I've shot a lot of events in my life that had shocking turns of events. Irecently shot a Japanese "visual" band called Dir en grey. They came with a lot of hype and are very popular overseas. I was not prepared as the lead singer began to mutilate himself on stage. I was right underneath him when it began. Got the shots, but I underexposed the more graphic shots by about 2 1/2 stops as I was so fixated on what was happening. I was shooing jpeg... fortunately I was able to recover the images to a respectable level. Warning, these are graphic images: http://www.musicpix.net/index.php?module=PostWrap&page=Dir_en_grey

I am funny as all get-out. If you don't laugh at what I have to say it is you who have the problem -- not me.

Steve, I'm a real fan of your work. You seem to push your finger on the right time all the time... Great captures! Man, how do you you get those great DOF on 1600/3200 iso's on Musicpics like the 12/24 Henry Rollins. What lens and f stop dit you use if I may ask?
Thanks!

The all americans is CRAZY.. :(

Yesterday I see the same kind of posters in subway car - all over it.. the ad of new show... "Hustler", if I remember right ..

and that make me really sad: as a teacher and an artist I know how deep inside the soul all that madness can go ...
and I feel like wanna to ask them:
DON"T YOU HAVE ENOUGH BLOOD AND CRIME HERE?? :(

Ou
...crazy mf

That guy needs to seek some serious professional help - immediately.

Best part for me is that the name of the event is the "Family Values Tour"

Great pics of a pathetic doofus. I guess if you can'treally get recognition for your songwriting and singing ability you can always do stupid stunts onstage in the hopes that people will remember you. Worked for Alice Cooper and Ozzy

the guy needs help. I think most of you would hav figured it out anyway. Woudnt be surprised if this guy is involved in drugs and all, was probably under the influence of those, to do such acts on stage. I dont get it why, everybody has a life to make something of it, and they want to gain popularity by doing stuff that is just outrageous.

I have seen pictures of this band before and was wondering if it was real blood or prop blood? It is hard to believe there isn't some hazardous body fluid laws being violated here? I would be almost afraid to shoot that band. How clean is his blood?

I am surprised you shot jpeg? Was it because of the quantity of bands you were covering? Great shots regardless...

Thanks Venter. For that show all but the ultra tight shots were with a 24 1.4...he was right in my face. an 85 1.2 on the extreme tight shots. BTW, great great show. see him live if you can.

Well, the lead singer came out and began fully dressed. He then developed this look in his eye that was beyond belief. Maniacal. If he was acting, he's the best I've ever seen. He took off his shirt and began scrathing himself until it bled. His nails were very long. You could see scar tissue were he's done it before. I was pretty much in shock at this point. He then sang some, then dug in his mouth until blood started coming out. (The thought of it getting on me crossed my mind because I was right underneath him. Looking closely at all the pictures and seeing how it transpired, I'm pretty certain it was indeed real.

Forgot to answer the jpeg question. I shot jpeg because they were 1 of a 10 band line-up and I had to turn the photos around imediately. No time for RAW.

that is not my stuff. So what? its not my business either. what is it that people feel they have to give their opinion about everybody. You know how many people out there "need help"? Some of them are presindents and prime ministers or some great nations (I am not referring to any particular one. I think many of them would benefit from help). in that case their "needing help" leads, oftern, to a lot of bloodshed. these people are doing the type of stuff that always, at least in our era, was captive for some precentage of 14-17 years old kids. they make music, I bet not my cup of tea, but who knows. They hardly hurt anybody (unless they do, but then that something else). I totally cannot understand what is the moralizing tone in a photography forum. Did anybody ask you if you are taking your kids to a church/synagogue/mosk and performing some ridiculous and pointless (in some people's eyes) rituals? do you think it is anybody's business?

btw, I like the pictures.

and the Sex Pistols...

They were 'cutting up' on stage thirty years ago.

Nothing new under the sun, nothing new at all.
