"The Sony A7S is the first camera to really beat the Canon 5D Mark III on pretty much every level for both stills and video, especially the latter. The A7R did not have the video quality to topple Canon. The A7S not only topples Canon, it destroys their claim to video quality on DSLRs. Canon’s dated consumer and semi-pro DSLRs are now in serious disarray for video and in some ways stills too (dynamic range and low light for instance)."

I love Sony cameras, had an A77 that was painful to part with but at only 12mp the A7S is a dark light specialist and does not compete with the 5D3 at resolving detail in 'normal' lighting conditions.

Also Sony's current lens range is no match for Canon's and the handling of the A7 series is a bit Marmite.

Just my tuppence worth...

A real dog bites man story if ever I heard one. Two years should bring significant technical advances these days so I don't see anything remarkable about this.

You put a lot of stock in the opinions of this guy. Others may not be so inclined.

Sorry that you don't know who is Andrew Reid. Better start Googling so you won't look so naive next time.

dannyb?

So my 70-200mm ISL II will work just fine then. The one with no aperture ring (as is the case with most EF lenses)?
yes as long as you buy an electronic adapter ($100 - $400). AF will be very slow but aperture an IS will work.
As I say I am a bit of a Sony fan but to say the A7S beats the 5D3 in every department is an overstatement.
It might apply to a particular use case that does not need big prints or tracking AF. But I'd agree that its overstating it for many other uses.

I know very well who he is. My only point is that others might not share your sense of awe.

Perhaps you should not jump to incorrect conclusions so you don't end up looking like .... well, you.

Canon’s dated consumer and semi-pro DSLRs are now in serious disarray for video
So let me get this straight. Sony finally comes out with a camera that bests the 5D3 and now Canon is in disarray. ROFL.

Perhaps let's wait for Canon's next DSLR...as I don't think they've released anything newer than the 70D. Keep in mind, the 5D3 is from the beginning of 2012.

Again, ROFL

A Canon 5DIII outclasses any mirrorless for any kind of sports/action. Not to mention lens selection.

First time I have seen such a biased fanboyish review.

100% focused on video and no mention of AF which I expect it to be destroyed by 5D3.

with exactly 1 (one) somewhat fast native lens, i'd call this A7x series a very niche product. at a very high price. i'd use it as a second camera for the street. other than that, i'd want a pro-sumer dslr.

Thought not.

That's a video review by a video review site. According to Canon, less than 10% of purchasers use the camera to take videos.

The article was not talking about the kind of photography but comparing image and video departments. A7 series can use any brand of lens including Canon and Nikon so technically, it has more lens selection.
