... almost. I was doing some IR shooting this afternoon. There is a coal fueled electric power plant a few miles from here. A cloudless blue sky... white steam billowing from the cooling towers ( they look like nuclear power plant cooling towers ), some green leaves to frame it all.... I had about 1/2 of a 256 mb CF card full when a police officer drove up.

He: " Are you photographing the power plant, Miss? "
Me: " Why, yes I am ! smile "
He: " You can't do that. You know, in this day and age"
Me: " I can't???" incredulous
He: " No, Miss. May I see some ID?"

Needless to say the scene ends with me reformatting the CF card, then driving away...

Damn, the previews were awesome.

Melanie,

Don't shy away...

There is a way to recover lost images on a flash card, even after they were reformatted in the camera....!!!!!

I have a neat software to do it!!!!!!!!!

Just send me an e-mail with your current address and I'll instantly forward it to you in a ZIP file...I'll be on-line for another hour or so. Now, I can't go to sleep with your worry of this unfortunate case!!

Let's see the result!!!

Cheers, Feri

Dear Jail Bird, :-)

Recovery software will not erase and will not touch the card itself, it will only find and copy the files that are assumed lost (at least by that policeman) to your designated storage place, say like to your HDD.

I'll represent you, free of charge.

I don't buy the "this day and age" as an explanation for authority to require someone to reformat or to confiscate film. There's nothing you'd get from that kind of picture that isn't public domain already anyhow.

So i don't think it adds any security - but for some (mostly politicians) it gives the aura of security.

Not that i'm recommending being a wise ass or anything.

I took some pictures in a hotel lobby of hanging lights that one would assume invites admiration and picture taking -- security appeared after about 5 shots. I just said "one more and i'm done" and he said "ok".

Imagine what would have happend if you told him you were using an infared filter.

I'm getting really sick and tired of this anal retentive attitude in our post 911 America. Our civil liberties will dissapear if we do one thing: let them!

I'm NOT saying............."hey terrorists........here's pics of a nuclear generating station, located here" I AM saying any reasonably intelligent person should know the difference between artistic expressions and national security. I hardly think artsy-fartsy pics of a coal generated generating plant could possibly be a threat to national security! Nuff said.

Melanie,

After posting my last comment, I wish to say that i use the term "artsy-fartsy" as a generic term and did NOT mean to degrade any of your work.

I respect your work and consider you to have a fine eye. Your IR pics are some of the finest I have seen! Keep up the good work.

Don

Did the cop make you reformat the card, or did you just do it? Either way, you shouldn't have. If you were on a public way, you have every right to take those pictures and police have no right to make you give them up. It's just like seizing your film, which they also can't do.

He held my camera as I retireved my ID, the IR filter clearly says infrared. He did make a call in, and they did run my name through their data base.

I ran my CF through the recovery program Ferenc so very kindly sent to me. The files are not there, having been overwritten by photos I took later ( Nothing good, I'll blame it on being shook up .. LOL ).

Thanks for the offer Bart, hope I don't need to take you up on it, though!

hi melanie,

first your photographs are stunning! my compliments... i look at them and think of home.

i have always taken GREAT pride in being born and raised in the mountains of West Virginia.… i long to be home again- my family and have lived in sc and now nc for several years now... any how... given your statement, it concerns and saddens me that our state motto may no longer hold true..."Mountaineers are ALWAYS Free"...

i hope you will be successful in your future photographic ventures....and ...

if possible, carry a second memory card with you to use in case of another format or erase incident… if you do not continue to use the first card, you can usually unformat or recover the files from the first card when you get home… gotta love technology…sometimes anyway…

Oh, the West Virginia hills! How majestic and how grand,
With their summits bathed in glory, Like our Prince Immanuel's Land!
Is it any wonder then, That my heart with rapture thrills,
As I stand once more with loved ones On those West Virginia hills?

I had this printed in my camera bag but just now found the link. This was posted by someone else on this forum:

He had no legal authority to make you delete your images. You have every right to take them!

Maybe we have to practice saying, "One more and I'm done!" with pzazz and oomph and a big, jolly grin--especially when he checked out your ID and you were okay. When I was stopped in SF about a year ago, I scrolled through the images but didn't delete any. I kept on talking and showed him all the buttons and it was on the edge of my thoughts to take his picture, but good sense prevailed and I didn't. When I went to SF last month, I wondered whether cameras would be permitted in the demonstrations. They were all over the place. - Jean Ricket
