OK, we heard again and again how the E-PL9 is targeting women in particular regions, and they are not exactly enthusiasts. Lets look at some facts:

8d852bf4bf7f4245aa4a594ec3de3245.jpg

Fuji A5 +15-45mm kit -------Olympus E-PL9 + 14-42mm kit ------Olympus E-PL9+12-32mm

----- -----------------£549 ---------------------------------- £649 ----------------------------------- £895----

------- ---------424g----------------------------------- 493g ----------------------------------- 450g ---

The cameras have identical sizes (Fuji is 1mm thicker), but lighter. As for fashion or beauty, check for yourself. The colours of the camera skins are subjective; so are their JPEG colours (both are very good).

As for differences in phototaking capabilities, there are a couple of clear advantages for the EPL9:

The E-PL9 has 4K/30p but just FHD/30p. The A5 only has 4k/15p, but it has FHD/60p.

The E-PL9 has IBIS. The A5 does not have IBIS, but its kit lens has OIS.

My guess is that the typical woman buyer won't care too much about 4K or spending more for those 4K requirements (SD card, processing or editing power, software, time and effort for downsizing to HD, file transfer times..) I also think most such buyers will just use the kit OIS lens, which makes IBIS not really such an advantage. Other minor advantages like a slightly faster flash sync speed or slightly higher fps would be of even less significance to such buyers.

In all other areas, controls, performance, IQ and features that are significant, the Fuji is better or much better, e.g. PDAF+CDAF, 24MP, APSC sensor, dials, ...

I therefore think that, even for the target female buyers, the E-PL9 would be a tough sell, unless we can assume they are ready to spend big to get the E-PL9 + 12-32mm lens, but then wouldn't something like a RX100 III or V, with an EVF be even better?

Sorry that there's a mistake. The E-PL9 is actually kitted with the smaller 14-42mm EZ lens, not the one shown in the first post. Here's is the corrected comparison photo.

----- ----- ----------£549 ---------------------------------- £649 ----------------------------------- £895----

------- ---------424g----------------------------------- 471g ----------------------------------- 450g ---

Note that this thinner lens is much smaller, and lighter (but still heavier as a whole with camera then the Fuji A5), and it is well known for very average performance.

I might wonder why women form any part of the world would wish to have a camera tool that was any different from a man with a similar level of interest in photography.

Maybe the women have figured out how to incorporate some nice photography into social events that don’t involve football, beer and nachos. 😊

I was led by previous posts to believe that they, or the ones being targeted, are not exactly on the same level in terms of interest, as men, or that other things like camera style, shape or colour of the faux skin maters more than phototaking features and performance. My own experience says that they are either smartphone or travel zoom users and not very keen in all the photography details (the majority), or, they tote big camera lenses (DSLRs) that their husband bought for the family, or, they are as or more serious as the average male hobbyists with serious FF DSLRS. I can't remember any women carrying such in-between cameras, i.e. serious compacts that cost so much as the e-PL9 or x-t20 etc and yet not exactly so good in IQ or in value as the FF.

Olympus E-PL9 - clearly less thick with the 12-42mm EZ lens.

Fuji A3 - more dials and also microphone input
Fuji A3 - more dials and also microphone input

We can again speculate whether the targeted buyers care about the mediocre Olympus 14-42mm EZ lens or the value of the microphone input

I just wish Fuji had or would release a pancake zoom, one that is even smaller or flatter than this 15-45mm. how about 18-24mm?

Or maybe the Pen is a nice blend of both quality image making (my PL7 produced some stunning images that my iPhone could not match), and fashion/style that is also important to them. Not all cameras need be black chunks.

Good on you privileged old, white, male showing your misogyny as well as racism. Have you ever considered the other gendes inclusion perhaps being targeted with this program?

Does every camera have to be big, masculine and phallic?

Maybe, but it would be up to those buyers to judge fashion/style, not me. I myself do not see much difference between these two new cameras in fashion/style, especially when compared to all the other features, performance, and price differences.

I should point out (read my previous messages here, and also on the other 2 threads about the E-PL9), that I do not hold the same msogyny or racist views that you seem to detect. I actually said in the others posts I disagree with others' apparent suggestion that those targeted Asian ladies are not so cluey, and I said that all those I know have brains, and that they would look at more than fashion. ... Check the messages I wrote out. I will take what you said here as a joke, but be careful. It's not nice as there are many female members here, and many I respect.

Yet you make note of the Fuji having a mic input. I cannot imagine a nice female attending a garden party in a fashionable frock, toting a microphone. Maybe us men like to have big honking gear with a port to plug in a beer cooler. And.....maybe we’re just men.

Not impossible, like in a school when her child sings or plays piano? Besides, the husband may have to carry the mike and tripod. :-(

...nice little rant you had there. How about you write Olympus a letter, then?

The Olympus PEN E-PL9 features technology that lets you easily capture artistic photos, and has sophisticated exterior design that suits your stylish ensemble. You can easily import images taken with the E-PL9 to your smartphone for quick, easy sharing on social media.

Bonus question: see if you can find any men on that Olympus page or any women that aren't Asian or European.

Still, it was good of you to attack the OP in the personal manner that you did, right?

If only he knew, how funny I thought it was as I read his message, because he obviously had made some assumptions based on my member name "Sergey Borachev", a nom-de-plume which I assure you is not an indicator at all of my race, ethnicity, or skin colour, drinking habit or views regarding the sexes etc. In fact, it would be a tiny bit racist wouldn't it to assume someone is white (when I can tell you I am not Caucasian) and that necessarily means certain traits? and I don't even know what to call the use of crude innuendo for no reason?

The irony is pretty funny, isn't it? Then again, a bird like me wouldn't really know. ;-)

Your comment perked my curiosity, so I just watched the Fiji A5 promo. Wow, just like the Olympus promo......all female and chic. Not a mention about sensor size, frames per second, or other tech. specs.

So, it would appear, at least with these two camera models both Fuji and Olympus are interested in a market segment that they feel should be catered to. Good on them. This is a segment that neither Canon or Nikon (not sure about Sony) have much or anything to offer.

Take care, maybe OzRay is a nom de plume and she's a woman? Who knows for sure... ;-)

my wife said she'd never use such a camera, she prefers a bit more girth....in a lens

Don't you just love marketeers ?

That Fuji camera looks great though - it's even got twin dials!
