A lighting experiment for me with my daughter. I need more light and have problems getting it into her eyes to show their pretty hazel (brown and green) eye color-would help if she would hold still.
Post your workflow so I may learn.

Any suggestions for lighting and settings would also be welcome (5D, 24-70L, three spots on bg, 2x small softboxes (one camera left about 45 and one just to right and slightly above camera), reflector not used. All are hot lights-need strobes as it gets real hot quickly.

My attempt to retouch

She was a little red/pink from playing outside today-it looks like I should also reduce that.

Used both Contrast mask techniques (this case, Photo-Plugins Contrast mask filter) and S/H (yes I'm using CS2; lol). Used AAA fotofix filter too. Then, I used Byro's Moire removal technique (not perfect; didn't use the exact values as mentioned by Ro either, but these values depend on the image at hand anyway) to reduce the moire on the dress. A tad more noisy then I wanted it to be, but, again, I'm a little bushed this evening. :)

byRo's Moire Removal tips (it can to miracles that no LAB technique can):

Christine, what a little angel, and a great shot. Two versions. I think my workflow will be evident from the layers palette. Holler if you have questions.

lylejk this is ver nice, Thank you. And thanks for the workflow with link. This dress is so pretty but a nightmare to photograph for me. You brought out more of her eye color than I was able to do.
I will work on the noise more later as well.
Thanks again.

Wow! Love the eyelashes and eyes. The blush really adds to it as well. Thanks for posting the pallet/workflow. I will try to go over it and see what I can come up with after she goes to sleep tonight.
Many thanks.

Tilted the head slightly to give her a slight coy look. This is a great shot of a beautiful little girl. Thanks for sharing.

My fancy equipment does a great job of capturing reality. Fortunately, I can fix that with Photoshop.

Peano, your work on her eyes is spectacular. Very humbling to see what you can do to improve an image. Thanks for posting your layers palette, very informative.......Ralph

Yes, the hikey B&W looks nice. I will have to try that. Did you
use an action for this?
Thanks.

No special action or cookbook procedure. Each time I do one of these is a unique artistic endeavor with a lot of tweaking and trial-and-error till it looks like what I'm looking for. So, I can't offer much advice about special adjustments or filters because it is done only with curves and dodge and burn and the other basic stuff. Rather, the main thing for me is to have a clear vision of what highkey tonality will be most aesthetic. Of course, I've never actually had one come out quite the way I envision it, but I keep trying -- it's fun. And I really appreciate having such a quality image and beautiful model to work with. Thanks again.

wc=water color (also can refer to illustration when I say wc). I simply took my previous effort, ran ACE (a GIMP ( http://www.gimp.org ) filter; Adaptive Contrast Enhancement) and did some smudge/blends. Also enhanced it some using AAA Fotofix filter (another freebie since I'm cheap). :)

First of all, that is a gorgeous little girl! You must be very proud of her. The photo was really fun to work on. Thanks for posting.

Actually I thought the extraction was a little sloppy. I started out with the pen tool to extract her body and dress. Converted path to a selection and saved. Then extracted the hair using a copy of the blue channel and applying the dodge and burn technique of Russell Brown. Added that mask to the other. Then chose a background that was light around the hair and used multiply mode to let the hair show through from underneath. Applied the mask to the background layer and touched up some more by tweaking the mask around the hair.

I had trouble matching the background color with the dress so I just painted the dress one of the colors of the background. Probably broke some rules there...not sure it works.

I chose to remove one of the catch lights in the eyes but after looking at Peano's retouch, I wish I hadn't.

I used Selective Color on the skin tones to tweak the Reds by increasing red, yellow, and black.

I did a very little bit of lightening and darkening of the facial features with two curves layers and masking in changes.

I wasn't sure about the crop which is (8x10).

Thanks again,

Ronny
