Just curious - can you guys share your plans with me about the lens/camera/flash/accessories on you next-to-buy list? Over the past few months I have been able to set up a small Canon system including the D30 and a few lenses. I'm very happy with the current setup but afraid I'm missing something that is useful (yet affordable).

My wife is going to buy me a birthday present and she let me choose it within the predefined budget. I now have the following lens combo:

primes: 20/2.8, 50/1.4, 85/1.2, 100/2.8 macro, 135/2, 300/4 IS
zooms: 16-35/2.8, 28-70/2.8, 70-200/4,

I'm thinking of selling the 20/2.8 as I seldom use it after acquired the 16-35/2.8, and buy either the 35/1.4L or 24/1.4 L. What is your advice?

BTW, I shoot everything interesting to me.

Thanks

Louis

My setup:

D30, 340MB MD, 64MB CF card for backup, 2 batteries, Digital Wallet
primes: 50/1.4
zooms: 17-35L, 28-135IS, 100-400L
flash: 550EX
filters: UVs, various P-series GNDFs, CP, 81b, step up rings

Next lens on my list:

nothing planned. I've got my range covered and have no critical gap to shore up. I might get a prime macro lens at some point...

Misc accessories (in order of need/desire, not necessarily in purchase order):

new CRT monitor (19-21").
Hama double-bubble hot shoe level (my single-bubble level sucks)
third D30 battery
4 stop ND filter
small gold/silver reflector
1GB Microdrive or 512MB solid state CF card
Singh-ray reverse GNDF
color calibration device
I'm thinking of selling the 20/2.8 as I seldom use it after
acquired the 16-35/2.8, and buy either the 35/1.4L or 24/1.4 L.

My advice: don't buy another lens unless you have a specific purpose for it.
BTW, I shoot everything interesting to me.
Well, that wins the Vague Statement of the Day award!

OMG - that ain't no small system! You have most of the popular lenses in Canon's line-up. I would suggest that your wife get you the 1.4x and 2x extenders.

There are photo shops with less inventory that you have! Wow. My birthday is on 7/31 let your wife know she can send me a lens too! She must be an awesome gal.

I have a 16-35L, 50 1.8 II, 70-200 L f4.

My next lens well be a 24-105L if it comes out.

Then a long zoom and a 1.4x extender.

I will also pick up a 50mm macro along the way.

Thats it, I have a life beyond photography, nothing else, it's just a hobby, one of many!

Of cource I need a remote control, a Canon flash, a st-e2, a new tripod and an extra flash for fill in. Thats all!

Oh, A light set for still life and a film body. In fact I need a nice film body in really good shape like a EOS 5, EOS 630 or EOS3 but nothing else!--Jeff MorrisAdams, Gutmann, Steichen, Stigletz, Weston. they lead by example.

Boy, what a fun topic to respond to!

My "to buy" list for this year:

D60
extra battery pack
BG-ED3 battery grip
split image focusing screen (hope this is available)
2 1-gig IBM microdrives
3 550EX Speedlites
28-70mm f/2.8L
50mm f/1.4
70-200mm f/2.8L IS
16-35mm f/2.8L
lightweight tripod (my video equipment Bogen weights about 20 lbs.)
and a case big enough to carry all this equipment!

I have sold my D30 and have my fingers crossed that Canon will present the 1DS at PMA. If the 1DS is not reality it will be a D60. I am looking at the Digital Camera Battery and will most likely purchase one when I get my camera.

Hmm..

Perhaps a mini wireless studio with 3 550ex flashes mounted on stands pointed at umbrellas, with a STE-2 transmitter!

My next lens purchase, either a 16-35mm f2.8 L (which you already have) or the 70-200IS f2.8 to replace my current 70-200 f4... Alternatively the 100-400 IS seems like a great lens...

My next purchase is also a 16-35. I am considering trading my 70-200 f4 for a 28 IS or buying a 300/4 and 100 macro.

Hi Louis,

I continue to be amazed that with a D30 I can see the difference that primes make in my photos. Just yesterday I compared 13X19 enlargements of images shot with my beloved Canon 70-200 f4L zoom (That I have demonstrated is slightly sharper that the 2.8 IS version) at 85mm, with identical shots taken with a Canon 85 1.8, and the prime’s images were crisper… So it should come as no surprise that I’d recommend sticking with primes.

As to your specific question… The 35 1.4 would seem to fill the gap between the 20 and the 50 perfectly (think in terms of angle of coverage, not mm). You know how I fell about that lens! But if you were to sell the 20, then the 24 1.4 would seem to make more sense, but as I have never used one, I could not specifically vouch for that lens.

With new high-resolution bodies on the way, the need for zooms will diminish and super sharp primes will become the lenses of choice for discriminating photographers!

I know that you know what I’m talking about Louis. As for the rest of you, enjoy your zooms in good health.

lens/camera/flash/accessories on you next-to-buy list?
Sure. I currently own the following:

D30, BiG-ED, two batteries, 50/1.4, 28-135IS with hoods for both lenses, a 128M CF and a 1G MD, and a Nova 5 bag.

I have the following on my list:
Lenses, in order of preference:
70-200IS with extenders (deciding between Canon series or Kenko series)
500D and Kenko extension tube set
550EX and eventually a second flash (550EX or 420EX)
100/2.8 Macro
16-35L

and finally, something big. At least the 300/2.8, but by the time I will have gotten this far in my quest for a complete kit, at least a year will have passed. We'll see what cool DO glass comes around the bend.
I'm thinking of selling the 20/2.8 as I seldom use it after
acquired the 16-35/2.8, and buy either the 35/1.4L or 24/1.4 L.

Hmm... you're getting rid of a wide prime because you don't use it, and you want to replace it with a different, more expensive wide prime? Doesn't make sense to me. Stick with the 16-35L and pick something else to pine after.

Louis,

It seems like you have little need for even more equipment. How about she buy you an expedition or trip somewhere so that you can actually use it. For me, personally, I'd much rather get out and shoot than stay in and admire my gear. Don't know how much she was going to spend, but the cost of a good lens ($1K) would buy a nice photo expedition to the northwest. Or a whole day with a great model. Or three days in Disney World.

You've got the gear. Now go shoot!

My current setup:
D 30, BiG-ED, 28-70/2.8L, 500EX, Bob Krist camera bag, Apple Dual 500 G4.

Planned purchases:
  • 70-200/2.8L IS
  • Possibly a 85/1.2L
  • 2 550EX with stands and umrellas
  • ST-E2
  • A really sharp L wide angle, have not researched which one yet (any suggestions?).
  • Dreaming of a 300/2.8L IS...
  • Also planning to get an Apple Titanium Powerbook to use when we travel.
Puhh, A big list, better go to work now...

Sincerely

Anders Jelveus
"Yet another sucker for L lenses."

Hi Louis.

Are you looking for inspiration? I can understand if you're running out of obvious choices with that enormous lens collection... :-)

My list is:
16-35 lens
photo printer

long zoom (hoping the rumoured 200-400 DO will be affordable and sharp). Otherwise I'll probably get the 100-400.

other than that, I'm saving up for a new camera body. I don't think I'll buy one of the ones announced in february but I might get the next generation after that. I've followed that strategy with cellular phones and it works for me. Not too far behind and not too expensive...

Kind regards,
Hans

Well said. I just wish it would quit raining on days that I don't
have anything else to do! All cooped up in the house with my gear
all the time is frustrating. Hurry up, summer!
Ahh...the rain, pull out the old umbrella and find something that gets enhanced by the rain. Cloudy, rainy weather can provide some great diffuse light and wonderful reflections off of wet surfaces such as streets, leaves, flowers, etc. - just a suggestion. ;)

As for the more equipment topic...I agree, instead of more equipment, put yourself on a photo trip and make use of all that great equipment you already have.---Jon Trainer

Could such a state of mind be possible? Nahhhh... Not in this sport. Still, my wish list is pretty modest.
A hextone inkset and CIS.
A tripod mount for my 100 macro.
One more 420EX, and a couple of stands/brollys.
Something white and fat with a thin green stripe around it.
That's all. john
