Are there no decent affordable m4/3 standard zooms?

Refurbished 12-40 f/2.8s just showed up on GetOlympus for $679 (plus a ridiculous amount in taxes) so I picked one up. Paid more than what I wanted but I didn't want to play the waiting game to see if I could get it $50-100 cheaper.

In the end I saved about $180. Still debating if I should cancel and just pay that extra $180 for a new one...
Damn. They raised the price to even higher than it was before. Last time it was $500 after being $640 for the longest time.

First, I had the Oly 14-42 II came with my E-PL3. Super lens. Yes, some primes could beat it, but not by a lot.

I currently have the Panny 12-32 which I use with my GX7 (mainly). Now -- the dirty little secret no-one talks about much, this lens is subject to shutter shock with mechanical shutters in the 1/60-1/320 range. Not always and not at every focal length (in my experience) but in some situations, the difference between mechanical shutter and electronic shutter (which cannot cause shutter shot) is chalk and cheese.

Check that with the camera on a tripod.

Shutter shock could be a problem with the Oly 4-42 II lens as well.

Having come up bad on both these lenses, I would suggest you need to look at shutter shock, your camera (is it working right?), and repair/replacement of the lens.

Having said that, I have seen good reports of the Panasonic 14-42 II (not the original, never the original!) which put it in the stellar category. The Panasonic 12-60 (not the Panasonic Leica one) also seems very good, judging by posts here.

They do that all the time for some refurbs, it goes up and down without any rhyme or reason. I've seen the 12mm up for $480, 540, and $600 something. Might have to do with stock on hand or something...

It's a great lens. Get it on your camera and be happy.

:-D

There's no such thing.

Seriously though, the difference in image quality between the Olympus 40-150 f/4-5.6 R and the Oly14-42 / Panasonic 12-32 is night and day.

DG, if that's what you are seeing, there is something very wrong somewhere!

I have all sorts of lenses from the humble 14-42 EZ, 12-50 macro, to 14-54 MkII and 12-100. All do a creditable job ...

Again, if you don't mind gray market, you can get a new one for $100 less from overseas.

You can buy a used 12-40mm in excellent like-new condition for $500 or so off Ebay. Buy from a seller with good feedback and you'll have no issues.

Take three shots, all the same, open aperture between the three lenses at 40, 40 and (no choice) 32mm and post them.

The latest kit lenses tend to be pretty good. if yours was unusable it must have been defective and should be sent in for replacement or warranty repair.
I totally agree. At F4.0, you are not going to be able to tell the difference between the standard Olympus kit lens and the 12-40.

Maybe if you pixel peek you will find some corner and edge differences, but nothing significant.
In other words, you can tell the difference.

Of course, most kit lenses can only get to f4 in a small part of their range.

No one has mentioned the original Panasonic g 14-45. You can buy them used for $150.

IMO&E, these two lenses are similar in performance.

They form part of my various carry around kits, along with my 12-50 and E-M1 MkI and MkII bodies. I do not use multiple bodies, rather that I choose one or the other depending. Same deal with lenses.

Here are a couple taken with my 14-42 EZ pancake zoom. I like this lens for its tiny size and weight (93 gms ... ). Turns either of my mFTs bodies into an oversized P&S ;-) .

Neither lens is a direct competitor with some of my other lenses (FTs 14-54 MkII, 7-14 11-22, f/2 50 macro, 50-200 MkI; mFTs 12-100), however they do a good enough journeyman job IMO.

I got tired of waiting for a sale and picked up one for $640. I'm glad I did. I have a feeling a sale is coming this weekend.

New International version on Amazon for $668.60.

The 14-42 f/3.5-5.6 II R that came with my camera was horrible. So bad I would call it unusable. I recently picked up a Panasonic 12-32 f/3.5-5.6 because I had read a lot of good things about it. While clearly better than the Olympus 14-42, it's still a very soft and unimpressive lens. Before you think I am being overly critical, you should know that I am very happy with the Oly 40-150 f/4-5.6 R I picked up new, with warranty, for $100.

Why can't I find a standard m4/3 zoom equal to the $100 Oly 40-150 f/4-5.6 R in the $600 range?
My 14-42 IIR is decent for the price. At long focal lengths, its needs to be stopped down to f8 or f9 to get decent. But it's pretty decent when stopped down. That's all you can ask for in lens that's only an extra $100 with the camera, sometimes only an extra $50. It's not reasonable to expect that lens to be bitingly sharp at its widest f-stop.

The 12-40 PRO is actually a good value relative to the cost of buying a bunch of primes. I don't own it, but everything I've read about it is pretty good.

You are right, there's nothing in between worth buying. The 12-50, for example, was a real stinker of a lens.

The 14-42 EZ lens, it's my understanding that has the same optics as the 14-42 IIR, it's just smushed into a smaller package.

Detailed comparison here:

Quite different diaphragm and optics.

Have you ever owned or used the 12-50 macro? I own one ... I disagree with your statement.

Yes... Way too many pixel peep their perfect images for lens faults and are in a search for a noise that isn't visible and blame sensor when it doesn't capture sun and the deepest shadow equally.

Problem is that people don't do real world photographs and instead keep their images on computer screens and doesn't even rescale them correctly for that purpose.

I just 10min ago bought a 12-50mm just for fun to see "how bad it is". I think that it will be excellent performer if not getting clearly faulty sample.
