Am I the only one who wishes Nikon would produce a full frame slr camera?

I just read the Canon 1DS review of Phil's. I can not help but want it, but it is way out of my price range. I am new to digital slr photography and have only had my D100 for 3 months. However, since I have already spent a small fortune on Nikon glass and have read a little about the advantages and minor disadvatages a full frame sensor in a digital slr I believe I really would want a camera with a full frame sensor so I could use my lenses as they were designed. What am I supposed to do? Am I going to want to sell the lenses I have now to buy Nikon's new glass designed for the 1.5 cropping factor? Since I am new to digital slr photography and I have no real loyalty to any particular manufacturer, I almost feel that if Nikon does not produce a full frame somewhat affordable digital slr with similar flexebility to the Canon 1DS, I will have to seriouly consider dumping Nikon.

Even as a beginner, Canon's technological superiority seems to be becomming clearer and clearer all the time. I am not trying to rock the boat or or put Nikon down. This is just how I feel and I was wondering if I was the only one. I could be totally wrong.
Sincerely,
Ross

I'm happy with what I have.

I also think that there have been way too many troll postings here, and too many "I wish" messages.

It's not like anyone at Nikon that has the ability to make changes actually ever looked in this forum, or knows it exists for that matter. Incase anyone gets an idea, Petitions don't work either so you can toss that out the windows too.

My advice is if you want the hot new item out there, be prepared to pay for it, but don't expect it to be at the D100 price point anytime soon. Enjoy what you have or can afford.

From your last comment about Canon, maybe you should buy a Canon if it appeals to you that much.

I want 10MP or above resolution, the best optics and noiseless images. Enhanced AF, metering, flash control....many many. With all these at a good VALUE.

FF, APS or whatever sizing is meaningless to me.

Guess what? Even if Nikon come with a full frame digital SLR it is about the same price as the Canon 1Ds. So you can not buy it either, because it is out of your price range.

Other solution? Just stay at your D100 and maybe buy an affordable DX lens. Not satisfied? Sell your Nikon and go to Canon.

If Nikon produced a full frame camera today it would be in the same price range as the 1Ds. You are going to dump a $2000 camera to buy an $8000 one? Canon does not yet have a Full Frame camera in the D100 price range(the Kodak 14n will be full frame and it will use your Nikon lenses for $5000). I personally am pretty happy using the middle sweet spot of the lens. I did have to buy an 18-35mm lens to get the same FOV I had before with 35mm. Is that lens worthless on a full frame camera?

No one is going to force you to buy a DX lens. Nikon is just giving you an option that Canon D30/D60 users don't have. Seems like an advantage to me.

Yup, it indeed summarizes to this:
  • FF is going to be out of the initial posters price range for some time
  • dumping a D100 to go to a D60 gives no advantages, and has the disadvantage of NOT having the option to go ultrawide with an equivalent to the DX lens.
So what does one gain by dumping a D100 at this point? The DX announcement just made it a more interesting camera!

I will get a 10 mm/f2.8 DX lens for sure if it exists.

........... in fact I've started a financial evaluation of a switch, I think if I’m moving at all I’ll move soon while my Nikon gear is still in HIGH demand.

I am not at all satisfied with the technologies that Nikon are ALLOWING us to use and their penny-pinching habit of charging more and changing the accessories with every release.

On the pro level I am totally, totally, totally dissatisfied with the EN4 battery ~ I’ve called it a joke ~ Nikon charge us for hand assembled and hand tested and balanced NiMH battery packs yet stripped out units show then not to be balanced and hence the high proportion of faults, problems and simple poor performance. Other manufacturers and independent battery pack manufacturers can produce reliable long lasting produce with the same materials ~ frankly I am sick of it.

If it was not for the D100 I’d have thrown my D1x in the river several times by now.

So you are not alone, I’ve started the clock, Nikon have two months to show what they intend to do, before I commit to another brand.

Really...
Does the camera you own right now take good photo?

Are there tons of excellent Nikon lenses out there to help you grow as a photographer for the next ten years?

What do you take photos for? To impress people with your equipment or to make yourself happy?

Give me a break, John Shaw says (and I might add that he was a more awesome photographer ten years ago than we'll ever be) "the best lens to take a photo is the lens you have with you right then". Meaning, quit your crying and make it work, depend on your brain, not on your gear.

Mark

take pix.. stop worrying about the technology!!

anyway, the crop is handy as hell for me, cause it makes the 18-35 from an OK lens into a pretty fine one.. and means i didn't feel obliged to buy the 17-35. the crop makes the best of a lens, what with it using the central bit.

get over it, or get rich!!!!

you'd HAVE to buy AFS (or if you got the admittedly highly desirable 1Ds), L series lenses anyway... gawd, you'd have to be rolling in it mate!

oh and taking up weightlifting is a good idea.

me.. the only thing i truly miss is the 35mm viewfinder size. Had a look thru me mate's old SLR the other day, and i'd forgotten how good that is.

let's wait a couple of years, and THEN get all steamed up about it!

D100, 18-35 IF ED, 24-120 (will be sold...!)

but I'd make it 13.5 mp (for 300dpi 10 x 15" prints) an ISO range from 100 -1600+boost, 4 custom curve banks and every other feature on the D100 at the D100 price point.

To me that would be camera nirvana. 2 years ?

I'm going to wait until PMA in the hopes that these DX lenses are only for the prosumer market, however if Nikon makes it clear they aren't intending to move to a larger sensor on their professional line then Canon is where I'm looking.

The switch is too expensive for some temporary advantage that a new AF or metering system can bring - however going with a smaller sensor is something that puts them at an inherent disadvantage wrt image quality and locks them into it. Kodak may give a choice if they offer a high-speed FF camera with the Nikon mount (6nx anyone?), but if Nikon decides to move away from that on their own cameras I fear that their FF lens lineup will fall behind.

I would love to see some of the top quality work with an 14MP FF - sensor camera.

I got sick of it! 10MP, 14MP maybe 60MP. I am happy with my D1 ( 2.6MP APS - sized sensor ) and some Pros are happy with the D1 and D1H too. Even a 100MPixel camera won´t make your pictures better.

I´m more concerned about how slow Nikon catches up regarding lenses with Image stabilization. This IS a real advantage Canon shooters have in the field.

A decision for a camera system should be based on what lenses are available and not just based on a camera model. I wish you happy switching! The economy needs people who act not economical

I'm giving it two to three months and then I'm going to start seriously looking to get rid of my Nikon stuff....

Unless some kind of idea of what Nikon are coming up with is made available. But it's not just this. It wasn't long ago that Canon released the 1D and in a short space of time they release the 1Ds.

By the time Nikon announce their new offering (if there is a new offering) I wouldn't be surprised to see Canon announcing their 2D (or whatever their next evolution will be called).

So Nikon not only has to quickly come up with something that matches the 1Ds but I think they might need to offer something that surpasses it, otherwise they'll be forever lagging behind. In my opinion anyway. Ok, forever is a long time. :).

Oh resolution isn't my concern, I'd be happy with 6-8MP ;) What I am interested in is wider dynamic range and higher sensitivity. Since I'm primarilly a sports photojournalist I shoot in a lot of low light environments and if I could avoid using electronic flash it would give me a lot better image quality - not to mention the additional photographic opportunities it would allow.

I love my D1H, the only things that I don't like are all tied to the small imager chip.
A decision for a camera system should be based on what lenses are

That was true when a camera body was merely a box that let light in and had no real direct effect on image quality, however with digital cameras image quality is highly dependant on the camera. I wouldn't switch based on one camera model, as I wouldn't switch on any temporary technological lead. Given the same path, the various companies will leapfrog each other continually and any lead is only temporary. However, if Nikon commits to a path that will put it at a fundamental (and perminant) disadvantage to Canon, then that is enough for me to take the hit.

David hello
I just got a copy of Genuine Fractals and I use it to upres any of my photos
so they print on 13 X 19 with no issues at all
http://www.lizardtech.com/solutions/photo/
I was more than happy with the print from my HP, next I am going to send
a print out and get it on photo paper (ala walmart etc. etc.) and see
what that looks like. I am very amazed at the quality of the results.
