Windows Update Glitch

Fun.

I'm waiting for the responses from Microsoft apologists.

Heck, they could probably install key loggers that monitor everything you do and send that data back to servers under Microsoft control (to help improve your Windows experience of course), and Microsoft proponents would be OK with it.

Oh wait... my bad... perhaps I'm only describing Windows 10 (or perhaps the "telemetry" related updates that Microsoft has been rolling out to Windows 7 and 8.x, too).

In any event, don't worry. After all, it must be OK to let companies like Microsoft have anything they want. Otherwise, we'd be seeing a revolt against their policies.

Oh wait.. my bad... we're already seeing a lot of users that are against that kind of thing, as for some reason, they want to protect their rights to Privacy under the U.S. Constitution.

Another day, another tiresome J Cockfield anti-Microsoft 'bashing/flaming/trolling' rant (massive yawn).

You should just stick to your Linux Jim (and shut-up).

I guess the significance of the phrase

"There's no evidence that Redmond's goof caused anyone any real harm in this case" got lost in all the excitement.

Using this minor glitch as an pretext for an irrelevant rant seems over the top to say the least.

Windows 7 update glitch, that's all folks, now move along.

Ah but, you could just be a Government/Microsoft/CIA** agent saying that, just attempting to 'cover up'.

Remember, 'they are all out to get us' (or maybe just JC, et all). ;-)

[**P.S. 'In no particular order' and no doubt all in cahoots.]

I saw this one for myself when I updated my Win7 VM earlier. I said this one doesn't pass the smell test so decided not to install it. lol

Let's just hope M$ is telling the truth. Can you imagine if hackers figured out a way to infiltrate Windows updates? lol

Below's the same story from Ars Technica. :)

Bashing: Deliberately and repeatedly bashing the same brand, product orcompany. If you have a complaint or comment to make, make it once and make sure you have facts to support it.

In this case it is Microsoft, not Windows.

Yes, sorry Jim. I decided that privacy in life without Ms is just too hard & decided to submit.

I have recognized that Ms is the next profit...(sorry, bad spelling I meant prophet)

The mindless compliants such as guid-so-inept, Austi-nong, Mark-not-my-Hwords, star-not-star & Pootsy-Murky know best. I want to join the Ms cult to be like them.

So last night, I emailed Ms that anytime from now.....tonight is good, they are welcome to come to my home & help themselves to my filing cabinet & take/copy anything they find useful.

I also added they would be welcome to stay for dinner & have unrestricted access to my wife for any needs deemed necessary by their Guru execs.

Ms replied today to thank me. They went on to say - We already have everything from your files. We have also already scre*ed not just your wife, but also you, your parents, your grandparents & in fact, your whole family.

They did not apologize for not letting me know. They did however offer to publish the videos in their next few auto updates.

Thank you Ms.......I'm so glad I'm now part of the overall good of the planet :-D

Rather puerile - and only serves to shine a dim light on your own character.

Well that's remarkably generous of you - but probably wasn't strictly necessary.
Ms replied today to thank me.
Me thinks, maybe they didn't too? ;-)

Well, ironically (whilst you obviously didn't mean it) there actually is one heck of a lot of truth in the later.

Like it or not, the likes of Bill Gates, MS, Windows (and others, similar) have actually changed the World in so many incredibly beneficial ways, almost unimaginable 20~30 years ago - ways in which so many people now take much for granted.

And I say that, while not being any sort of 'mindless compliant/fanboy' (as you might want to believe).

Cool it with the Microsoft bashing. It doesn't add anything to the discourse, and frankly, you're just being snarky. I'm not asking you to sing romantic sonatas under Bill Gates' balcony, but we get it - you don't like Windows, and you prefer Linux. Fantastic. This anti-Windows contingent has expressed their views - be it bashing, expressing dislike, or encouraging users to try Linux in a VM - more than once across numerous threads. But, honestly, give it a rest. It's tired.

And for the folks being overly sensitive about Windows bashing. Calm down. Grown adults arguing about computers is just silly. It's like teenagers arguing over whether Apple or Android is better. Writing sarcastic, intentionally incendiary remarks in response is just immature.

Ultimately, neither side is convincing the other. And both sides' bickering is wholly uninviting for others to participate int his forum. Just.Stop.Please. You know who you (plural) are.

I know there's a ton of freedom of expression on forums. One of the great things about the Internet. But I'm happy to start banning people if this continues. I don't care how long you've been a contributor or how many posts you have to your name. Seniority doesn't grant anyone leniency under the forum rules.

Lastly...folks...when posting, bear in mind the purpose of the PC Talk forum: "Welcome to the PC Talk Forum, the place to discuss PC photography software and applications." "Discuss," in this case, implies civility and learning, not bashing, immaturity, and a slinging insults.

Thanks,

rhit

I don't think that this is Ms bashing. It's a legitimate post about a published report of a glitch in a Ms update. OT imo.

Criticism of this glitch is reasonable given the size & maturity of this experienced company which is relied upon by probably the largest client base that has ever existed on this planet.

Anyway, let's not get too serious about some fun lampooning & joking at Ms's expense. Life's enjoyment & freedom of expression is worth much more than a bunch of OS hard liners who take themselves too seriously & have too little a sense of humor.

Thanks for your sensible moderation.

Rhit - you're confusing Malch with Jim. Malch just noted the event occurred. Jim raised the ante by taunting the Windows advocates. And they happily took the bait.

And you're wrong - as noted - this story has merit in this forum. So long as MS's policy around Windows 10 is mandatory patching, their screwups are quite germane. People are constantly asking here if they should update to 10 and this is a key reason why they should not

It doesn't matter that this update is harmless- it points to a complete lack of release control or quality engineering. It's on top of their recent history of releases tracking patchings and win10 installers as "important updates" with a generic description.

I suggest you read the second post, maybe you missed it?
