So much gear churn for what? So you can shoot the same subjects in the same light? Pictures will be 98% the same on any quality camera + lens combo. Anyone with any modicum of skill knows that. Switch or don't, but your pictures likely won't be any better.

Yes the quality of images will remain the same… but the D700 has no video recording functionality and that's something that is being requested more and more. Also I do need a secondary body in hectic shooting scenarios - but I can't get myself to invest in 36 MP of a D800, or a D600 body (not the right access to functionality), or a D4 body (too large).

A D800 body with the choice of various sensors would be perfect.

I do agree that my original rant was and remains useless. But I don't think that having a choice of sensor with the body of choice is OTT. After all Sony did it with the Alpha7… (this is not about mirrors)

Fine… the apple comparision was silly.

Here's another one: Sony Alpha 7. They seem to get what I was suggesting they have a Sony 7 with 36 MP one with 24 MP and one more (I don't remember how many MP).

If Sony can, why can't Nikon. What if you can't work with huge clunky 36 MP sized images but do need the body of a D800?

That's my main concern really.

I don't think Canon is doing it 100% right either. They should take a peak at Sony on that matter too… But compared to 36 MP overkill, I can live with a 24 MP 5D
The rumored D800s is said to have sRAW for smaller files.

A least I'm getting some Fanny without the GAS you're having … look at that gear list my friend!
GAS? Are you serious? I'm a working (ok, semi-retired) photographer.

Even befoe the OP can jump ship, shareholders are fleeing the Nikon world (and pulling their kids from college), hoping to sell their investments before the OP can dump his, which I'm sure are considerable. I'm checking my mutual funds now to make sure that I am not affected by this looming corporate demise. I just heard that both the websites of the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times are down....oh, the humanity....

This will make Enron look like the sinking of a rowboat!

was the D700 replacement. I seriously dont' understand why so many have trouble understanding this. The D700 was never really meant to be a sports camera on the cheap. It was meant to be a more affordable general purpose FX camera to compete with the original 5D and did so extremely well. Unfortunately Canon came out with the 5D II that had video and most importantly 21 mp which despite being a lesser camera in almost every other way, was enough to make the 5DII become the standard for pro portrait, wedding, event, ect photography. Even with it's much worse AF. So when Nikon updated the D700 they gave people Everything the D700 had over the 5DII plus the high resolution sensor and video that made the 5DII so successful.

Another dude more focused on gear than photography.

I just spent the last hour looking at pictures I took with my old D40. They look great. I'm not sure how a roadmap would help your pictures.

what nonsense, to attack a brand because it does not have a roadmap and is not as cheap as in the special offer 2 years ago.

Manufactures love it when someone dumps what they're currently using and buys all new gear. Go for whatever will significantly improve your photography and make you happy in the short-term.

Cheers,

4. Needless to say that the D600 had major quality issues and the body cripples functionality.
What's crippled about it, exactly?
5. And D300 users are waiting for an upgrade since 2005 (?) which really isn't exactly providing me with a lot of trust either.

I don't understand why Nikon or Canon cannot do it like Apple.
Overpriced, underperforming equipment designed for mass appeal at the cost of form over function? Why would you want that?
Apple gives you three bodies as well: the Air, the Pro and the normal Book. Depending on your needs you choose how much space and RAM you want and then you get a laptop that suits your needs…

Why not have a D4, D800, D600 (and the same in the DX and Mirrorless section) and then you can choose wether you want:

- a 36 MP sensor,
- a 24 MP sensor or
- a 16 MP sensor
With their various advantages and disadvantages? I personally would probably go for a 16 MP D800, and if I needed a more high res camera I can always get a second body …
I'm very confused. Currently Nikon offers exactly that. You can get a 16MP D4/D4s, a 24MP D600/D610, or a 36MP D800/soon-to-be D810. Or are you looking for all those sensors to be interchangeable between bodies? If so,... is there another company doing that in the camera world?
TL;DR: Nikon has been a disappointment in the past 3 years, with unclear roadmaps, unaddressed needs and quality issues. If they can't address these issues by Photokina .. I'm switching to more reliable partners.
A qualifier might be needed. Something like 'To me, Nikon has...' For my needs, Nikon has hit a homerun and offered the best image quality on the planet. All they need is a flash with built in radio triggering and they will be perfect.

I'm caught between the need of a camera with video functionality (due to client requests) and thinking 36 MP is overkill and not wanting to invest in further lenses into a system that expensive and inflexible.

I do also agree that, in the end, my post was a pointless rant. But it sure felt good.
I hope that last sentence will save you from flak and flame.

Happy for you that you like Apple.

The problem I have with Apple is that they don't make computers like Bianchi makes bikes.I can buy from Bianchi a huge amount of combination having a choice of frames, wheels, gears, shifters, pedals, saddles and even different colours from the factory "celeste" .So why can't Apple sell computers like Bianchi sells bikes ?
Ah, but that celeste ... so beautiful, so iconic, so Pantani.

I'm perfectly happy with my used Nikon D 300s. I was glad that I did not reward Nikon for their decisions by buying from Keh. Hopefully, it will last another 5 years or so until some camera is developed that is so good that it blows all the others away.

Good to see that the line-up makes a lot of sense now...

One for the wish-list: a mirrorless F-mount camera similar to the Fuji...

I'm sure I wasn't the only one having this issue - and I'm glad I was one who raised it over and over again... a drop in the ocean perhaps - but

The D750 ... that's what this post is about. It's what was missing. So, not jumping ship.

Happy now ... because now I can keep my line-up focused and not fall into a GAS trapeven though I am a working photographer
