Guys, (and gals)

I'm starting to get depressed by what posts recieve attention and what posts seem to get ignored. I'm reletively new here, so I'm sure my name doesn't always attracted clicks when I make a post like Daniella's or Doug's or Sam's posts do. And their posts should because they have lots of valuable information to share. Hell, I look for certain folks posts' 'cause I know they are going to have merit. Any way,.....I joined in a conversation with Chillihead, Banzai and Paul about some B&W techniques, only after bumping my post because it was lost in a sea of d70 banter, these guys responded. We had some interesting discussion and I said I'd post some comparisons later, at their suggestion, with the info that was disseminated. I indeed posted later, and that post was overtaken by the same banter that I mentioned above. I didn't bump the post to make sure it was seen, I just let it dwindle into the reletive obscurity of "anything past page 3". I put a fair amount of work into what I was comparing, included links to resources, included some pics....all of which I'm happy to do. My gripe is that as I write this, there's another thread that's about to hit it's limit and it's just a the same bunch of muddslinging that seem to go on incessently here. I'm not bothered so much that my work just slipped to the wayside.....that happens, and I don't take it personally. My concern is the stuff that seem to generate so much buzz seems to contain the least usefull information. Of course, I'm generalizing, and there's always good stuff here, but sheesh. I'm about ready to quit "the forum thing".....It's just too frustrating. I feel like I need to be a troll to really attract any attention. Some of you might be inclined to tell me to just go away if I dont' like it, and I understand that. I'd rather not, but those of you with that opinion just might be right.

If I were you, and I was looking to discuss PS actions, photo-retouching, etc., I'd take it to the Retouching forum, for example. Similar, if you were asking about printing.. go to the Printing forum. Posting things like the thread(s) you're referring to, albeit 'related' to the 300D since, perhaps, the pics were shot with one, they are rather 'off topic' for a Camera-specific forum. I dare say, beyond posting images for comment that are 300D specific, that posting gallery or pic links looking for feedback on the artistic nature of the pics is even on the fringe of being off-topic, as well. Seeking critques would best be down in the "Samples and Galleries" forum.

I don't mean to brush you off on this.. I'm not. I'm just suggesting that posts are best posted in the forums most intended to contain such posts. You will get far better responses, ON-TOPIC responses, by taking the posts to the most appropriate forum where the focus is more tuned to the topic being (hopefully) discussed.

Try the B&W post over on 'Retouching' and I'll garauntee a better audience is found for a productive discussion.

People respond to stuff they know about. Quite honestly alot of people ask if theres a menu option to make the Dreb shoot B&W like their point and shots.

People like to ask is (blank) a good lens or is (blank) better than (blank) lens

People like to post their first shots with the camera or (blank) lens

People like to ask about is X camera a better choice than Y camera

People like to post about how their "old" camera is better than their "new" camera

ETC ETC ETC, you read the post im sure, you know what im talking about.

Point being, A majority of this forum is "newbies" if you excuse the term and not a great % of people as intrested in photography as you are.

There have been some pretty long discussions about B&W conversion techniques and it has been intresting, for me at least. I personally use Capture One for this by the way.

Your post dont lack merit, they just lack wide appeal. I try talking to my girlfriend about lens sharpness, flare etc and she could care less. She just likes to take pictures. Thats how alot of people on these forums are.

Try posting perhaps in some of the other forums. 1D forum or the Pro DSLR forum is pretty good for "tech talk" as alot of those people are obivously a bit more serious and experienced as a good deal of them are using $4000-8000 bodies and/or shoot for a living.

They live photography and talk the talk, most of the people here have a life outside photography and just want to take picutres

But your B&W post is VERY specific, it's ONLY for people interested in B&W who HAVE Photoshop and WANT to do actions (whatever they are, not owning photoshop I'm only guessing)

Just with your subject you've limited the ammount of people who will open your post.

I'm not knocking the effort you've put in. But in public forums it can happen that your one shining/painstaking/bloodsweattears moment is lost in the general posts.

You put the effort in to learn about B&W then generously shared your knowledge. Be satisfied that you have done what a majority cannot be bothered with.

Thanks and Adulation are nice but just because you don't get them doesn't mean what you've done isn't worthwhile. I mean how many lurkers would have read your post but not responded even with a "thankyou" simply because the're shy.

Has been since late last year. Before that, it was much better. Seems all the trolling/flames over the Sony 828 changed the tone of the forum and it never recovered.

If you are are after a quality discussion or quality feedback, this is not the place to get it. I'm close to not bothering to come here anymore myself. Maybe these forums need some strict moderation to keep things on topic for a while.

Michael,

I think Big Bad's point about the breadth of appeal of the subject matter is probably right on. When combined with all the activity on this forum, it's very easy for even the most interesting of posts to get totally lost -- if there isn't a lot of response the post can get knocked to page three pretty quickly, where it won't get any play.

I've noticed that when I respond to a post which has gone unanswered for a while, that bump tends to generate a significant number of other responses. At some point it's just a numbers issue on a forum as active as this one is.

Of course folks are free to discuss anything they like in a forum, but for Photoshop issues you might want to try cross posting in the Retouching Forum. If I have questions about post processing I'll generally start there. Just a suggestion.

I agree.

I find it very hard to keep up with this forum, and am very much discouraged from posting. I don't mind, as such, having 6 pages of new messages every day.... but I do mind how much of that is wasted. Since the only way of keeping track of threads is to contribute to them (or bookmark) I lose track of much of the good stuff here. Most days I run out of time, and just leave the forum with several pages unread.

As a more advanced user, and one with little free time, I wish we had two Dreb forums. One for new users, people thinking of buying, and pet photos. The other for advanced techniques, photo critiques, and more in-depth discussion.

As I told a friend recently, I would hate to leave this forum, but attempting to contribute here just stresses me out.

For what it's worth, I think the subject title does more to generate interest than anything else. True for this forum, and just about every other forum I've ever been involved with.

When I post something on a forum (any forum) that I really want feedback on, I spend time trying to come up with a title that will catch attention.

My last thread entitled "This photo sucks" did the job well.... I first contemplated calling it "Cherries in the snow - need help", but it would have been ignored and I probably wouldn't have received all the great info/tips/thoughts that were left.
