Firmware update woth it ?

So far here is what I have noticed:

LCD in shutter mode fixed. I didn't even notice this as a problem until Canon mentioned it. Always figured it was low lighting.

Manual Focus is alot faster - Could this have been an attempt to appease Bjorke?

Stuck pixels still exist. I was secretly hoping that they would introduce the noise reduction algorithm at all exposures - oh well.

I haven't had much time to test, but this is it so far. Nothing earth shattering.

Seems to be very little new in this firmware update. Is it even
worth the hassle and the risk of something going wrong ?

At the risk of associating a bunch of phantom fixes or improvements to the new firmware, I thought I noticed that the autofocusing/exposure lag is faster. Somebody said the manual focus was faster, which I found to be true also. But the lag time between pressing the shutter button halfway and hearing the beep declaring focus/expose confirmation (in P-mode for example) seems to be signficantly shorter in the little amount of testing that I've done. Anybody else confirm/deny this?

fascinating first time I updated... hmmm the ROMUPD.exe starts with MZ and contains a Borland 1994 C++ licence...hey this is DOS. So the camera processor is Intel, probably noted elsewhere but the first time I noticed.

With some preliminary testing of my firmware updated Pro90, the autofocusing does seem faster (at least in well lit situations). The adjusting of exposure settings seems more responsive too.

Many believed that with 1.0.0.0 it used to work fine, but fact is most G1's with 1.0.0.1 now only works properly with non-Canon flashes in Av and Tv modes. Did M mode get fixed? or did Av and Tv go bezerk as well? or no change? Can any one with a 1.0.0.2 G1 and a non-Canon flash check this out? Many thanks.

P.S. I strongly believe there are modifications Canon doesn't tell us about. In my opinion it doesn't make any sense to issue an update to the general public with a tiny fix to a non-issue "problem" that most users don't even notice.

I tried 5 or 6 shots after updating to the .2 update and noticed that the LCD screen does display better than previously - if you did not notice, try setting to Tv and pointing to a dark area and slightly depressing the shutter release - I saw this phenomena all the time, but just thought it was the way it worked. So much for thinking......

I too think it focuses and processes the shot faster in Auto and P mode, and in Tv mode, but don't see the difference as much in Av mode (from 2 tests, so may not mean anything). Much zippier. Never try manual focus though, so I cannot tell.

As to the value of the update, I am already happy! Faster and better screen display - given the cost of the update, I am not complaining. Others seem to be complaing though..........for me, it was worth it. But I'll sue if it ensures we never get another update because we're tied up in court. Come'on - my brother has gotten zippo updates for his Nikon.

I have an early production run based on the serial number and I am not having the issues many others report with the G1, especially the red / magenta issue reported in the forum. I've tried many test shots and cannot seem duplicate. At least 1,500 shots.

Michael,

Are you waiting to do this update, or do you not have the G1 anymore? Just curious why you aren't trying it yourself. Especially if you are not happy with the current firmware, you have nothing to lose at this point. Anyway, I also have a suspicion that the update will fix more than they listed, because even the first update seemed to fix other bugs. Of course, you say it created new ones also. This new bug may have been addressed, but they haven't said....you never know, though.

Me, I am waiting to see what the general concensus is before I do any updates. I still have the original firmware. I wish I could save the firmware prior to updating, so that I can always go back. But maybe that is asking too much.

I certainly hope that they continue to support the camera with firmware updates, so that eventually everyone will be happy. I, on the other hand have never owned a camera that took an external flash before the G1, so I don't have as high of expectations on my camera, and I can't relate to the problems you are having.

Oh, come on. Bitching is more fun. Why doesn't this upgrade enhance the optical zoom! I was really hoping for a 10x optical zoom and I don't see why Canon can't provide it in a firmware update! Let's all complain.

about three times faster, it shoots up and down the scale a
definate improvement.

Yes it does but is that an improvement? Before there appeared to be three different stages in each little section of the scale.

I upgraded using the microdrive, no problem.

I have a Pro90 with a 1GB microdrive and I gave away my stock 16MB
cf card to one of my friends. Can anyone see any reason not to do
the firmware upgrade from the microdrive?? I don't want to take
any chances of losing my camera for repair.
Any thoughts??

Karen Kenworthy has written a simple Windows timer program you can use to time AF & shutter lag: http://www.image-acquire.com/articles/timing.shtml

The program puts up a rectangular window which counts down seconds: 6-5-4-3-2-1-NOW-then counts up in 0.1-sec increments. Since it's up to you to release the shutter at "NOW", your own reaction time is factored in, giving a very real world measurement.

My times w/1.0.0.1 G1:
Tv, full-press at "NOW": 2.8
Tv, half-press to for AF/AE, full press at "NOW": 0.4
Tv, pre-focus w/MF, full-press at "NOW": 0.7
Tv, pre-focus w/MF, AE Lock, full-press at "NOW": 0.4
M, pre-focus w/MF: full-press at "NOW": 1.0
M, pre-focus w/MF: half-press, then full-press at "NOW": 0.2

I do. But I think I understand the mentality for Canon and other companies with the same cultural roots, at least as much as any Westerner-raised-on-white-bread boy can. The concept of face is something that can be difficult to fathom, and shows up more often than you might think in dealing with them.

We say, "Why can't those SOBs ever produce something that works properly? Any why can't they then fix it? And quickly at that? Are they so stupid as to think that we don't notice these problems and the incredible slowness employed to address them, even when we scream in their faces in front of everyone? All they do is ignore the serious bugs and faults (who's fault IS this anyway?) and give us little pieces and act like we should be THANKFUL to them!"

I installed the new firmware update, followed the instructions, I charged my battery before doing the update too..selected the firmware update and after 90 seconds I got the firmware updated to 1.00.2 version, I noticed that the shutter lag to be more shorter as compared before. I have never noticed really the problem this new firmware promises to fix, but I thank Canon for continously improving their products. I am a NIKON 35mm user and I bought a G1 coz I did not like the coolpix shortcomings. But this is a great camera. I hope my G1 serves me for a long time.

The firmware upgrade took about 7 min.from download to install. You never know what undocumented fixes this firmware took care of...
