Sony DSC-RX1/R (King of the Cyber-Shots) Picture Thread:

Hi David,

I agree with 90% of what you say.

I do feel that Sony is just testing the water with these 2 items, and will then come up with something more at the level (maybe a 3rd item) of what you sescribe.

Lastly I feel these items were not aimed at a RAW shooter, just people that can take fun and decent shots and upload them to therir facebook etc on the spot.

That would be very cool :-)

yeah i hear you, I am SURE they were aimed at the fun market. However, typically Sony, they focused on the engineering and not the UI.

I do think the basic camphones do the job well enough for the "fun" aspect. Heck, even Im taking the odd snap now with my Note 3 to save the bother of using the camera (something i never used to do , but I have "always on" cell internet now); & that's despite having the RX100ii where the wifi works pretty well. The problem is the interface - ie the Playmemories app is really clunky, you can either be in photography mode or transfer mode; its just not a nice experience. The former is basic, and features are very lacking (worse than a phonecam) and the latter is inadequate with lack of options and ways of selecting photos for transfer, resolutions, where they find themselves on the phone, etc.

My point is, if the same playmemories interface is something (the only interface available) you have to struggle with whilst using cameras in the QX range (which I think it is) , then no wonder it did not sell. The best thing about PM is that it works, thats about it. Compare this to the slick camphone interfaces with Android and such, with instant options to share each image with any combination of online repositories or communication platforms and you have a winner for the masses.

IF Sony can redevelop the platform and UI significantly; eg, have AUTOMATIC transfer of images to your desired online comms or storages and radically redesign and enhance most areas of the interface THEN they'd have winners on their hands.

Couple this with high grade optics and sensors, RAW option and I'd be tempted myself.

David,

That now makes 100% sence and I am in full agreeance.

Yep, playmemories on my RX10 SUX bad!

hey whadda we know :-) ? We're just the humble fools who have to try and use this stuff in the real world. As with all tech products it's always a juggling act to get a working product to market in good time, and often the interface sucks and surprisingly never gets updated. Wrong approach in todays' free development market. Every man and his dog seems to be developing great apps for this and so anything brought out by the major players to supplement a physical product has to be top quality for clients to bother to use.

Jeez im rambling tonight. Shut me up already!

Your not rambling (morning here) we are people that cant understand why some things get done the way they do.
We should work in the Sony "common sence" division.

What?? They dont have one??

WELL THEY SHOULD!!

Lol. Im off to bed, 2am here! cam-dream time beckons.

If we're dipping back into our RX1 catalogs a bit, rather than just showing new stuff, here are a couple from Roanoke, VA, last September.

Ahhh...the Taubman. Been meaning to get over there myself with my RX1r.

Are you living in SW Virginia, Ray? I'm over in Radford...

No, I don't live there, - I'm up near Philly - but I've spent a lot of time in the area over the years. My brother lives in Roanoke and my folks lived there for the last 15-20 years of their lives. My brother has a cabin out in the Potts Valley near Waiteville, WV. I helped him build it one summer when I was a teenager about 40 years ago and we used to go over to your neighborhood around Blacksburg for entertainment from time to time.

Now that my folks are gone my brother seems to have more reason to come north than I have to go south (his daughter lives in Baltimore), so I don't get down there nearly as often as I used to, but it's an area I know pretty well. I don't think I'd been there since about 2006 or 2007 before I was down last September, so that was the first time I'd seen the Taubman - pretty cool structure from the Gehry school, although I guess it was done by the firm of one of his protoges rather than his?

It's a fun structure to try to shoot!

Thanks to Dave starting this thread, I am so much enjoying everyone's amazing images taken with a truly special camera.

Also thanks to DPReview for the notifications, it has allowed me to keep up with all the images as they come through.

Thanks again to all the contributors, very we'll done :-)

Some photos from this past week that perhaps illustrate the versatility of the RX1.

Thanks for the info, Ray. I moved to Blacksburg in '88 to study Architecture and remained here. I just recently moved outside of Radford.

Indeed the Taubman was designed by a Gehry acolyte, Randall Stout, who had worked 7 1/2 years at the Gehry firm. Needless to say, it caused quite a stir in the sleepy Roanoke Valley when the design was revealed. I think most folks have grown accustomed to it by now.

Getting back on topic with the thread here's a few of my RX1r images:
