How is one to interpret Canon's deafening silence and frustrating inactivity with regard to 1D mark IV? Although there are several threads about its imminent release in Japan, no new samples (particularly high ISO) have appeared. No one so far has seen production version of the camera (including favored photographers).

Either they are, indeed, experiencing problems or this is the worst approach to a DSLR launch ever.

NEVR, EVER foget the AF problems with the 1D3 and keep ALL eyes open and pocket book shut until proven otherwise.

if american; it's all one big conspiracy, probably related to the government in some way, shape, or form

for everyone else; wait and see

BTW, for those that do not, and never will understand the british SoH, the above was irony with a liberal helping of sarcasm

The October 20 announcement said they are scheduled to be delivered to U.S. dealers in late December. As much as we would like to hear anything about the 1D Mark IV, there is no delay until there is a delay. Silence is not only cover for bad news, it is a cover for good news. I suspect Canon is making sure they get the very latest firmware into their bodies before shipping them. They know there are hordes of antagonists chomping at the bit to hone in on any perceived weakness and magnify that into a conclusion that the camera is totally worthless. The 1D Mark III "issue" was a relatively rare condition under rare situations only experienced by a tiny minority of 1D Mark III users. But, the detractors were successful at perpetrating the fraudulent charge that it couldn't focus. Who could blame Canon for being conservative this time around?

So many complained the 1D III was released too early.

Now, you're complaining the 1D IV is late.

No, it's not. It'll be available whenever it's available, not one second before.

Do you already own a camera? I suggest you use that in the meantime.

Canon is smart enough to know that if they were too vocal about the release of the 1DmkIV it could impact sales of current models, and the last thing on earth they want is too stop people from buying at the busiest time of the year.

I disagree. If that were the case they would have postponed the MkIV announcement until after the 1st of the new year. By simply announcing the new body they have stopped 90% of any MkIII sales cold in their tracks.

I mean, for anyone who may have been contemplating purchasing a MkIII why on earth would you not wait and buy the new model?

whilst it is not completely fair to compair the price of an hitherto unreleased camera with one at end-of-life

why on earth would you not wait and buy the [1D4]?

the price

in the UK, at the moment, a new 1D3 is ~ £2500, whereas a 1D4 is £4000
good copies of the 1D3 may be bought on eB@y for ~ £1500

that's a huge saving
not everyone can afford or justify the cost of a 1D4

C'mon, give the old mark3 conspiracy theory a rest, the camera was plagued by problems like no other, and it was supposed to be their flagship camera.

The lack of substantive reviews on the markIV may or may not signal a problem with it, I suspect it does not and they are playing a very cautious/conservative launch aka, "no news is good news".

Personally, it has made me push back any purchase until next summer when there should be an abundance of reports and reviews with which to make an informed purchase decision.

Good point and now since they even tried to match competition's highest ISO capability with small pixels, it would be wise to wait until we see side by side comparison with D3s (done by independent photographer, SAME Aperture/shutter setting of course), it could be a waste of money to buy into their latest marketing effort.

There are very few high end products that are not given a real release date by the manufacturer. We all try to make decisions and plan based on data. Canon should be honest and open about a real release date. All this approach does is to support the conspiracy theorists,

Its not a conspiracy its true... I read on the internet that canon ran into a problem with the us release of the mk4; The mind control contacts hidden in the command dial are experiencing a strange interference from jelly residue. This serious affected canon's master plan to control the us media via the news photog; we all know how much they love jelly cream donuts...

But the us government, still under control of the telemarketing division of halliburton, traded Canon correction routines in exchange for the missing micofilm in the Halliburton case... I'll let you know if I get any more info...

And for you doubters... this is not a rumor I have the facts...

The Best Answer yet! Crack me up! Not only is it really, really funny but it's also true.
