Just a curious scenario. Let's assume all your A-Mount gear stops working and Sony says A-mount is no longer being supported. You can't buy A-mount used either.

Which system would you "switch to" and why would you pick that system? What camera would you be coming from?

I really want to see everyone's thoughts as someone who has already moved from A-Mount and really misses it at times.

My A mount lenses still work well with LA-EA 3/4 adaptors as I transition to FE lenses.

I considered moving to Nikon but would face much the same issue as Nikon transitions to it's mirrorless system, not to mention that the higher end Nikon cameras are just to large physically compared to my A7ii, and certain MUCH larger than an A6xxx would be if I really wanted to reduce size.

Whichever system supports my lenses(including my zeiss 85 and 135mm) the best.

Right now, that's E-mount. In the future, it could be RF mount.

I have made the move to E-mount already a couple of years ago as I thought that all new developments would to towards E-mount (and I was a long time Minolta user so saying goodbye to, for example, my white 80-200/2.8 APO did hurt).

This survey is invalid mostly due to the fact the Sony A lenses are "best" suported by FE/E system cameras of its own. Unless ppl want to dump the lenses for nothing lol.

Assume a spherical cow.

Well I thought the 2nd sentence made it clear that if all your A-mount gear stopped working and you couldn't buy used what would you do. I want to know what system they would be interested in as an entirety. Ex: X brand cause of X feature.

Now obviously people would try to stick to Sony if they have lenses, but if they didn't the ball is in the air and you could decide on any system.

Also I have assumed a spherical cow. It is magnificent. Nice try though.

Assume a spherical cow . Yep... A more realistic scenario would be:

"Let's assume all your A-Mount gear stops working gets stolen and Sony says A-mount is no longer being supported. You can't buy A-mount used either."

So the choice is more realistic here - with no legacy system in my camera bag (stolen) and most A mount stuff rather used than new what would i buy to continue my hobby?

Honestly, no idea.maybe just an RX100VIII ?

As long as my A Mount gear is with me and working well, Sony FE would be the obvious choice if a body would need replacement. With five A Mount bodies all going strong around here not a short term thing to happen.

Cheers,
Ralf

I have chosen Olympus. The weight advantage is definitely there with the lenses and I don't need any more than around 24mp my A77 gives. Have seriously thought about getting a second hand Oly body to test the water already.

Sure you can build a compact system around Sony E mount including FF but FF is expensive and I am not convinced by the A6xxx form factor.

Years ago I was an Olympus film shooter (OM2 & OM4) so its partly nostalgia as well!

That said could I really justify ditching my 70-300G and my 500mm F8 mirror has no real equivalent elsewhere? I also have a Sigma 105 macro that would work on FF via an adaptor and a Sony 85mm F2.8.

The economics of re buying lenses may force me to go Sony FE though that said there are a couple of camera shops where I live and there is plenty of cheap Oly glass to buy so I could probably switch for not a great deal of money.

One thing that would draw me to any new system and mount is the one who comes out with a camera with GPS included. Such an important feature to me so if Oly brought out an EM1 III with the GPS of the EM1X I might be tempted to move before any official demise of A-mount.

Same goes for any mount really. If Canon brought out an EOS R series with IBIS and GPS I'd be tempted.

I know Sony offers GPS via the phone app but what a kludge.

Oh, an apocalyptic scenario. I love those!

I would 'switch to' Nikon 1 (which is not listed as one of your poll choices), because I already have a system built. Hopefully the same apocalypse doesn't strike Nikon 1 gear.
What camera would you be coming from?
Are you asking what A-mount camera(s) I own? A77 and A55.

Perhaps this would be the better way to word it. I felt like most people hold onto their gear for good reasons and was curious where people would transition to if they had to.

I agree that FE is the most obvious choice with lenses, but I've also seen people say that they hate E-mount ergonomics and would never switch.

The RX100Vii seems like a nice camera for all around usage.

The move would be to Sony mirrorless- no brainer there...

I mean if you think that's an apocalypse then I guess so?

Yes and thank you.

Its a fabulous camera and the AF is fantastic on that little beast. But it is definitely no replacement FE mount capability.

I posted RX100VIII which does not exist yet ... given the fact that my current gear should at least last until Sony releases the RX100VII successor ;-) and at that point in time I will be so old that light gear will very likely replace my current A Mount collection anyway :-(

Coming from A58 -> A65 -> A68 -> A77II

A5000 -> A6000 --> A7II

If A-mount lenses stopped working I would buy more EF lenses. If A-mount cameras stopped working I would buy more E-mount lenses.

I prefer A7II ergonomics to the A77II. Canon RF bodies would be more interesting with A-mount gone, especially once Samyang has their lineup filled out.

The RX100viii will probably be out in another year...will you be that instantly old? ;-)

I believe you still have time to purchase the A99m2 and really enjoy that collection of glass you have, all the more better.

But as Steve has requested, it is difficult for people to conceive instant A-mount/Sony disappearance from the marketplace.

Pure heresy!!

Samsung NX.

Dang already did that. Then NX broke back to Sony now this.

Sigma quattro maybe or Sigma FP if L mount had a swivel screen or they had a foveon in L mount.

Then either Leica CL or Fuji X. Still want NX back!

I guess forced to make a choice by the apocalyptic EMP that destroys all A-mount bodies (not that there wouldn't be other far more dire things to worry about at that point), I would have to go E/FE mount mount, mainly because it's very familiar and a lot of lens development is happening there. Of course in order to accomplish that the family will have to get used to eating dirt and living on the streets, but that's a small price to pay for GAS.

In the meantime I will patiently wait for Sony to decide it wants to take my money for a new fantasy top of the line APS-C A77 Mark III.
