Ricoh Says "The Next GR Will Come..."

I have worked in a corporation that talked like this. It is why I don't work for corporations any more.

It was usually code for, don't hold your breath. The projects were usually kept on life support, with minimal vague statements of support, until they were cancelled.

I'm not disagreeing with this, ... which ultimately means that the executive is lying. But on the other hand, I don't know how Japanese business work. Probably very different from western. From east they are very keen on saving their face, here in the west we just want to save our $.

"Speaking of smaller cameras, our readers really want a GR III – is this something you’re working on?

Good question.
Although we don’t know whether it will be called ‘GR III’ or not, the study for the development of the next GR is already ongoing. We cannot say when, and how exactly it will be, but the next GR will come someday."
Ok, how long before someone comes and says it still isn´t coming!?
Well, it still isn't. They're only researching the potential for development. Someday means they have no idea when it will come because they still don't even know when it will start. All this confirms is that they haven't cancelled the line, not that the next one is getting built.
You're actuality saying that the executive is lying. Read his last sentence again in above quote.
I'm saying he's being vague because there's no concrete details.
Also "potential" is a word you added, what he said was that the study has already started.
The study is of the potential. He didn't say they're developing the camera, he said they're studying for the development. This isn't school, the feasibility study will be for the very thing I said, the market potential with forecast sales performance and a present valuation method applied to expected cash flow. Nobody just builds a product with no consideration of what it will cost, where the components will come from, what the labor demands will be, or if it has any hopes of being profitable.
If what he say, "there will be a GR3", is true, then the decision is already made.
To me it just mean he is not allowed to say anything at all. Only that they still have plans with it.
They don't even have plans yet.
If you are working on something revolutionary, would you tell the world (and competition) about it?
No. If you aren't working on anything revolutionary, you wouldn't have anything to tell the world about, either. You are creating details that don't exist in the interview.
That was actually not about you or the interview, sorry that it was under your answer. It was a general comment that a company don't automatically need or want to tell the buyers about a product that doesn't exist.
If you are working on a potential flop, would you tell about it?
No. If you aren't working in anything specific yet, you also have nothing to tell about.
As long as the GR is the best option for their target, they do right. I would love to hear their plans, but also do understand their silence.
I'd love to hear their plans as well, but with their booking of a billion dollar write down, they are putting r&d on hold for several things until they review their strategic plan. Whatever plans they had have to reviewed and likely rewritten.

I wouldn't call it lying because he might not know the "truth" neither. Actually no one might know it. It's very much possible that there are plans and even prototypes and more and one morning they get a call and the product is killed or given a go ahead. Not much different than a government bureaucracy.

Key word is......

" Someday"

Probably not for another 12 months

At least they have not abandoned the GR.

That's good news

Just don't be in any kind of a rush to get one.

Maybe this time next year...We can start some rumors...lol

Well, he didn't say that exactly. Since Ricoh has an imaging division, there have to be plans for that division. Once they stop having any plans at any stages, they would naturally shut it down. They plan on making a camera, but they don't know when, what it will be called, and they can't nail down the specs until they have a timing and pricing target to gauge against the market.

Will it be a fixed prime lens apsc camera with a cfa? Monochrome? FF or M43? Zoom lens? Fast lens? Viewfinder? Wifi? Bluetooth? Touch-screen? Articulating screen? Flash? ILC? interchangeable lens & sensor combos attempted again? BSI? Stacked sensor? Craziness like a curved or organic sensor? I think there's some easily eliminated options, but there are still a plethora of details to intermix. This is the brand with one aging camera that came out with the theta as the only other "Ricoh" option new on shelves, so who knows.

3 years now. They know exactly what to do with the GR. All they need is green light and resources. They may also need time if they are waiting for technology. Heck, they may even already be developing, why should they tell you and me.

What's the next GR? They've had the GR1, 1v, 21, D, DII, GXR, GR, GRII. Is it going to be an iterative change to the GRII, or something very different? You don't know, yet you call for a GRIII rather than something new for the design , features, and naming convention. What's your insider information? Because the GRII has precious little different from the GR, so you must expect more of the same to be so certain that it is a GRIII and nothing else. I can sadly only claim to not have any details, so cannot presume anything about the name, specs, or release date.
Since Ricoh has an imaging division, there have to be plans for that division. Once they stop having any plans at any stages, they would naturally shut it down. What do they know to do, exactly? Again you hint at the insider info that one MUST have to make such claims. At least it is good to know that at every level of management Ricoh knows EXACTLY what they want to and will do. Refreshing in a world where every other multinational tries to remain as flexible and adaptive as possible to respond to changing conditions in technology, global economic conditions, trade structures, competitive set, and consumer preferences. Nice to know there are still people who make decisions and don't care about how the world around them impacts that. Though I suspect their shareholders won't be any happier about it.

Enjoy your GR and GR II.

There will not be a GR III for a long time, if ever.

I don't see any way to interpret the comments as anything remotely positive in the direction of an updated model.

But here's the good news: The GR II is STILL a very good camera with nothing really better in such a small size. That said, I've been messing around with a x100f and thinking I may get one sometime soon.

I still can´t fathom that people read into this as Ricoh saying there isn´t going to be a new GR type camera in the future. They did not say... ¨There will never be a new GR¨

It's fairly unlikely that there will be a GR III.

I'm sorry. I speak corporate. As much as I like the niche the GR fills, cameras from Fuji, Sony and others have swept up much of what's left of the small-camera market.

Sales are way down for this sort of camera and I can't see Ricoh investing in an update. I could be wrong and I'll be happy if I am...but I doubt it.

I believe the GR line to be dead. But my GR II is alive and well...serving happily along side my Nikon D850 and other cameras...

Because we are way beyond the normal refresh timeline and the Ricoh representative said it may not even be called the GR III. Sure, it may be the next next GR line - GRD then GR then ???. But what would that even mean?

I'll believe it when I see it. Till then, I'll just take pictures and not fret over it. There are so many other cameras out there to choose from, that if the GR form factor ends its run, so be it. Nothing is permanent.

Thankfully someone with some sense. Thank you John.

Mr Takashi said its coming. Its pathetic Fail logic from others wanting to read some other nonsense into the statement, it can't be read any other way. Obviously some are offended that they are wrong about it never coming.

here again for those that seem to be incapable of reading.

"Good question. Although we don’t know whether it will be called ‘GR III’ or not, the study for the development of the next GR is already ongoing. We cannot say when, and how exactly it will be, but the next GR will come someday."

If we have an iota of empathy for the Ricoh managers we would realize from their point of view that they NEED to say little about it. They would be very concerned about what they say as their competitors are listening. Fuji even have indicated the likely of a X70 replacement. If you were around for the release of the GR you'd recall that Nikon beat them to the market with a compact APSC. (which I nearly bought) and no doubt the Nikon canabalised sales that they needed. Ricoh would not want competitors to know what they are working on and have a repeat of history. It needs to remain secret.

"the study for the development of the next GR is already ongoing"

Already - Already ongoing. It being developed !!!!!, There is no ambiguity here, at best an interesting choice of words in translation,,, but fair go the man's native language is no doubt Japanese not English.

"we don’t know whether it will be called ‘GR III’ or not"

Yeah, nice clue, that adds weight to it being called GRE as in the rumor.

He says it's coming "someday." That's far off. You want a clue? The current GR II is about done. If the GR III (or whatever it's to be called) was anywhere NEAR the horizon, he'd drop a hint. Why? Because Ricoh would want you to WAIT and not get invested in a Fuji or Panasonic system.

The optics of his comments are pretty clear. They're doing a "study" for the development. That means there's NO CAMERA. They don't know what it is, which is why they're studying the market to see what they could possibly sell.

Trust me, the GRIII is FAR FAR away. Ricoh has nothing for you or he'd be laying down hints to preserve market share. If it was anywhere close to being real, he'd say something like "I think we'll have something really exciting coming to market for GR fans." That's how these guys hold onto share in between market for niche products.

I know you folks are desperate for a new GR, but don't hold your breath.

This will hold me for now...

You are being disingenuous, you have taken the word study out on its own and hence out of context.

The line is --

"the study for the development of the next GR is already ongoing"

this means, MEANS its already being developed, anything else is an attempt at manipulation of the statement and that fails logic. Added to its no doubt a loose translation. The meaning remains. Occam's razor stands.

No, I don't trust you. Reason is, your failed logic. Added to, your definition of far away (I assume in time) likely is not mine. There are users even here still using a Ricoh R4, old cameras still take photos.

Me, I don't care when it comes, I'm not desperate for anything, you need to stop trying to manipulate peoples thinking.

LOL! Uh, no. Pay attention in English class next time. ;-)

"The STUDY FOR the development" clearly states that development has not begun as they are STUDYING for it. First comes the STUDY, then they proceed with development.

As someone with family working in the camera industry, allow me to explain it to you. Prior to designing a camera, studies are conducted for product viability, execution and marketing. That's what "study for development" means in the industry. It's a common term and it has a meaning.

I know you WANT it to mean they're screwing prototypes together, but that's obviously not the case. Nor does it mean they even chose a sensor or VF technology. It's a VERY early stage, which is why he's being so vague and says "someday."

I'm sorry, but none of this sounds promising in the least. Nikon has MANY studies for development and only a fraction actually come to market. There's very little encouraging news for GR owners.

No, I don't trust you. Reason is, your failed logic. Added to, your definition of far away (I assume in time) likely is not mine. There are users even here still using a Ricoh R4, old cameras still take photos.
That's fine. You can use all of the old cameras you want. I'm a working professional, not a hobbyist. If Ricoh was committed to the evolution and maintenance of the GR line, they'd have released an update or news of an update so not to bleed market share. It's business 101, but you just can't accept it for some reason.

Me, I don't care when it comes, I'm not desperate for anything, you need to stop trying to manipulate peoples thinking.
LOL, you sound pretty desperate! And now I'm manipulating peoples thinking??? Seriously? I don't think anyone here got excited when they read those comments. Obviously there's nothing new coming anytime soon. That's why the fellow said "someday" rather than "soon." See how that works?

My apologies to anyone who had their fragile thoughts warped by my ability to comprehend a sentence. ;-)

My apologies to anyone who had their fragile thoughts warped by my ability to comprehend a sentence. ;-)

I got excited and I am here. So ergo you are wrong again. Still can't see why you are even on this board ?

Enjoy your GR and GR II.

There will not be a GR III for a long time, if ever.

I don't see any way to interpret the comments as anything remotely positive in the direction of an updated model.

Rob
I do not believe it is dead from what was said or not said in that interview. I don't think you can read that into it. But I think we may have to wait longer than September before we see a new GR.
