Is the Fuji S5 an "upgraded" Nikon D200 with their new sensor? It has the good ergonomics of the Nikon D200 body coupled with Fuji's new sensor which is supposed to be good.

Would anyone buy the Fuji S5 over the Nikon D200?

Yes, it id the D200 body. Yes it has a lot of the features from the D20.
What's different is the sensor and supporting electronics.

We don't know the frames per second nor the buffer size yet.

And we dont know if it's basically Nikon firmware or if the menu system will be totally different.

What is the price? Not known. This as well as the unknown specifrications (some mentioned above) will make the difference as to what it is competing with.

seems that fuji has put out Nikon bodies with their super sensor. I imagine they will get some folks who are looking at the D200 to consider it, depending on price and other features.

If both cameras were available, I'd prabobly end up with s5, even if it's 50% more $. For now, I'll enjoy the d200 and wait for the s5.

Yes this has been what I've been dreaming of- Fuji sensor in a good Nikon body. Hope Fuji doesn't drop the ball by having slow start up or process time.

One concern though. In the press they kept mentioning "pro" and rumor has its initial price at $2500. This will prevent I from getting one, at least until it's below $2000. Which by my estimate will be like the end of 2008. Sigh... By that time, a Canon FF might be $1500.

if the following criteria were met:

1. > 3 FPS
2. Buffer was greater than 10 RAW
3. Cheaper than D200

I don't need the 10 megapixels of the d200; what I need is great image quality. I'm not blown away with the D200's image quality over 400 which I need to use a lot for weddings.

With P&S's coming out with 10mp's at $599.00 why would anyone settle for less? Another Fuji error. Hucking those left over sensors in a different body is a formula for disaster, for Fuji that is. Most current users are reluctant to upgrade unless something ground breaking is introduced so that'll leave new user purchases. If history is any indication, Fuji's inflated price scheme will have them running elsewhere. I suppose they figure nothing ventured, nothing lost.

Who cares? The S3 has slightly better resolution than a D70. (Not that there is anything wrong with that.) But unless they have REALLY improved the 6MP sensor, or software, or both, this is just a waste of time.

But the real thing that would keep me away from a Fuji is the HORRIBLE customer service in the US. God forbid you have a problem and need service.

Now if it sells for under $700, it might have a chance... ;) :) Bet they want $2500 for it!

On more than a few occasions I have not been able to get a shot due to wind and/or subject motion in overcast light. Not so long ago I found a nice spider, but the wind was too much. If I was able to shoot at ISO 1600 and get quality as per D200 at ISO 200, then I would be happy as a pig in mud. I suspect there are more than a few people with that point of view. However the question is what will Fuji charge, and how many compromises have they introduced. I suspect they will charge an arm and a leg and I cannot spare even one limb never mind two.

Now I only hope competitions from Canon, Pentax, Sony, and others push prices of D200 and S5 down fast. Then I'll get one or another. Otherwise, when affordable (~$2000) FF is on the horizon, I'll have a hard time buying any APS-C at $1500.
just wait then.. the s3 has been selling for mad prices ....!

Anyone is dreaming if they think $700 will get one of these. Every Fuji DSLR has been $2499 with rinky dink N80 or other cheap Nkon bodies, now they have a good body. And, don't forget there is a crowd out there that are happy with the Fuji sensors as is (both S2 and S3), they always wanted for a better body to put it in. Now it sounds as though they have enhanced the sensor, so enhanced sensor, good body= at least $2499, I bet ( just a guess don't take it to the bank).

Anyway, I'm holding off my D200 vs D80 decision, I'll be shooting the S2 and D70, as well as the D100 till this shakes out.

And a reported 6 months probably really means 8, 9 or 10 months before the average Joe can actually get his hands on one...if Fuji history on such things is any guideline
