While some of us were discussing which lens the rumored D700 is attached to, some suggested AF-S VR 24-120. The site author picked up our discussion and reported the story as his own, including the lens guess.

It turns out the lens in the rumored picture is AF-S VR 18-200 and the background lens is most likely Sigma 17-35.

Even rumor has copyright. :-)

I'm not sure about the sigma lens, that looks like a dedicated hood you'd find on a fisheye.

It seems to very likely be the 18-200 except the focus and zoom grips look a little different; plastic like the kind you'd find on a kit lens vs. the rubber of individual lenses.

That said, my concern is that there is no FX badge on the lower right corner of the camera. I wouldn't expect them to leave that off if it's indeed an FX camera. Oh and they probably wouldn't attach an 18-200 to it, either. Something's fisheye...

The fact that the FX badge is missing is unusual, unless they've moved it to a different location on the camera (although that seems unlikely). I wouldn't read too much into the choice of lens though... this is not exactly an official Nikon press-release photograph!

Yes, it definitely looks like the 18-200:

...or look at the 18-200

The lens mounted at the D700 has a difference compared to the 18-200 lens. Look at the back end of the front rubber ring, the 18-200's rubber ribs has no circular end.

I have compared the lens to all current Nikon lenses, and I can't find a match, so my guess is, that's a new FX kit lens like i.e. AF-S VR 24-105mm f4G.

Well, it could also be the 20mm/f1.8 Sigma wideangle which would make sense on a full format camera. I just got mine out and compared it to the photo and it looks pretty similar. And the 18-200 can be useed on FX as well, at least I use it with my D3 as a walkaround combo.

major Nikon event on july 7 ? :)

Still clearing the fog with a first cup of coffee but it dawned on me that if I were the marking manager for a new compact (smaller than the D3) full frame digital SLR, I'd have at least one "FX" badge on that thing.

That said, in looking at this latest "D700" shot do you notice how there appear to be two thin straps leading to the covers for the PC and remote port?

If you build it they will buy.

I think we're seeing the edge of the slot between the zoom grip and the part of the lens body with focal length labels, at an angle. Notice that it doesn't rise to the level of the grip ribs. This lens looks just like the 18-200 to me, but that doesn't mean the image is a fake - the camera is alleged to have a DX mode, after all.

Actually, the text is in Chinese, but the essence is correct--it claims the lens is a new 24-120mm.

In trying to judge the veracity of the image, can any one check the consistency of the noise? I would think that a photoshopped image would display very different noise characteristics in the altered areas.
The bablefish japanese translation of the text under the photo states

New edition book 24-120!

That would be consistant with Thom's 2008 predictions (almost)

Actually the exact conversation I had with him was like that:

Me: ”There are rumours of a new FF Nikon camera. Do you know anything about that?”

Him: ”Not sure there will be a FF, but I know they have a major Nikon PR event for some SLR products in a week or so. Would you like to get an invitation for you?”
Me: ”Yes.” (that was obvious :) )

So, I will wait and see.

Keep you informed.

Pretty sure it is the Sigma 12-24.
I have one of those, the only 12 mm lens (non fish eye) that can cover FF image area - and does so perfectly. The one lens I would test with a new D700 as the first lens (since it is my most used lens and the reason to buy a FF model).
