Wanna be blown away?

I've been using Shutterfly, and have been satisfied, but I haven't compared it to Ofoto yet.

Has anyone compared prints ordered from these two services side-by-side? What are your observations?

I like the 16"x20" and 20"x30" sizes that Ofoto offers - Shutterfly doesn't offer those.

Mike
Those lucky ones out there.. use your Canon G2 or S40, upload
prints to a site called Ofoto (Ofoto.com), have them make prints
for you, and when you open the mail you will be blown out of your
socks when you see the quality of the prints! Absolutely as good
as regular film!! You can even make a poster size 2 X3 feet! And
it will be sharp as a razor! Try it!

I actually like the prints from Shutterfly better than Ofoto. I thought the colors were more vibrant. Shutterfly also did a good job with lower resolution 1mp files.

They actually use a digital enlarger and expose photographic paper
rather than doing a computer printout, so it is a traditional
photographic print.
...and will last 1,000,000,000 years with no fading or
orange shift. Problem is, I haven't figured out a
way to live that long yet... 8(
I mean, do they use photo-paper, which they "impress" with light
though some transparent LCD screen (i don't know if this is
possible!!), while a home printer "puts" ink on a glossy paper?
or do they simply use high quality (and cost) printers instead of a
darkroom-like processing?

Pardon my boldness, as I am too searching for the perfect internet site where I can upload my prized G2 files. That being said, and if we are talking about the same walmart where you can match clothes using Garanimal tags, then I can't for the life of me understand why someone would want to use walmart for uploading prints - unless they are candid prints. Someone kick me and set me straight if necessary!

has anyone tried uploading a file to wal-mart.com that is slightly
over 2 meg? like 2.1 or 2.2???? did they regect it or did the
upload tool regect it?
I tried uploading a 2.02 MB or 2.04 MB (can't remember which) file,
and it was rejected by walmart.com. So they evidentally take that
limit seriously.

Too bad, though. This arrangement (uploading my pictures and
picking them up at the store) works out great for me--just too bad
I have to modify my pictures first.

Shutterfly did better with my pictures as well. Most of the regular pics I had were about the same but ones with lots of vibrant colors like sunsets were much better with shuterfly

Amal,

There are lots of web sites to upload photos for viewing...but not all of them allow you (or someone else) to order hard copy prints, and some have fees associated with their use.

Look into Pbase, http://www.pbase.com ,for a fairly short learning curve photo storage/display site. It is "begware", at least for now. You can upload individual files, groups of files, or zip a bunch together and send the single zipped file. Once on the site you can manage various galleries and access galleries or individual photos with specific url links. This is often used by those in this forum as a way of pointing to photos.

Others are also available in addition to the kind of free sites like ofoto, imagestation, yahoo, msn, etc. There are pay sites like http://www.fototime.com , which allow more storage and keep full resolution images. Unfortunately, it seems like the financial model upon which many of these sites were based did not actually correspond with reality-thus many have folded.

NEVER LEAVE THE ONLY COPY OF A VALUED PHOTO ON A WEB SITE!!

Sorry for shouting, but lots of people have lost stuff when sites went bye-bye.

Take your time deciding and try out several to see what features you like best.

Good points, Larry!

Ofoto of course is owned by Kodak, therefore no chance of them going under.

I tried Shutterfly and had nothing but problems. It would not even install. I wrote to them about it and they told me the reason was that they don't recognize America On Line (my browser). Can you imagine that? Millions of users use AOL! I predict S-fly won't be around long.

My only problem with Ofoto is the price! It is almost double what I can find at other places..... I just got some 4X6's back from Costco's one-hour processing and they were great and only cost .20 a piece!!!!

Unfortunately, I'm not near a Costco anymore! Does anyone know a good place near the University of Hawaii at Manoa to develop digi pics or a service as good and cheaper than Ofoto?

For Canada,

Try Londondrugs.com.

Service has been great and so far the colours have been perfect.

I've used both fairly extensively. What someone else said about shutterfly colors being stronger is true. They seem to increase the saturation a bit. Ofoto's are a bit closer to the original. The last set of prints back from ofoto was not that good though.

Having read through previous threads about different experiences people have had with all these online developers, I decided to try photoaccess. It seemed to get the best marks. As I remember they have good prices too.

I think Fox Photo on Kuhio have email service and do digi-prints.

I actually just ran some test prints a week ago at both places, along with Dotphoto.com. I think shutterflys prints were sharper and more appealing - probably because they use the superior Fuji Frontier printing system. The contrast and colors were very close.

The one problem with measuring this though, is that every monitor is different, so you can't really know what your original digital "negative" is supposed to look like....it is always relative to some degree. I find that each place I tried had a slightly different variation - some lighter some darker some more pasty and some more vibrant. I liked Shutterflys the most.

Unfortunately neither Shutterfly nor Ofoto are very practical for large quantities of prints. I have 350+ prints I need to get made from G2 pics I took on vacation (was 1600, widdled it down). The only place I have found that offers bulk prices is DOTphoto.com - but I am not crazy about their prints so far. (although they do offer matte which is nice). I am waiting to get my test prints back from them to compare.

If anyone knows of any places online around .20 cents a print, do tell.

Photoaccess is super. I had this picture:

http://home.rochester.rr.com/morton/WHALES.JPG

blown up to 11"x14" & printed by them before I bought my Epson 1280. It is a picture of two Humpback Whales bubble feeding. I took it 40 miles out of Frenchman's Bay, off the coast of Maine with an Olympus 2000(2.1 megapixel).

I have it hanging in my living room & the print is absolutely stunning!!

I don't understand why anyone would put up with AOL. It's their fault for being uncompatible. They don't own the internet so why can't they follow standardized protocols like everyone else?

I dropped them when they had dial-up connection problems and they were still sending out millions of promotional disks.

I've had good results with Photoaccess.com as well. They are also one of the few places that will make matte prints, although I believe those take a few days extra.

They will also print non-standard sizes so you don't have to crop or have borders. In other words they'll print the 4:3 ratio produced by the G2 without borders. Of course getting frames for such beasts is another challenge.

Oh, and they can produce 35mm slides ($3.95). Haven't tried this (probably won't either) but you never know.

I've recently experimented with sending a set of twenty images for printing to both Shutterfly and Ofoto. Pictures were taken with Canon Pro90 of wide range of subject matter and lighting conditions. The edited files ranged from 1.5 to 2.6 Mb in size and I ordered only 4"x6" prints.

In my judgement, Ofoto was the hands down winner; their prints were well exposed for highlights and shadows while the Shutterfly prints tended to burn out the highlight detail. The color in Ofoto prints was generally less saturated but more realistic for my taste.

Last but not least, Ofoto took only four days to get the prints back to me versus seven days for Shutterfly.
