To those who thought they know it all

With the heated feelings going on at the 300D and the D70 forum, your 'pointing out' the DRebel is ,IYO, 'crippleware' on the D70 forum wasn't the most diplomatic move to make, to say the least... Anyone could spot that post sparking into yet another stupid Nikon/Canon war a mile away.
As one of the persons who filled up that thread - if that hurt your
feelings or freedom of expression - apologies.
It's not hurt feelings. You're breaking the rules. If you don't
agree with a thread, or don't want to participate, you have no
right to bomb the thread.
So is posting sparking threads like that...
I agree D70 has more features than the DR.
Agree with whom? All I did was point out the dReb is
'crippleware', the same platform as the one year old 10D, with
functionality that is built in deliberately turned off.

Others hijacked the thread to turn it into "Canon vs. Nikon", but
that wasn't the point of the thread at all.
I can't agree with you here. You wrote:

"dReb is crippled, D70 is not". It doesn't get much more "Canon vs. Nikon" than that. You were literarily begging for it.
And your dive bombing the thread was completely inappropriate.
Just as you starting that thread...

And we didn't just fill up the thread, we posted some nice pics too :-)

Cheers,

Thomas.

Scott

I've pasted the contents of your original post below
dReb is crippled, d70 is not
that's the bottom line.
that's what's driving the canon crowd so nuts.
it was a marketing, not a technical mistake.
they began to take too seriously the rhetoric about Nikon being behind, > no longer a serious challenge, etc.
It's Flame Bait pure and simple.

Similar to the type of gorilla marketing found on Yahoo and certainly is a questionable as anything else that happend in that thread.

When I first saw it I knew where it was going but I didn't post in the thread other than to give my opinion of the topic (see who cares) and that was after the thread started it's quick tumble down hill.

Another day passed with the tone and relevance of the topic accelerating downwards at breakneck speed at which point a bunch of forum participants picked up on the tactic of filling the counterproductive thread till it was full.

You can get on your soapbox and claim to be as pure as the driven snow if you want too but it's hard to deny your role when the original post is viewed.
As one of the persons who filled up that thread - if that hurt your
feelings or freedom of expression - apologies.

No more flame baiting here please. Let us get along with life - take photos and post them.

There are so many things to learn about D70.

Wow - it is such a beautiful city.

I live 40 miles south in Sunnyvale - have a new baby at home (2 weeks) - grounded temporarily. Itching to drive down to the city.

Liked all, but the presidio one and the bay bridge are a w e s o m e.

Where were you when you took these two photos? I would stop by there :-)

I'm ten behind. How 'bout a few D60 + Esse Effe photos? Or is
that 'wrong?' It's still a beautiful city.

There is a little truth in what you say. It's indeed silly to call the 300d crippled.

But the tone of your post continues the same old childish stuff. A year from now both cameras will be yesterday's news and the only folks happy with either one will be those who bought them to take pictures and not because they are obsessed with the latest and greatest- It's likely that those happy folks (in both "camps") will be taking great shots too, which is all that matters. The others will be arguing what to buy next.

I think it would be way better if you posted a great shot and told us how you did it.

Cheers
Craig Ryder
Just looking at this forum, specifically the thread saying that the
300D is crippled, I'm amazed that a lot of folks visiting this site
are already questioning Canon's engineering and marketing. The
company's been at the forefront of consumer-level digital cameras
and months ago boggles the industry with the first sub-1000 dSLR,
the Digital Rebel.

And now, less than a year later, DPReview message board junkies are
trashing it's marketing and engineering!

Quite an amazing feat considering that those guys are spending
millions in research to devise a way of getting everyone's
attention with a new product release.

Don't you even get it? The fact that you're very aware of it's
weaknesses mean that it's not designed for you. Consumers who can
spend $999 for a dSLR cameras and not have tons of time in their
hand to read all the messages on this board are the ones buying it
and telling their friends about it.

Canon is not concerned about the bunch of wannabees who thought
that after spending countless hours on this board, they can
actually criticize their engineers and marketing gurus.

So enough of the trashing and stick to what you know. You guys are
simply using the technology theiy're inventing.

Congrats, though!!

The one showing the Bay Bridge and Downtown was from the corner of Dolores Park, on 20th and Church, with a 50/1.4. I waited a long time for just the right light to shoot that one. I don't like just how much light is spilling off the Bridge ... but that's life in the Bay Area.

The photo with the Palace of Fine Arts and Presidio in the foreground, and the edge of Sausalito ( or Tiburon? ) in the background, I shot from above the Marina. I forget the name of the street, but it's near the top of the hill seperating the Marina and Cow Hollow from the rest of the city. If you take this one particular street, there are stairways where some of the cross streets dead-end. I shot this through a long lens from one of those stairways ... actually this one is from my old Oly digital ZLR, and probably in the 150-200 mm EFL range. Usually I prefer a wider view and more perspective, but I think this building and scene benefit from a flatter, more "stately" perspective...

I have a few more SF shots online ( http://www.valhallaphotos.com/OldSite/html/Galleries/SanFranciscoGallery.htm ), but I've moved to Seattle not too long ago:

Sorry about the yellow frames. I know they don't look great posted in the forum here, and I haven't had time to PS a second copy of the images to post here. If you have a look at them in the context they were meant for, though, it's not so hiddeous:

I know. I had lived there ( actually, in the hills just outside Corralidos (sp?) ) for about nine months. I thought the whole Watsonville area was a place no one had ever heard of ... a part of the ride to Big Sur that no one leaves SR 1 for.

I was kind of getting a little worked up here, but your pictures calmed me right back down! Thanks!!

And here's one from Tivoli in Copenhagen, Denmark. Go easy on the sharpness, it's still that watchmakers p&s ;-)

Great point bringing up WinXP home and Pro. How many people are complaining that Home is crippleware? Is home not just Pro with features removed/disabled and sold for a lower price?

If Microsoft can do that, why can't Canon or Nikon? Ifyou want features that the dRebel doesn't have, welcome to the 10D!!

Just because Nikon's D70 is very serious competition for their own D100, don't expect Canon do run their business the same. Plus, Canon was first to market to the $1,000 dSLR. Maybe Nikon, after seeing what the dRebel was and was not, they made changes to make sure the D70 had more to offer. Who knows. Who cares? Just buy what makes YOU sucessful in taking pictures!

Would you complain to a professional photographer who is making a lot of $$ if you found out he was only using a CoolPix 5000? If he's sucessfull with that camera, leave him alone!
Now, the few of us who did it were trying to make a point - if you
realized it.

Cameras are just tools - it is the photographer who makes the photos.

Canon is a terrific marketing company - just like Microsoft. There
is no reason for Microsoft to release XP Home vs XP Pro - it is a
smart move.

Same with Canon - some people live with it, some don't.

It is one thing a Canon person who owns the camera to say it in the
300D forum, it is another to say it in the D70 forum (you own a D70
right?).

I agree D70 has more features than the DR. If you beat the Canon
down in this forum, it immediately floods the D70 forum with Canon
defenders who take up our bandwidth and push more meaningful
messages out of the first page - our intention was to quickly get
that thread out of the first page - it was more symbolic than what
you think.

However, I still believe DR is a terrific camera - it has certain
strengths of its own. I bought the D70 because it fit well with my
requirements - nothing more, nothing less.

anand

PS: It violates the rules as much as the original intent was -
flame baiting & trolling.
What gives you the right to fill up threads you don't like?

I'm sure that violates the rules.

If you don't like a thread, skip it.

Not surprised, you're defending your conduct. It did violate the
rules. But you're the one making this go on and on.

Isn't this one of the buildings on the Planet Naboo from Star Wars Episode 1?! How did you get there?! I thought George made it all up! wink
