As much as I hate to say goodbye, I cannot deal with a camera that backfocuses! I refuse to repair a new camera just bought! And I'm not going to keep thowing the dice until I hit a winner!

Nikon better fix this QC problem pronto, or a lot of other people with the D70 will be abandoning ship!

Backfocus occured with 50mm 1.4D at all apertures in all shooting modes! I heard about this problem before I bought the D70, but I thought it just wouldn't happen to me. Now I know!

you'll never be satisfied. problems happen, recalls happen. that's why there are repair shops. nikon and canon both have had backfocus issues and everything, if you expect every product you buy to be 100% perfect then you should go live in a hut somewhere and make everything you need for yourself (and then hope you never make a mistake).

i spent $25k on a car. its had 3 recalls, been in the shop numerous times.
welcome to an industrialized world.

Cu then, try disposable film cams instead, then you'll have a new cam for every 36 shots, if the first one backfocus ;-) LOL..

I agree that it's damned frustrating to buy a new camera and then have to send it back for repair. The last 35mm camera I bought was a Nikon F3 and I don't remember how many years ago that was.

But it was before the entire photographic process became dependent upon a chip or two or three. The only need for DC power in the F3 was to run the metering system. Everything else was mechanical (I think).

I bought an Apple iBook a year ago. Pulled it out of the box, and the damned thing wouldn't run. Back to the retailer it went.

I've come to the conclusion that when the sophisticated electronic stuff works, it really works. But when it doesn't, look out. Fortunately or unfortunately there's nothing we can do about it. Microprocessors are everywhere and that includes digital SLRS and digicams.

Knock on wood, my D70 doesn't exhibit the moire or BF problems others have discussed here. Once in a very long while, I get a mysterious ERR message, but I've managed to make that go away.

What I love about the D70 is its flexibility for me and for the others who buy it. I love being able to download the images into my computer and print or display photos in minutes. I love the ability to FTP a file to a custom lab for an enlargement that blows my socks off. I love the fact that there's no loss of data when I make a copy of the (NEF) file. I love the ability to share my photos via the Internet with others.

Undoubtedly there are tradeoffs. I am very happy that the D70 is my first digital camera, retiring the old F3.

He has every right to expect better quality from a company like Nikon.

This not an isolated lemon, as can happen with modern day production lines - it is a serious Quality Control problem and reflects very badly on Nikon.

Just grow up, will you !

Sure it's sour grapes on his part to publicly announce that he can't handle the poor quality of the product - but at least he did it in a civilised way.

I can't say the same for most of you !

people return the D70 Nikon will wake up and make a better quality control as with the D70.

Here I get it in 4-6 weeks but I already ordered it about 2 month ago :-( and if there is a problem with backfocus or to much moire I throw it back. I have 14 days to return it.

Lets see...member for 1 week. 32 posts, first post in nikon forum an hour ago (or so). Posting all week about CANON 10d and 50 mm lenses, yet all of the sudden he has a D70 with 50mm 1.4 and he's got problems.

First off, I bet he doesn't even have a d70...Sounds like a Pebgac to me.

(Problem exists between ground and camera).

just return the D70 lemon, wait two months and get another.

By that time the QC should be OK, and it will be cheaper.
