D200 now, before Velvia 50.

... I cannot get good looking results from his Kodachrome action, it gives the pictures strong purple color cast.

Keep using Fuji and you would not have to use all these silly settings on a stupid computer....
Sorry just could not resist.

Sincere thanks to all above. Lets reflect.

Our mindset of what Velvia is and bring is different. Many actions, plug-ins, camera adjustments only cause certain saturations, simple shifts etc. That can be better done in LAB. Although not the Velvia color shifts that Thom describe.

I need to have my camera and workflow get me closer to what I like. Seems not all photos will require same treatment, but I want to get closer using one uniform treatment in order to minimize individual adjustments. I like landscapes/nature and for that Velvia 50 is magic pleasing (saturated, color shifted).

My workflow has a glitch: Bibble do not read sharpening, custom curve etc in NEFs. I should try Nikon Capture NX (unless Fuji S5 will be available very soon…). Does any other RAW converter handle this?

Thom’s “Velvia Action” and what was said “Thom has a custom curve for the D200 that is Velvia-like” sounds extremely interesting. Based on what Thom writes to describe, he is the only one who has written on basis of the shifts that Velvia film actually have. Where do we find them??? In what ebook(s)????? Thom, please? Or, better can you sell them to us separate? Would someone please post photos using Thom’s Velvia Action and his D200 Custom Curve, before and after they were applied? Is that a tone curve, are there any color adjustments etc to go with it?

Much thanks for more posts!!!

Any more solutions??

Kind regards, Anders

Here are two shots. Each are represented as they were right out of camera with Hogan's velvia curve, no adjustments of any kind.

Then each are represented with the curve tuned off and "normal" Tone Comp in Nikon Capture tuned on.

There is certainly some way of getting similar results from post processing, but I'm like you. I want to do as much in camera as possible and spend less time in front of the computer. I think this curve works for me most of the time.

Let me know what you think.

It give much more film like results than Nikon models, Wide-2 setting with RAW gives you over 2 stop advantage (actually HDR in single file) and very smooth gradations (with sRGB + 16-bit TIFF and Fuji RAW-converter HU 3.1-i). I do not know any other digital solution that would give such results (so near Velvia + Nikon Coolscan 4000 ED results, actually even better).
Although I can get good results with D200 also, I do miss the
colors and magic of Velvia 50.

Are there any other users of D200 who before used and loved Velvia
50??

I am interested in hearing what settings you have on your camera
and how you process your photos. I am not always happy with the
results from D200, primarily that it takes many steps in PS for
individual frames to get them. With slides it was in the slides and
scans did not require as much PS.

I use S-Reala custom curve, +1 sharpening, -0.3E and aRGB in
camera. Then Bibbles to translate NEF to TIF, CS2 LAB for color
boost and manual tone/contrast curve adjustments. Last, save TIF in
aRGB, convert to sRGB and save JPG.

Thanks for replies.

I hade a tough choice between S3 and D200, but D200 will be a better sell when the S5 comes. Lets not get into a discussion on them here, but I know the pros and cons. For now I want to improve with my D200.

Thom;s custom curve seem interesting. Is it a custom tone curve only and what color settings were used in camera? Is there any chance you can show a plot of it or its key values?

Thanks. Regards, Anders

Sorry don't think I can show a plot. At least I can't figure out how. ;^}

In camera settings:

ASA 100
WB 7100
Mode II aRGB
-3 Hue
Saturation: Moderate
Sharpening: Normal

Thanks, but maybe I'm dense or something. There is a mention of Velvia on the previous page, but only along the lines of "if you like velvia, try this" in the context of experimenting with your own curves. Then there is mention of the 2 curves that are provided, but it says nothing about these being "Velvia curves" specifically.

I'm looking for the Velvia curve Thom mentioned earlier in this thread.

-3 in Hue and 7100 WB. Interesting. Here http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1021&thread=20060300 speaks of +3 Hue Auto WB

for Fuji S3 color type with D200. Daylight is just over 5000 per D200 manual. Shade is 8000. A thought is to instead of 7100 WB compensate the difference. Thus similar colors also in varying lighting.

I find Thom's concepts extremely interesting. Where do we get them? In what e-book?? Is there an e-book that include both his custom curve and Velvia Action. I want both!

Thom, which ones, or how do we buy only your custom curve and Velvia Action please?
(or someone please email them!)

Regards
Anders

Well I always took this to be his Velvia curve. I could be wrong. I'd heard all his e-books had this "Velvia" type curve, so I figured this was it. If it's not and there's something else, I'd love to know. Nevertheless, I love the look of this one. Have you tried it?

That is totally, vitually and every other way... NOT POSSIBLE!

The point of the poke was... if the Velvia is liked so much why on earth would anybody want a poor substitute??? The stupid computer with silly settings had come from working on two hundred or so files that needed tweeking the last couple of days.

If you think it is strange fro me to post here... read Benjamin Hoff!

I agree completely.

2 pages of posts on how to make your DSLR behave like Velvia. Seems like a whole lotta trouble when you could just shoot a roll of…..drum roll please……Velvia and get the real deal. Now, anybody have an idea how to make ground beef taste like steak, or how to make water taste like wine? Look, I know digital is addictive, but sometimes ya just need to put away the 'ol crutch and shoot some film.

Film and digital are two different medias and I still shoot some Velvia 50 because I like the colors and magic it produces.

The point is I am aiming at tweaking my D200 to results with colors, contrast etc more to my liking.

Cliff, I already know he loves Velvia, me also. He also loves D200 colors, sorry but I do not. That why I seek info on how to improve them.

Go to Thom's website (bythom.com) and purchase his D200 eBook. The
actions come with the book (both on CDRom).

Dave
Dave or anyone,

Is Thom's custom curve and Velvia action available by other means. The ebooks require order of CD which takes time, add international shippage and customs (I am in Korea). Any other way to buy them? Sure would be convenient with immediate online delivery... even if higher price.

Has anyone compared Thom's custom curve to S-Reala?
