Where in the World Challenge 1

Now that was a lucky guess although something about the headress and facial design seemed to ring the right bell. Ok, I'll offer up another:
Walker Art Center Sculpture Garden, Minneapolis, MN?

I love google :)
I think it's actually the Sage & John Cowles Convervatory, which is adjacent to the sculpture garden.

Tho I do walk past it everyday going to work....
The big square building. I m pretty sure we are in the "Mitten State"

Detroit Station ? I don t walk past that going to work and I guess no one else does or it wouldn t be derelict. Looks great tho.
I wanted to go inside it, but it looked a bit unsafe.

I got it too...the statue makes it very easy to google it. W/o the statue I'd say definitely not CA as the road work signs here are not rectangular but diamond shaped.

Congrats on solving the puzzle! So what was the answer to the statue pic for the rest of us?
The statue is Our Lady of the Rockies and the location is Montana.

I used Google, and it didn't take me more than a couple of minutes thanks to an educated guess and a photo showing roughly the same perspective. The statue is the clue of course. This one was a good challenge, but without the statute it would have been really difficult!

have seen rectangle road sings by and on the 405 is LA, OC, and Ventura area for e.x.
I'm from N. CA but have been to LA many times...I guess I never paid attention to the signs down there...I just can't recall seeing a rectangular Road Work orange sign.

I have just looked at the wikipedia article concerning both Albany and the Plaza and it was very instructive. That was before reading you and my first thought was wow ! What did they do with the former inhabitants ?

My second thought was also wow ? Such a giant place for such a small city ! I have lived in a city housing between 125 000 and 132 000 inhabitants and here in Europe this is unimaginable .. You'd only see that in Paris (la Défense) or in Lyon (la Pardieu), or in German cities destroyed by the war.. Brasilia and Chandigarth were built in formerly desert zones and that Rockfeller governor drove the inhabitants out of the city into the suburbs. How look that plaza ? Is it empty most of the time or is there enough animation during the working days ? Are there shops and restaurants ? Or only government agencies ?

An interesting story, but probably sad for the former inhabitants.

Yes! Michigan Central Station, Detroit.
I knew I'd seen the second one before, but couldn't remember where. Now I do. > Fabulous series:

This was really an interesting link and thread, at least for someone like me, with a marked interest in urban history and architecture.

Best thread in months .. Much better than gear conjectures and gear bashing and than fight over the future cameras' shapes or whether they will have an integrated VF, or whether we will finally get the flat pancake zoom with constant aperture of 2.8 ....

Thanks to whom started the thread and to the participants.

Please this s an interesting thread, but try to keep it somewhat ordered
  • When you want to post a new picture, go to the first post and hit the reply key;
  • When you want to propose a solution, hit the reply button at the bottom of the post containing the picture;
  • You could even go so far as to write a new subject to you post, like new picture 1, 2, 3 etc. Or you could adopt a subject like crenated house, or sky scraper, or whatever is remarkable in the picture without giving it up.
This willl help avoid what we have now where the guesses for different pictures are all mixed up.

Keep the thread alive, send in more pictures !

Yeah, the industry that made them, betrayed them. The movie "Roger And Me" speaks eloquently of the betrayal.

What about Central Park New York ?

Yes, I'm now sure it is Central Park, I've been able to put a hand on the book of Bruce Davidson on Central Park and the bridge is there.. Incredible that you are in the middle of Manhattan.

That's a fairly common practice in the U.S. Another famous example is the construction of the World Trade Center. You can imagine how many businesses and people were displaced in an area as densely built up as Manhattan.

My grandmother had to sell her home to the government to make way for a post office. Eminent domain is a concept that's often contested in the U.S., occasionally with success.

Sounds like the wikipedia article on the Empire State Plaza could use a section on the impact on the folks.

From the people looking up at it (and photographing it) I'm guessing it is either a science or art museum. The people are pretty casually dressed - Saturday tourists and their dress screams Americans. Air and Space Museum DC?

Basically, they broke up the neighborhoods and people had to move elsewhere...I would suspect that most moved to the suburban areas around the city. Of course, the communities and connections that had been in place for generations were obliterated as a result....

Albany, NY, is the capital of the State of NY. As such, it is also the home of the support services that exist for the entire state (Departments of Education, Health, Taxation, etc.) The Empire State Plaze was supposed to provide a centralized home for most of these functions, and it actually does house the bulk of the state agencies. It is not residential. There are shops and restaurants in the concorse, and there is the NYS museum as well as a large performance auditorium associated with the complex. However, it is primarily work destination, rather than a recreation destination.
An interesting story, but probably sad for the former inhabitants.
Most assuredly, yes.

To these excellent suggestions, I'll add one more.

When possible, post a link to a similar photo and/or link to information about the subject when you identify it. If you want the guessing to continue, you certainly don't have to do this, but I know I enjoy learning more about the subjects.

Just to spread the locations around little more internationally {Is that a word ?}
It s out of focus but it s iconic.
The background that is.
