Upgrade 10D to 400D?

It´s better to buy an excellent L lens instead. Camera models comes and goes - but lenses (EF L) you can have for almost a lifetime.

That´s my advice - if you are not missing more features of the 400D with you 10D.
What do you guys think of moving from a 10D to a 400D? My 10D is
rather old now, and it's a few generations behind. The differences:

Both are 3fps
10D has better ergonomics
400D has a better AF
400D has faster CF write speed
400D has extra 4 megapixels
400D has the dust buster
400D can take ef-s lenses
400D has bigger LCD
400D has better ISO performance
400D has faster startup time
400D has picture styles

Seems to me that moving from the 20D/30D to a 400D can be a
downgrade in some ways. But for those still hanging on to the 10D,
there's almost no downside apart from the lack of a top LCD and 1
of the control wheels.

Anyone else still with a 10D looking to make this move?

I thought I'm one of those who has held off the gadget craze for quite a reasonable amount of time - the 300D, 20D, 350D and 30D all came out after I bought my 10D. Each time I was tempted, but held off the purchase for the exact reasons you mention.

Now my 10D is starting to show it's age (in terms of wear and tear). Also, the increase to 10 megapixels would give more cropping flexibility - there are times when my 100-400L just isn't long enough for my birding shots. Then there's the improvements of in noise at high ISOs, which would be useful for the shots in fashion shows and jazz clubs.

Please have a look at my photoblog at http://duane.shutterchance.com/ . I am not a golf club collector who can't play golf... or at least I hope so ;)
People spend all kinds of money on gadgets, but is it going to
improve your ability to bring home more keepers?

Photography is like golf. You can buy new clubs every year, but
are you getting any better?

Ok Im going to respond without reading all the other post because I'm sure this has been said more then once lol Get a 30D I came from a 10D to a 30D and I love it it is so much like my 10D yet it has all the great feature I have been waiting for since I gave up my ElanIIe and got a D30 Spot meter 5FPS capability larger buffer blazing fast write speeds I used to wait forever for the 10D to write to the card I have yet to max out the 30D and have to wait on it to write to the card Coming from a 10D I would think you would find the Drebels to be too plasticy too light to feel right in your hands Despite being 2MP less res. and no dust busterthe 30D is a far superior camera then the 400D

...since when spot meter became such an important feature. I had it
on Canon EOS 1V and 30D (sold) and used it very infrequently. 3
frames/s is not a deal breaker for me either (for some might be)

oops sorry lol....

Yeah the spot meter is so overrated thats why they put such good one's in the higher end pro camera's If you shoot in anything other then flat lighting conditions the spot meter is great much easier to get dead on metering wih the spot as opposed to a 9% partial if you do more dramatic lighting I have longed for the spot meter in an affordable DSLR body since I went all Digital and with the 30D I finaly got it thats why I bought a 30D and hung up my trusty 10D

I went from 10D to 30D. I loved my 10D but the 30D does everything I had wished my 10D did. It still feels like my old friend 10D but it sooo much nicer to use. YOu will regret going to a 400D for sure. I had a KM5D in between and I could never used to not having one control wheel for aperature and one for shutter. The other thing is the feel and ergonomics of the 30D. JUst great. Dont make the same mistake I made going from a mid priced semi pro body to a entry level body. I did it but wont do that again. Just my 02 cents.

Let me first say that I was a 3 years happy owner of a 10D and upgraded to a 30D and I am very happy of what I did, you are right in each point you brought up in your post, but for me the ergonomics of the xx series are really hard to beat IF you've reached the point where the camera is a 'second' nature.

Changing ISO, shutter speed, apertures takes much more time and can't be "automated" as part of your reflex since it would involved going into some menus or stuff.

If you can't afford a 30D I GUESS it would be wise to buy a 20D

just my $.2

My thoughts:

400D has a better AF - I'm not dissatisfied with my 10D

400D has faster CF write speed - never has been a problem

400D has extra 4 megapixels - I print 18x12s that look fine, not sure I "need" more

400D has the dust buster - 1 sensor cleaning in 2 year, driven more by conversation here than a real need

400D can take ef-s lenses - I've managed without them, although the critical mass is starting to build

400D has bigger LCD - nice, but I can judge the histograms fine on my tiny screen and even a 2.5" LCD gives no real info on the picture quality

400D has better ISO performance - true

400D has faster startup time - 2 seconds, once a day, hasn't been a problem

400D has picture styles - what's that? I shoot RAW

10D has better ergonomics - I don't think I could cope with the tiny size and no quick dial on the back.

Yes, the 400D has advantages, no doubt. But not enough that overcome the comfort, feel, and operation of my 10D. Once they put these benefits together in the larger/sturdier x0D form, with the rear quick dial, I may be tempted.

Or I'll keep shooting until my 10D breaks. I'm spending my money on books and trining courses right now - I think it's a better investment.

If I hadn't upgraded to the 30D from 10D yet, I still wouldn't consider the 400D over the 30D. The ergonomics are pretty important to me, along with the 5fp and heavier duty chassis and shutter. I haven't seen actual specs on the shutter, but the 30D is rated for 100k cycles - not sure the 400D is.

Judging from the comments, Canon better hurry up. I read here, from a bunch of guys that can obviously afford $1-2K for a body, that they're thinking of a 400D. I hope Canon's listening. :)

Me? I have this crazy idea to buy a new 30D or something in the next 0-6 months. Confused? Yes. Well, at least I've narrowed it down to the 17-40mm lens. :)

This Dust Cleaning stuff is way too new to jump in right away with a new camera

Wait a model and see if this new feature is really worth it and really works, or maybe it wil cause more problems than people suspect.

If it works, it will be improved most likely in the next model, or at least tweaked

The 400D has the improvements I was hoping would show up in the 30D, especially the dust buster. However, my 10D is in very good shape, does basically what I need, and a trade in would mean a big financial loss on a camera that is only 3 years old. Although I have a large collection of lenses, including several L models, left over from my film days, I found that the 10D often remains at home when we're traveling, and traveling provides the most photo ops. I purchased a Pro1 from a friend, and I have found that I can take about 90% of the shots with a kit that weights about 3lbs instead of 10lbs+. I find that I actually enjoy taking pics with the lightweight Pro1 and the d-slr kit has become a burden. Getting older doesn't help the situation. I am actually thinking about selling off most of my lenses except for a couple of key lenses that I'll use with the d-slr for sports, airshows, etc. For everything else, the Pro1 and now a Kodak P880 with a 24-140mm lens, and EFV will usually make my air travel kit. Note, the P880 is now available for $300...amazing considering the price for a decent but not great d-slr lens.

It may have been important in the PRE- raw and photoshop days but today the vast majority of the images can be fixed for proper exposure which is satisfactory for the ordinary shooter.

Well I dont know about most people but I prefer to do most of my photography thru the camera and not spend the extra time doing it on the computer I spend enough time post-processing as it is lol
