I was just on their website and there is no mention of
any free battery.

There are no options for the camera either, - it's just the body
when you click "add to cart " hmm, what am I missing :-(

What you are missing is the dial on the telephone....thid deal is not advertised, it's a special deal you have to get a verbal on.

They don't openly advertise is probably due to the fact that they don't want to show Canon that they are selling it cheaper than others so they make the invoice for the full price and throw in something else of value to make up the difference. Works out great for both them and us. CameraCanada was offering, also by phone only and maybe because I mentioned the free battery, a 256MB CF card.

I got both the 20D and the 17-85 IS now, along with a Roots bag and some filters. I got the Roots bag for walking around because it doesn't look like a camera bag:

It's big enough to hold my 20D, a 70-200 f/4L, and the 17-85 IS, along with some other small things like batteries, etc.

Camera from Vistek. Bag from Henry's. I've seen it at Downtown Camera as well. I also got a Lowepro Computrekker AW for hauling everything around (incl. a laptop), but the thing is far too big and heavy for a walkaround bag.

I believe all 20D units (and esp. 17-85 IS lenses) at Vistek in Toronoto were spoken for by pre-orders. I didn't ask how many.

P.S. Mine is not a true "kit". It's a 20D body only box, with a separate 17-85 IS lens.

Picked it up at Eden, 20D + 17-85 IS + 50 f/1.8 II + BP-512

=$2938

Just called them, they have 20D with 17-85Kit available now. The
price is $2750 cnd, and the free battery only goes with the body
only, so there is no free battery with 17-85 kit. Should I pick it
up at my lunch hour? It's only 10 min drive from my office. I don't
have any lenses now.

If I look at the worst high contrast areas I can see some pink fringing. Most places it's OK though. It doesn't seem as bad as Steingrim's purple fringing though.

The lens is OK, but not as crisp as the 70-200 f/4L I have of course. That 70-200 is truly an awesome lens.

Below is a 100% crop from the 17-85 IS.



Note that this is not a good picture to assess this though. I was just taking a picture of a TV in the foreground (not in this crop) for some other reason. ISO400, and the window pane is somewhat out of focus. Notice the ISO400 noise.

I assume that there were no true 17-85 kits available at your dealer. I'm wondering if I may have to do same at my local dealer to get the lens, if for example there are no actual 17-85 kits in Canada yet...

am thinking to get this lens too, would like to see more shots of various types. I wouldn't expect it to perform as well as your 70-200, but the focal length range is appealing.
