or if he prints from home, will the ink cartridges and photo paper be free? I wonder how much he will be spending on frames? Although he may be using a free version of PS ;-)

Some people only pay those they have to. I have run across those types who pitch the same sad song of budget restraints and no money. They will either pay or not, and some of them will pay, it has happened to me a few times where they cough up the money from out of the blue :-)

I never remind them that they said they didn't have any money, that just remains one of our little secrets ;-)

If you don't want to do it, just say no.

Perhaps not practical, but I just thought of something. If you don't want to lose control of the original, send him a watermarked version of a 16 bit TIFF of it. Have him make whatever adjustments he wants to make, perhaps recording an action. He sends you the action that you apply on the unwatermarked version and make a print using the service bureau of his choice.

As others have said, what do you have to lose? Unless you seriously think that someday you're going to try and sell these photos, it would seem like this is a flattering and honest request that isn't going to cost you anything.

Beauty is one thing that is never diminished by sharing.

Ultimately it's up to you of course. Maybe the guy's lying and he's secretly planning to make millions of dollars off of it. I'd doubt it, but then again I sometimes give money to homeless people because I think they might actually need it. (Sometimes :-) So maybe I'm a sucker.

I dont know this person in the slightest.

He wants my ORIGINAL, my negative, my full rse file.

From which he could make as many copies as he wants.

Even if only one copy is made I am out the money of a sale.

C'mon Gigo. I may not be a pro, but I still make money selling my prints. Do you see your doctor volunteering to do that necessary surgery for free, just because you cant pay for it? Sure, there are cases where this may happen, but only in rare instances where there is dire need. This fella just wants me to do it for free, for the heck of it. So he and his wife can take enjoyment out of something they didnt pay for.

Maybe you do business this way, but I dont. Now if he was a family member or a dear friend, ABSOLUTELY I would do it, no questions asked. But again, I have no clue who this person is.

Sorry if this seems "selfish" to you. To me it just seems logical.
