If you thought that the 5D rumor craze was a problem here, then have a look at what has been going on next door for more than 2 months now.

I often go there to escape the craze but Nikon has these folk at the edge of their seat.

Now watch what you say or they’ll be calling you a radical, liberal, fanatical, criminal. Won’t you sign up your name, we’d like to feel you’re αcceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable!

Who can blame them? What would we do if Canon was still selling the D60?

I really hope that Nikon will soon launch something a bit more competitive compared to Canon - so the Canon prices can be kept a bit lower.

I loved Nikon in the "old" 35-mm film days. Their lenses are superb too! It would be sad if Canon gets a whole monopoly in the DSLR world. We, consumers, would have to pay more for their products.

I dont even like Canon for petes sake, yet I switched since their is no hope of direction from Nikon. If Nikon told me, we will release a full frame camera in 2 years, or even 3 years, I would have just stuck with my film bodies and scanning.

However, since you have no idea whats happening, it makes spending money on expensive lenses unnerving.

If you are not positive and sing Nikon's praises then you are told to either buy Canon or buy a $5,000 D2X. It's funny watching that forum say they didn't want megapixels and then do an about face. Now they are doing the same thing over full frame. Nikon is a fine format but it has lost it's dominance and does not innovate. Also, that D2X high speed crop is a gimmick the ignorant fall for and think is a real feature.

If you had posted this over there then you would have been ripped to shreds. The sad truth is that a 20D can do the identical job of a D2X for 1/3 the price.

You think the Nikon forum is surreal??

Just wait for the leak of the replacement of the 20D.

I am not a hard core Nikonian nor a Cononite. However, I think your assertions are a bit far fetched. The D2X outperforms the 20D in the commonly used ISOs -- well upto ISO 400 anyway and at ISO 800 wuith a little noise reduction. As for acuity nikon has canon beat, just look at all the reviews.

And I do not believe that Nikon people were ever hailing we do not want anymore pixels. They were just saying a 1-2 MP difference is not a big difference and wouldn't show in most prints. That being said, I used to be a nikon owner until I lost all my gear last year, actually it was stolen. And now I am either looking at the Canon 5D (or 1dsII) or the nikon D2X. Currently, I must admit I am leaning towards canon unless nikon brings a high end D200 out by the time I get my money together to buy a new outfit that is basically a D2x without a vertical grip (a feature I was never fond of). But like most people say, it is unlikelya nd I will probably end up with a canon.

However, you are correct Caono is becoming the tool of choice whether by necessity or image quality, especially at thehigh end. And unless nikon shapes up pretty quickly and realize that 5 year product cycles are a thing of the past, they are going to loose the pro-market eventually despite how well they did with the D2X.

Yes

Your not wrong, I was banned from that forum, because I started a petition asking Nikon to improve its communication with customers and notify us whether they were ever coming out with a full frame solution, so we could make a decison, and not wait forever with our film cameras.

Theyre pretty touchy over there, which is understandable, as insecurity always makes people defensive. Anyways, long story short, I cancelled some expensive Nikkors I had on order and decided stop messing around and get a 5D.

Yeah, there is a large "anti-troll" brigade that will shout down anything remotely negative about Nikon. It's like a religion or something. Some users were complaining about the D2H metering problems and got hounded as trolls. Now even Nikon has admitted that there is a metering problem for the D2H (not all of them though).

But at the end of the day, both brands make great cameras but not perfect ones.

There is really nothing I can't do with a 20D that a D2X can do other than that gimmick high speed crop. The D2X does not offer a bigger viewfinder, does not offer a 1.3x or FF chip and it's build quality is not that better than a 20D. The 1 series Canon makes Nikon cameras feel like a compromising toy cameras.

Also it ships a month after announced. Nikon announces and ships 3-6 months later. It is obvious that Nikon has a huge market for a "d200" rumored camera. If they wait any longer then people will start to take a hard look at a 5D that is already in users hands.

I beg to differ.

I owned a 20D for about eight months for about 6K shots. It was a fine camera, but not in the same league as the D2X, which I now own.

That said, I was lucky enough to use a 5D for a few days and it is terribly tempting. The advantages being high ISO performance and smaller size. I find the FF thing to be a wash other than that.

I think the "other side" is never as bad as most people presume, nor "your side" so good. That's brands for you.

When Nikon got their new logo I started a thread in the Nikon Forum with the subject line "New Nikon" and finished in the body with "Logo That Is. Haaaaa Haaaaa!!!" They went absolutely wild!

But there is nothing the 20D can't capture that the D2X does. I am talking image quality and 5fps frame rate. As for tougness the D2X would win that but for less than $1500 a 20D is a great value. I could go shoot and get the same images of a sporting event with roughly the same size sensor and frame rate.

I didn't realize the D2X frame rate was only 5 fps; I had been thinking of picking one up with a Nikon Tele lens (maybe 500 mm) because I like all the D2X pixels shoved into the 1.5X sensor. Your comment potentially saved me from making a BIG mistake.

Truthfully what I would really like is a 1DII "like" camera but with an equal or greater amount of pixels shoved into a 1.6X sensor (for wildlife). I'm extremely happy with the performance of my 1DII but there are days (obviously shooting wildlife) when I use the 10D because of the 1.6X sensor and slightly higher lineal pixel density. All in all my 1DII has been a good camera for landscape photography (using a 17-40), so-so for wildlife (from a crop factor standpoint), and at the same time being super for wildlife (I love the 8.5 fps). I guess this is one of those times when the grass is actually greener on my side of the fence. ;-)

Again, thanks for your input.
