Italy and my D3 with 24-70mm (warning, img's)

You are on your honeymoon.... and you bring back memories of the trip, except they are not memories at all but photoshopped constructions of a reality that never existed. I don't mind a bit of PS here and there myself to give an image a bit of a boost.... but to replace the skys because you didn't like that they were grey just seems a step too far. Life is not always what you want it to be....that's life, we need to live with what we have....remember moments in time as they were....not shadow boosted and skyshopped beyond recognition.

Ok... had another look. I should also say that a lot of the shots looked great as well. I was really only talking about a couple of the obviously heavily worked images.

Sorry if I came across too negative...just a bit of a hobby horse of mine.

As I said, the shots are great...it is just the tampering with reality on a few of the images that I have a personal philosophical reaction to.

No offence intended at all.... apologies all round.

What a city!
Oh, your photos are good, too.

Thanks for posting,

In a way I agree with the notion that these images are a step away from reality - they are very nice images nonetheless...

Having been to Venice with a camera I can relate to the enthusiasm portrayed by the OP in the PP of his photos now that he has returned home... One finds oneself trying too hard to put our own emphasis on what is such an amazing city - trying to make the photos equate to the visual onslaught our senses take when we first visit such an odd, amazing and beautiful place...

I did much the same after my first trip there and then some months later found myself looking at what I did and realizing that - Venice has such a plethora or colors and shapes that photos taken there really need little in the way of "cooking" to make them beautiful...

In the end I reprocessed many of my first Venice series and completely toned them down - which looked much better and gave a much less "SUREAL" look to an already surreal scene...

From a personal standpoint, these images are processed too much for my tastes and start to border on getting "cartoony" in the rendition of colors and color transitions - the processing makes me feel further away from the scene that closer to "being there"...

Would love to see a few of these just processed normally - betcha they would be amazing..

LAST COMMENT....

Looking at these photos really makes me crave returning to Venice with a D3 and 17-35 or a 24 T&S.... That architecture is so amazing and I would love to spend a few days with a tripod and a couple of really nice wides taking shots that would have been technically impossible given the equipment I had with me he last go around...

Cheers...

Good capture and pp that takes it right to the edge. I dont mind pp that makes it pop, it may be a bit overcooked for some but it is not cartoonish and would look awesome in a big print, maybe even on metallic paper.
I hope your new wife got some attention too :)

NeilJones:

I have been to Venice, a couple of times; and, I enjoyed all of your images. Thanks, for taking the time to post and share your images and enthusiasm for such a beautiful city, :-)

The future of photography will be merely the artist's concept
of reality. I assure you of this.

I'm not speaking in terms of traditional photo journalism, but I
speak directly about all other forms of photography. From ama-
teurs & enthusiasts, all the way up the chain to the pros. And
as a pro, I assure you that over the past five years, not a single
presented image of mine has been right off my camera. I won't
have it. And not only that, I've become so good at manipulating
images on the computer, there's virtually no way most others
can tell otherwise.

It's a large, grueling, time consuming part of my job.

And to take my point even further, most everything we see
today in most magazines & on billboards and on the TV - is not
reality.

I refrained from writing anything earlier, above,
but I agree in full with Kakusai wrote above.

There's an extremely fine line in editing where
an image that is meant to appear realistic - no
longer appears real, and borders on fake. As if
a pretty woman who one day gobs-on far too
much makeup. She looks over-worked & comes
across as trying to hide something.

However, like most other things in life, I feel as
though we must go over the edge, to know
where that fine line really lies.

Keep in mind, everything you've done here,
I've done myself. I know where you're at.

For all the positive and negative comments!

It's what makes the world go around! We are all different, we all like different things and we all see beauty in different ways!

This is my style. Sure, I could do the same thing as the next person, but I want my images to be a little different. A little more "edgy" I guess. No big deal and I'm certainly not offended by anyone's comments here.

If you like them great! If not, no big deal.

Peace to all my fellow photographers!.

Best,
Neil

Hi there, i'm an Italian photographer:
very good work and suggestive Venice's hdr...

..just only a little disappoint of the very hard red sky, but very amazing shoots!

...I thought great - but I must say I have a hard time with the unatural look of HDR shots. I would prefer the ordinary processed ones - but besides that, they all look good in composure.

Hi,

The postprocessing is not in my taste. As some of the others stating it's the artificial look and there is big problem with the shadows. You have used the sliders/curves/anything else too much. But it looks that some people like it.

They look a little over processed to me. Specifically the skies look "over cooked".

I'm actually a fan of generous processing, but don't really care for it here so much.

Otherwise...very nice photos.
