Well, I guess your real hope then is in the electronics becoming less power-hungry as people demand better battery life, which seems to be an overall trend in the electronics industry (at least in portable devices such as MP3 players, cell phones, etc). On the other end, battery technology is being pushed constantly (witness 2500+ mah AA batteries, which was unthinkable a decade ago), and which will hopefully get a nice nanotech boost.
I also agree it would be nice if flashes could use the same batteries the camera is using.
I think the unfortunately reality is that Pentax has decided to go with their own batteries (for necessity or profit we shall eventually see), and I don't see them going back any time soon, or at least no sooner than Canon, Nikon, or any of the other manufacturers.
