Gas Prices

This afternoon I tried to capture the rapid increase in gas prices that we are experiencing. Two stations almost next to eachother had 60 cents difference in their price.

It turned out not so easy to capture the two prices in a single shot. This one seems to be the best from the set that I shot:

EXIF info:
Lens : 70 210 4 5.6
Aperture : 11.0
ExposureTime : 1/100
ISOSetting : 200
FocalLength : 170.0mm
MeteringMode : Spot
WhiteBalance : AUTO
WhiteBalanceFineTune : 0
Contrast : Normal

I used the large focal length of 170 mm to end up with both signs readable. Unfortunately, there was a third gas station in-between (Shell) for which it was impossible to include the sign with prices in the picture, because of the way it was turned and the trees and other obstacles in the way. This was just about the only vantage point from which both the Exxon and the Citgo sign were visible.

Should I crop this, or is there other post processing you would recommend? Or should I leave it as it is, since it is kind of a documentary type of picture?

Thanks for any feedback,
Eric

I bet by the time you blinked, the other station's price had caught up!
Good concept for a picture.

Doh...someone had too start this topic!! Here in oil rich Alberta (produced and refined here) we are being bent over and takin it in the tail pipe at a whoppin $1.15 a litre ($5.23 gallon) Canadian!!!...thats $4.36 American gallon!! And they say because of....a storm....that contributes 10 to 12% to the US oil consumption ONLY! Uh hello...we are in Canada eh!!
.......wheeeeeewhhhh....sorry had to get that off my big ol' chest!!
Wish I still had my old 76 Honda civic...

This was taken in Maryland, Ellicott City (near Baltimore). On September 2, 2005 at 17:52 (5:52 pm) to be precise.

Prices are going up by the hour here. Literally, sometimes changing two or three times in the span of an hour. Last week it was about $2.50 per gallon. Now, $4 is in sight.

In the office today, I noticed that people are suddenly much more conscious about if and how far they drive. They're restricting what they'll do for the holiday weekend ("anything that doesn't include much driving"). My wife's co-workers are jealous of her Honda Civic Hybrid which she bought only three weeks ago (supposedly good for 51 miles to the gallon).

So yes, people are taking note. Even if prices will eventually go down, I think it will be a long time before Americans again think about SUVs and trucks they way they did last week.

Best,
Eric

I will admit to being anti-SUV somewhat, although I am for freedom of choice. But I've always thought the SUV craze was just that--crazy.

But I have no gripe with cellular phone users, and in fact I'll go so far as to say that those who have a particular gripe against them are guilty of discrimination analogous to racism. Yes, racism.

Why? Because--what's the difference between someone distracted from driving talking on a cellular phone vs someone putting makeup on, or fiddling with their stereo, or eating, or fumbling for Milk Duds or mints in the glove box, or disciplining their kids in the rear seat from the front, or running into a utility pole because they turned their head when they saw a good looking woman, on & on.

The tendency for us to target cellular phone users and not the other examples is, to be blunt, bigotry. In fact, I have a bumper sticker on my car that says "My Car, My Phone, My Business--NONE of your business."

(Then again, to use my logic, I guess I'm an SUV bigot.)

Right next door to you here in Saskatchewan - today $1.19 a litre. I saw on the news that it went as high as $1.39 a litre in some places of Canada. Pres. Bush said that they would not stand for price gouging due to the tragedy in the southern states. Maybe we should have him talk to Paul.

I liked the picture and the creativeness of it good job :) As for SUV's I like them, me and most of my friends own them and they keep us going in the snow and in the summer lets see your little car go down a backwoods unmaintained fire road (I carry a tow rope just for you :) )

As for cell phones unless your a doctor what can't wait until you can pull over or get home! Turn them off in the car I have had plenty of close calls with people not paying attention talking on them...

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming

--- WOW !! ---What A Ride!

as we're not producing any petrol, the price are very high here ! they went up 10 us$ cents last 2 days.
for 1 liter unleaded fuel we pay 1.448 US$ (exchange rate 1.228)

that means 5.48US$ for 1 gallon, can you imagine ?? and it's going up next week... MadMax era is to come ;)

this is off topic, sorry already :)

Life is too short, don't waste it.

most of the world has been paying around $7 a gallon for much of the last decade, and envying US prices. weve learned to live with it and look carefully at economy stats when deciding on a new car.
I wouldnt like to own a SUV dealership nowadays.

I used to have an Isuzu Trooper here in the UK, would cost around $100 to fill, but when I hired the same vehicle in Florida 3 years ago, it only cost $33 to fill. needless to say i didnt use my trooper as a day to day car here, only as a toy.

I also realise that a US gallon is slightly less than a UK gallon.

Jon

my thoughts and prayers are with you all, over the storm damage in the south

Sorry Herbs..

Actually let me correct both of us....

$1.15 a litre x (3.79 litres to a US gallon)=$4.35 Canadian x .845 exchange rate= $3.68 a US gallon/US funds

:)

ps Hows P.G.? Leaves turning yet? They are here....quickly!

although the EU doesn't produce much gas, that is not the main reason for the price difference (but a few cents). transporting oil to europe and distributing through the pipelines is rather cheap.

the price tag is political, to pay the road system, to protect the environnment and to increase rail traffic.
more than half of the price is tax.
the price for pure oil is very similar worldwide as are the recent changes.

Gas prices in northern Ontario Canada have jumped from a $1.25.9 to a $1.39 a liter in 3 days. To convert that into gallons it works out to about $6.87 per gallon. So quit your belly aching, if I lived closer to the US border I would be crossing it every day to get CHEAP gas.

I hear ya Doug, our diesel and "fuel" prices here are above $1.30au/litre. Its jumped 30 cents this year. Thats all well and good if you are a city dweller, but so many of us here drive very long (in a European sense anyway) distances every day just to get to work/ buy groceries etc etc. I love my wide open land, but man it costs a pretty penny to drive around in.
Cheers,
Tim

Perhaps one day all driveways will look like mine .... ;-)

The one on the left gets 75 mpg and the one on the right gets 55mpg.
