Victim of Fraud ..OT

tcp1000 might be right in his/her line of thinking. I somehow ignored the fact that their first payment bounced - there must've been a reason for that, and there's still a chance it was a legitimate one. It's a tough call to make - you either don't do it and just hope you can intercept your camera on it's way (which will be very hard to do granted it's probably in Russia by now), or you take a chance and grab this last straw hoping you have an honest person on the other end. You can always close the account you give “him” once everything is said and done (regardless of the outcome) to avoid any future problems with it (forged checks, unauthorized access, etc.)

Michele I was hoping when I checked back to see good news. I am so sorry the camera is gone. You have a very understanding hubby. No one needs this stress especially with your mom being ill and not to mention your own problems. I know it can't make you feel any better but I am very sad for you.

Never Ship outside of the US and always specify that there will be a one day delay between payment and shipping... Make sure to note also that because Ebay doesn't handle the scam artists effectively you have to handle business this way!
I sold my 717 on Ebay, the money was deposited in my PayPal
account. Yesterday I transfered the money to my bank, then off I
went to the Post Office and shipped the camera to Russia (being a
nice person, I obliged the buyer who "paid" the shipping).

Well about two hours later I get an email from PayPal that the
funds were reversed because I was possibly a victim of fraud.
Today PayPal confirmed that it was fraud.

Many emails back and forth to the buyer who claimed it was a PayPal
screw up, finally she said she would do a wire transfer into my
bank !! I don't think so !! I was dumb beyond dumb to ship the
camera before it cleared my bank, but I thought "oh it is in PayPal
so it is OK".

I called the PostOffice and was able to stop it from being shipped
from JFK. So I am only out $41 for the original shipping and
insurance.

Lesson learned at the price of raw nerves and $41.

Always pay through them using a Credit Card...

They want you to use a Bank account so that you have no means of charging back on them!

I got taken by a guy for Photoshop 6 and all he provided was tracking number which UPS verified never shipped and PayPal was satisfied with their investigation and let him have the money!

Well, I charged the transaction back via my credit card provider and got the money back... Paypal then approached me telling me how good their complaint resolution is and that next time I should use that!

After all was said and done I replied to Paypal exactly what I thought of their stupid service and told them how I thought the were 2-bit sleezy conment!

but I'd make a donation if it would help. She has provided valuable information for all ebay users. And I don't even have a Sony. :)

Because Michele was willing to share this story, I've learned a
very valuable lesson.

I challenge the users of this forum, many good people, to step up
and send Michele a little bit of money to help her keep her 828.

Michele- if it is secure to do so, can you post your PayPal info so
that I can send you a donation? Otherwise you can email to me:
lorennerol(at)aol.com.

Best regards-

4 to 6 days for an electronic transfer from checking to paypal! What is this? The 70's?

I have a Bank One account. I deposit a check and they are so nice to make a percentage of funds immediately available. But sometimes it is 20% somethimes near 50%. Not sure why...

In your case if the PayPal status was no longer "pending" then they should not have reversed it. I would take a wire transfer to a cashiers check. Well maybe not. It might still get back with your account number. How about to a Travelers check?
I have a seperate account with a minimal balance for all our online dealings.

Bank One did call us one night and ask about a $5.75 charge made in a different state. I thought it was a con to get our banking info. After a few minutes we realized they meant $575.00! But no personal info was asked. Just denied the charge, they sent a letter for us to sign and it took about 12 days to see the cash back in our account.

Too bad we can not sell here. Guess that would work against sponsors. But with a % going to Phil maybe it could go towards a tiny bit more bandwith. heheheee

Well it does sound dodgy, I've just transferred all my PP based 'New Camera Kitty' into my real bank.

And there's me thinking that paypal was just another bank.

Thanks for the tip off.
Seen this site around, various reasons to avoid paypal are given.
Its been around for years, so if it was false info the lawyers
would have closed it down years ago.

Just feel lucky you stopped your camera in time.
it was my stupidity. I am a little PayPal shy right now. I just
wish there was a way they could verify the money before they put it
in your account. Kind of like a false sense of security.

Never Ship outside of the US and always specify that there will be

Ouch! Being someone 'ouside of the US', this attitude really cuts. There are plenty of countries that are prefectly reliable to sell to. I'd like to think that Australia, being my country of origin, is considered a reliable place.

Can't tell you how annoying it is, shopping on the internet, only to discover that some retailer does not ship anything outside the US.

The one day delay is prefectly fine. Hey, take 3 or 4 days before you ship!

It's unfortunate but the tracking and package recovery once it leaves the US tends to be less reliable in a lot of countries... Figuring out which countries is tough and it makes one very open to a scam!

I've had people tell me they wanted to buy my stuff (even though I specified no orders outside of the country) and they wanted to know if I could next day it to them! I was like yeah right, take a hike!

Not that it helps but ebay is the most fraud ridden item on the http://www .

PayPal somehow allowed my password out and some nice person tried to charge my PayPal accound for $2500. This was last spring. I was given 7 days to prevent PayPay from taking this from my checking account when my credit card company refused the transfer.

If I hadn't seen the e-mail, the money would have moved. I immediately closed PayPal. That worked for a while until I signed up for pbase and they ran the transaction through PayPal. Now I had an account again that I hadn't signed up for.

I can't close it because I won't validate it by sending my bank numbers and I won't do that again. Fortunately, it is frozen and no activity can take place because I won't validate. But they won't close it unless I do. Strange company.
Good luck Michele

Another way fraud takes place is when you sell something, they send a cashiers check. YOu put it in the bank and the bank accepts it and deposits it in your account. You think you are fine. You ship the article. The buyer then cancels the cashiers check and your bank reduces your checking account by that amount saying that the cashiers check did not clear. That may be 7-12 days after you deposited. YOu are out shipping, the item, and maybe some charges from your helpful (not) bank.
Trust no company or overseas buyer.

Paypal is not the only one that can yank money back. There was a scam a while back with fake cashiers checks (ok, I am sure there are many going on but there was one in particular involving Mac laptops on Ebay).

The thing was, the cashier check would clear the bank after a few days (ie. they would tell you the check cleared and your funds were available) and then several days later they would remove the funds when the check turned out to be counterfeit.

And apparently they have this right....

Michele this happened to several people last year who sold their D60s and recieved a bad payment through PayPal. If memory serves on person was like you and took the money out before PayPal could reverse. They did some research and found that since it was a PayPal error, they were not liable to return the funds to PayPal.

Remember PayPal is a bank. If they mess up it is their fault not your fault. They should have verified the funds before you were given the funds. If you pulled the money out I don't think you are obligated to return the money.

Ed
safe to have the wire transfer done into my mother's and my joint
account, but I decided against it.

I am now to afraid. Eating $700 is hard to swallow, but I know it
could get worse.

Thanks for all the words of support and kindness.

When it comes to eBay, I only do business with people with a very good feedback rating. They're usually very reliable, and don't want to mess up their reputation as a good eBayer by f* ing you over. You could put a warning in your auction description.

I'm from "overseas", i.e. Germany, and was asked to ship to US on some of my recent ebay auctions. Of course I did! Doesn't matter on which side of the pond you live....:-)

PayPal is not common here in EC - we do most money transfers from (very safe) bank accounts by using SWIFT codes (IBAN+BIC) at low cost. Once the money is transferred it can't be drawn back. No external person has access to my bank account (except the tax-office..;-(
So it was a good lesson learned about PP, I'm feeling with you. Asking too:

"Michele- if it is secure to do so, can you post your PayPal info so that I can send you a donation? Otherwise you can email to me:" [email protected]
